An energy-landscape-based crossover temperature in glass-forming liquids

Glassy dynamics in a liquid of anisotropic molecules: Bifurcation of relaxation spectrum

In experimental and theoretical studies of glass transition phenomena, one often finds a sharp crossover in dynamical properties at a temperature Tcr. A bifurcation of a relaxation spectrum is also observed at a temperature TB≈Tcr; both lie significantly above the glass transition temperature. In order to better understand these phenomena, we introduce a new model of glass-forming liquids, a binary mixture of prolate and oblate ellipsoids. This model system exhibits sharp thermodynamic and dynamic anomalies, such as the specific heat jump during heating and a sharp variation in the thermal expansion coefficient around a temperature identified as the glass transition temperature, Tg. The same temperature is obtained from the fit of the calculated relaxation times to the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann (VFT) form. As the temperature is lowered, the calculated single peak rotational relaxation spectrum splits into two peaks at TB above the estimated Tg. Similar bifurcation is also observed in the distribution of short-to-intermediate time translational diffusion. Interrogation of the two peaks reveals a lower extent of dynamic heterogeneity in the population of the faster mode. We observe an unexpected appearance of a sharp peak in the product of rotational relaxation time τ2 and diffusion constant D at a temperature Tcr, close to TB, but above the glass transition temperature. Additionally, we coarse-grain the system into cubic boxes, each containing, on average, ∼62 particles, to study the average dynamical properties. Clear evidence of large-scale sudden changes in the diffusion coefficient and rotational correlation time signals first-order transitions between low and high-mobility domains.

Instantaneous normal modes of glass-forming liquids during the athermal relaxation process of the steepest descent algorithm

Understanding glass formation by quenching remains a challenge in soft condensed matter physics. Recent numerical studies on steepest descent dynamics, which is one of the simplest models of quenching, revealed that quenched liquids undergo slow relaxation with a power law towards mechanical equilibrium and that the late stage of this process is governed by local rearrangements of particles. These advances motivate the detailed study of instantaneous normal modes during the relaxation process because the glassy dynamics is considered to be governed by stationary points of the potential energy landscape. Here, we performed a normal mode analysis of configurations during the steepest descent dynamics and found that the dynamics is driven by almost flat directions of the potential energy landscape at long times. These directions correspond to localized modes and we characterized them in terms of their statistics and structure using methods developed in the study of local minima of the potential energy landscape.

Low-energy quasilocalized excitations in structural glasses

Glassy solids exhibit a wide variety of generic thermomechanical properties, ranging from universal anomalous specific heat at cryogenic temperatures to nonlinear plastic yielding and failure under external driving forces, which qualitatively differ from their crystalline counterparts. For a long time, it has been believed that many of these properties are intimately related to nonphononic, low-energy quasilocalized excitations (QLEs) in glasses. Indeed, recent computer simulations have conclusively revealed that the self-organization of glasses during vitrification upon cooling from a melt leads to the emergence of such QLEs. In this Perspective, we review developments over the past three decades toward understanding the emergence of QLEs in structural glasses and the degree of universality in their statistical and structural properties. We discuss the challenges and difficulties that hindered progress in achieving these goals and review the frameworks put forward to overcome them. We conclude with an outlook on future research directions and open questions.

Unified quantifier of mechanical disorder in solids

Mechanical disorder in solids, which is generated by a broad range of physical processes and controls various material properties, appears in a wide variety of forms. Defining unified and measurable dimensionless quantifiers, allowing quantitative comparison of mechanical disorder across widely different physical systems, is therefore an important goal. Two such coarse-grained dimensionless quantifiers (among others) appear in the literature: one is related to the spectral broadening of discrete phononic bands in finite-size systems (accessible through computer simulations) and the other is related to the spatial fluctuations of the shear modulus in macroscopically large systems. The latter has been recently shown to determine the amplitude of wave attenuation rates in the low-frequency limit (accessible through laboratory experiments). Here, using two alternative and complementary theoretical approaches linked to the vibrational spectra of solids, we derive a basic scaling relation between the two dimensionless quantifiers. This scaling relation, which is supported by simulational data, shows that the two apparently distinct quantifiers are in fact intrinsically related, giving rise to a unified quantifier of mechanical disorder in solids. We further discuss the obtained results in the context of the unjamming transition taking place in soft sphere packings at low confining pressures, in addition to their implications for our understanding of the low-frequency vibrational spectra of disordered solids in general, and in particular those of glassy systems.
