Effects of interaction strength of associating groups on linear and star polymer dynamics

Bead-Spring Simulation of Ionomer Melts-Studying the Effects of Chain-Length and Associating Group Fraction on Equilibrium Structure and Extensional Flow Behavior

Ionomers are associative polymers with diverse applications ranging from selective membranes and high-performance adhesives to abrasion- and chemical-resistant coatings, insulation layers, vacuum packaging, and foamed sheets. Within equilibrium melt, the ionic or associating groups are known to form thermally reversible, associative clusters whose presence can significantly affect the system's mechanical, viscoelastic, and transport properties. It is, thus, of great interest to understand how to control such clusters' size distribution, shape, and stability through the designed choice of polymer architecture and the ionic groups' fraction, arrangement, and interaction strength. In this work, we represent linear associating polymers using a Kremer-Grest type bead-spring model and perform large-scale MD simulations to explore the effect of polymer chain-length (l) and fraction (fs) of randomly placed associating groups on the size distribution and stability of formed clusters. We consider different chain-lengths (below and above entanglement), varying fractions of associating groups (represented by 'sticky' beads) between 5 and 20%, and a fixed sticky-sticky nonbond interaction strength of four times that between regular non-associating beads. For all melts containing associating groups the equilibrium structure factor S(q) displays a signature ionomer peak at low wave vector q whose intensity increases with increasing fs and l. The average cluster size Nc increases with fs. However, the effect of chain-length on Nc appears to be pronounced only at higher values of fs. Under extensional flows, the computed stress (and viscosity) is higher at higher fs and l regardless of strain rate. Beyond a critical strain rate, we observe fragmentation of the associative clusters, which has interesting effects on the stress/viscous response.

Entropic Mixing of Ring/Linear Polymer Blends

The topological constraints of nonconcatenated ring polymers force them to form compact loopy globular conformations with much lower entropy than unconstrained ideal rings. The closed-loop structure of ring polymers also enables them to be threaded by linear polymers in ring/linear blends, resulting in less compact ring conformations with higher entropy. This conformational entropy increase promotes mixing rings with linear polymers. Here, using molecular dynamics simulations for bead-spring chains, ring/linear blends are shown to be significantly more miscible than linear/linear blends and that there is an entropic mixing, negative χ, for ring/linear blends compared to linear/linear and ring/ring blends. In analogy with small angle neutron scattering, the static structure function S(q) is measured, and the resulting data are fit to the random phase approximation model to determine χ. In the limit that the two components are the same, χ = 0 for the linear/linear and ring/ring blends as expected, while χ < 0 for the ring/linear blends. With increasing chain stiffness, χ for the ring/linear blends becomes more negative, varying reciprocally with the number of monomers between entanglements. Ring/linear blends are also shown to be more miscible than either ring/ring or linear/linear blends and stay in single phase for a wider range of increasing repulsion between the two components.

Phase Behaviors of ABA Star Polymer and Nanoparticles Confined in a Sphere with Soft Inner Surface

The phase behaviors of an ABA star polymer and nanoparticles confined in a sphere with soft inner surface, which is grafted with homopolymer brushes have been studied by the self-consistent field theory (SCFT). The morphologies of mixture in the center slice of sphere were focused. Two cases are considered: one is that the nanoparticles interact with the B blocks and the other is that the nanoparticles preferentially wet the B blocks. Under the two conditions, through changing the block ratio of the ABA star polymer, the concentration and radius of the nanoparticles, the phase behaviors of the mixtures confined the soft sphere are studied systematically. With increasing the concentration of nanoparticles, the entropy and the steric repulsive interaction of nanoparticles, and the nanoparticle density distributions along the perpendicular line through the center of sphere are plotted. The phase diagram is also constructed to analyze the effects of the nanoparticle volume fraction and radius on morphologies of ABA star polymers, and to study the effect of confinement on the phase behaviors. The results in this work provide a useful reference for controlling the ordered structures in experiment, which is an effective way to fabricate the newly multifunctional materials.
