Effect of counterions on the structure and dynamics of water near a negatively charged surfactant: a theoretical vibrational sum frequency generation study

Charged aqueous interfaces are of paramount importance in electrochemical, biological and environmental sciences. The properties of aqueous interfaces with ionic surfactants can be influenced by the presence of counterions. Earlier experiments involving vibrational sum frequency generation (VSFG) spectroscopy of aqueous interfaces with negatively charged sodium dodecyl sulfate (Na+DS- or SDS) surfactants revealed that the hydrogen bonding strength of the interfacial water molecules follows a certain order when salts of monovalent and divalent cations are added. It is known that cations do not directly participate in hydrogen bonding with water molecules, rather they only influence the hydrogen bonded network through their electrostatic fields. In the current work, we have simulated the aqueous interfacial systems of sodium dodecyl sulfate in the presence of chloride salts of mono and divalent countercations. The electronic polarization effects on the ions are considered at a mean-field level within the electronic continuum correction model. Our calculations of the VSFG spectra show a blue shift in the presence of added countercations whose origin is traced to different relative contributions of water molecules from the solvation shells of the surfactant headgroups and the remaining water molecules in the presence of countercations. Furthermore, the cations shield the electric fields of the surfactant headgroups, which in turn influences the contributions of water molecules to the total VSFG spectrum. This shielding effect becomes more significant when divalent countercations are present. The dynamics of water molecules is found to be slower at the interface in comparison to the bulk. The interfacial depth dependence of various dynamical quantities shows that the interface is structurally and dynamically more heterogeneous at the microscopic level.

Nanoscale Elasto-Capillarity in the Graphene-Water System under Tension: Revisiting the Assumption of a Constant Wetting Angle

Wetting highly compliant surfaces can cause them to deform. Atomically thin materials, such as graphene, can have exceptionally small bending rigidities, leading to elasto-capillary lengths of a few nanometers. Using large-scale molecular dynamics (MD), we have studied the wetting and deformation of graphene due to nanometer-sized water droplets, focusing on the wetting angle near the vesicle transition. Recent continuum theories for wetting of flexible membranes reproduce our MD results qualitatively well. However, we find that when the curvature is large at the triple-phase contact line, the wetting angle increases with decreasing tension. This is in contrast to existing macroscopic theories but can be amended by allowing for a variable wetting angle.

Water adsorption and dynamics on graphene and other 2D materials: Computational and experimental advances

The interaction of water and surfaces, at molecular level, is of critical importance for understanding processes such as corrosion, friction, catalysis and mass transport. The significant literature on interactions with single crystal metal surfaces should not obscure unknowns in the unique behaviour of ice and the complex relationships between adsorption, diffusion and long-range inter-molecular interactions. Even less is known about the atomic-scale behaviour of water on novel, non-metallic interfaces, in particular on graphene and other 2D materials. In this manuscript, we review recent progress in the characterisation of water adsorption on 2D materials, with a focus on the nano-material graphene and graphitic nanostructures; materials which are of paramount importance for separation technologies, electrochemistry and catalysis, to name a few. The adsorption of water on graphene has also become one of the benchmark systems for modern computational methods, in particular dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT). We then review recent experimental and theoretical advances in studying the single-molecular motion of water at surfaces, with a special emphasis on scattering approaches as they allow an unparalleled window of observation to water surface motion, including diffusion, vibration and self-assembly.

Correlation lengths in nanoconfined water and transport properties

We report the existence of disparate static and dynamic correlation lengths that could describe the influence of confinement on nanoconfined water (NCW). Various aspects of viscous properties, such as anisotropy and viscoelasticity, of NCW are studied by varying the separation distance "d" between two confining hydrophobic plates. The transverse component of the mean square stress exhibits slow spatial decay (measured from the surface) beyond ∼1.8 nm, which was not reported before. The static correlation length obtained from fitting the exponential decay of the transverse mean-square stress with d is 0.75 nm, while the decay time of the stress-stress time correlation function gives a dynamic correlation length of only 0.35 nm. The shortness of the dynamic correlation length seems to arise from the low sensitivity of orientational relaxation to confinement. In the frequency-dependent viscosity, we observe a new peak at about 50 cm^-1 that is not present in the bulk. This new peak is prominent even at 3 nm separations. The peak is absent in the bulk, although it is close to the intermolecular -O-O-O- bending mode well known in liquid water.
