Influence of an atomistic protrusion at the tip apex on enhancing molecular emission in tunnel junctions: A theoretical study

Nanoscale chemical characterization of materials and interfaces by tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

Materials and their interfaces are the core for the development of a large variety of fields, including catalysis, energy storage and conversion. In this case, tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS), which combines scanning probe microscopy with plasmon-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, is a powerful technique that can simultaneously obtain the morphological information and chemical fingerprint of target samples at nanometer spatial resolution. It is an ideal tool for the nanoscale chemical characterization of materials and interfaces, correlating their structures with chemical performances. In this review, we begin with a brief introduction to the nanoscale characterization of materials and interfaces, followed by a detailed discussion on the recent theoretical understanding and technical improvements of TERS, including the origin of enhancement, TERS instruments, TERS tips and the application of algorithms in TERS. Subsequently, we list the key experimental issues that need to be addressed to conduct successful TERS measurements. Next, we focus on the recent progress of TERS in the study of various materials, especially the novel low-dimensional materials, and the progresses of TERS in studying different interfaces, including both solid-gas and solid-liquid interfaces. Finally, we provide an outlook on the future developments of TERS in the study of materials and interfaces.

Anomalously bright single-molecule upconversion electroluminescence

Efficient upconversion electroluminescence is highly desirable for a broad range of optoelectronic applications, yet to date, it has been reported only for ensemble systems, while the upconversion electroluminescence efficiency remains very low for single-molecule emitters. Here we report on the observation of anomalously bright single-molecule upconversion electroluminescence, with emission efficiencies improved by more than one order of magnitude over previous studies, and even stronger than normal-bias electroluminescence. Intuitively, the improvement is achieved via engineering the energy-level alignments at the molecule-substrate interface so as to activate an efficient spin-triplet mediated upconversion electroluminescence mechanism that only involves pure carrier injection steps. We further validate the intuitive picture with the construction of delicate electroluminescence diagrams for the excitation of single-molecule electroluminescence, allowing to readily identify the prerequisite conditions for producing efficient upconversion electroluminescence. These findings provide deep insights into the microscopic mechanism of single-molecule upconversion electroluminescence and organic electroluminescence in general.

Quantum plasmonic two-dimensional WS2-MoS2 heterojunction

Two-dimensional heterostructures have recently gained broad interest due to potential applications in optoelectronic devices. Their reduced dimensionality leads to novel physical effects beyond conventional bulk electronics. However, the optical properties of the 2D lateral heterojunctions have not been completely characterized due to the limited spatial resolution, requiring nano-optical techniques beyond the diffraction limit. Here, we investigate lateral monolayer WS₂-MoS₂ heterostructures in a plasmonic Au-Au tip-substrate picocavity using subdiffraction limited tip-enhanced photoluminescence (TEPL) spectroscopy with sub-nanometer tip-sample distance control. We observed more than 3 orders of magnitude PL enhancement by placing a plasmonic Au-coated tip at the resonantly excited heterojunction. We developed a theoretical model of the quantum plasmonic 2D heterojunction, where tunneling of hot electrons between the Au tip and MoS₂ leads to the quenching of the MoS₂ PL, while simultaneously increasing the WS₂ PL, in contrast to the non-resonant reverse transfer. Our simulations show good agreement with the experiments, revealing a range of parameters and enhancement factors corresponding to the switching between the classical and quantum regimes. The controllable photoresponse of the 2D heterojunction can be used in novel nanodevices.

Toward a New Era of SERS and TERS at the Nanometer Scale: From Fundamentals to Innovative Applications

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS) have opened a variety of exciting research fields. However, although a vast number of applications have been proposed since the two techniques were first reported, none has been applied to real practical use. This calls for an update in the recent fundamental and application studies of SERS and TERS. Thus, the goals and scope of this review are to report new directions and perspectives of SERS and TERS, mainly from the viewpoint of combining their mechanism and application studies. Regarding the recent progress in SERS and TERS, this review discusses four main topics: (1) nanometer to subnanometer plasmonic hotspots for SERS; (2) Ångström resolved TERS; (3) chemical mechanisms, i.e., charge-transfer mechanism of SERS and semiconductor-enhanced Raman scattering; and (4) the creation of a strong bridge between the mechanism studies and applications.

Fast fabrication and judgement of tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy-active tips

The quality of the scanning tip is crucial for tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) experiments towards large signal enhancement and high spatial resolution. In this work, we report a controllable fabrication method to prepare TERS-active tips by modifying the tip apex at the atomic scale, and propose two important criteria to in-situ judge the tip's TERS activity for tip-enhanced Raman measurements. One criterion is based on the downshift of the first image potential state to monitor the coupling between the far-field incident laser and near-field plasmon; the other is based on the appearance of the low-wavenumber Raman peaks associated with an atomistic protrusion at the tip apex to judge the coupling efficiency of emissions from the near field to the far field. This work provides an effective method to quickly fabricate and judge TERS-active tips before real TERS experiments on target molecules and other materials, which is believed to be instrumental for the development of TERS and other tip-enhanced spectroscopic techniques.
