Oxygen NMR of high-density and low-density amorphous ice

Interplay of ethaline and water dynamics in a hydrated eutectic solvent: Deuteron and oxygen magnetic resonance studies of aqueous ethaline

For many technological processes, the impact of water addition on the properties of deep eutectic solvents is of central importance. In this context, the impact of hydration on the reorientational dynamics of the deep eutectic solvent (DES) ethaline, a 2:1 molar mixture of ethylene glycol and choline chloride, was studied. Its overall response was explored by means of shear mechanical rheology. To achieve component-selective insights into the dynamics of this material, isotope-edited deuteron and oxygen spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxometry, as well as stimulated-echo spectroscopy, were applied and yielded motional correlation times from above room temperature down to the highly viscous regime. For all temperatures, the cholinium anion was found to reorient about two times slower than ethylene glycol, while the water and the ethylene glycol molecules display very similar mobilities. While hydration enhances the component dynamics with respect to that of dry ethaline, the present findings reveal that it does not detectably increase the heterogeneity of the solvent. Merely, the time scale similarity that is found for the hydrogen bond donor and the water molecules over a particularly wide temperature range impressively attests to the stability of the native solvent structure in the "water-in-DES" regime.

Infrared Spectroscopy on Equilibrated High-Density Amorphous Ice

High-density (HDA) and low-density amorphous ices (LDA) are believed to be counterparts of the high- and low-density liquid phases of water, respectively. In order to better understand how the vibrational modes change during the transition between the two solid states, we present infrared spectroscopy measurements, following the change of the decoupled OD-stretch (vOD) (∼2460 cm-1) and OH-combinational mode (vOH + v2, vOH + 2vR) (∼5000 cm-1). We observe a redshift from HDA to LDA, accompanied with a drastic decrease of the bandwidth. The hydrogen bonds are stronger in LDA, which is caused by a change in the coordination number and number of water molecules interstitial between the first and second hydration shell. The unusually broad uncoupled OD band also clearly distinguishes HDA from other crystalline high-pressure phases, while the shape and position of the in situ prepared LDA are comparable to those of vapor-deposited amorphous ice.

Isotope effects on the dynamics of amorphous ices and aqueous phosphoric acid solutions

The glass transitions of amorphous ices as well as of aqueous phosphoric acid solutions were reported to display very large ¹H/²H isotope effects. Using dielectric spectroscopy, in both types of glassformers for equimolar protonated/deuterated mixtures an almost ideal isotope-mixing behavior rather than a bimodal relaxation is found. For the amorphous ices this finding is interpreted in terms of a glass-to-liquid rather than an orientational glass transition scenario. Based on calorimetric results revealing that major ¹⁶O/¹⁸O isotope effects are missing, the latter scenario was previously favored for the amorphous ices. Considering the dielectric results on ¹⁸O substituted amorphous ices and by comparison with corresponding results for the aqueous phosphoric acid solutions, it is argued that the present findings are compatible with the glass-to-liquid scenario. To provide additional information regarding the deeply supercooled state of ¹H/²H isotopically mixed and ¹⁸O substituted glassformers, the aqueous phosphoric acid solutions are studied using shear mechanical spectroscopy as well, a technique which so far could not successfully be applied to characterize the glass transitions of the amorphous ices.
