State-averaged CASSCF with polarizable continuum model for studying photoreactions in solvents: Energies, analytical nuclear gradients, and non-adiabatic couplings

New physical insights into the supporting subspace factorization of XMS-CASPT2 and generalization to multiple spin states via spin-free formulation

This paper introduces a spin-free formulation of the supporting subspace factorization [C. Song and T. J. Martínez, J. Chem. Phys. 149, 044108 (2018)], enabling a reduction in the computational scaling of the extended multi-state complete active space second-order perturbation (XMS-CASPT2) method for arbitrary spins. Compared to the original formulation that is defined in the spin orbitals and is limited to singlet states, the spin-free formulation in this work treats different spin states equivalently, thus naturally generalizing the idea beyond singlet states. In addition, we will present a new way of deriving the supporting subspace factorization with the purpose of understanding its physical interpretation. In this new derivation, we separate the sources that make CASPT2 difficult into the "same-site interactions" and "inter-site interactions." We will first show how the Kronecker sum can be used to remove the same-site interactions in the absence of inter-site interactions, leading to MP2 energy in dressed orbitals. We will then show how the inter-site interactions can be exactly recovered using Löwdin partition, where the supporting subspace concept will naturally arise. The new spin-free formulation maintains the main advantage of the supporting subspace factorization, i.e., allowing XMS-CASPT2 energies to be computed using highly optimized MP2 energy codes and Fock build codes, thus reducing the scaling of XMS-CASPT2 to the same scaling as MP2. We will present and discuss results that benchmark the accuracy and performance of the new method. To demonstrate how the new method can be useful in studying real photochemical systems, the supporting subspace XMS-CASPT2 is applied to a photoreaction sensitive to magnetic field effects. The new spin-free formulation makes it possible to calculate the doublet and quartet states required in this particular photoreaction mechanism.

Analytic Non-adiabatic Couplings for Selected Configuration Interaction via Approximate Degenerate Coupled Perturbed Hartree-Fock

We use degenerate perturbation theory and assume that for degenerate pairs of orbitals, the coupled perturbed Hartree-Fock coefficients are symmetric in the degenerate basis to show [Formula: see text] is the only modification needed in the original molecular orbital basis. This enables us to develop efficient and accurate analytic nonadiabatic couplings between electronic states for selected configuration interactions (CIs). Even when the states belong to different irreducible representations, degenerate orbital pairs cannot be excluded by symmetry. For various excited states of carbon monoxide and trigonal planar ammonia, we benchmark the method against the full CI and find it to be accurate. We create a semi-numerical approach and use it to show that the analytic approach is correct even when a high-symmetry structure is distorted to break symmetry so that near degeneracies in orbitals occur. For a range of geometries of trigonal planar ammonia, we find that the analytic non-adiabatic couplings for selected CI can achieve sufficient accuracy using a small fraction of the full CI space.

Semiclassical Dynamics on Machine-Learned Coupled Multireference Potential Energy Surfaces: Application to the Photodissociation of the Simplest Criegee Intermediate

Determination of high-dimensional potential energy surfaces (PESs) and nonadiabatic couplings have always been quite challenging. To this end, machine learning (ML) models, trained with a finite set of ab initio data, allow accurate prediction of such properties. To express the PESs in terms of atomic contributions is the cornerstone of any ML based technique because it can be easily scaled to large systems. In this work, we have constructed high fidelity PESs and nonadiabatic coupling terms at the CASSCF level of ab initio data using a machine learning technique, namely, kernel-ridge regression. Additional MRCI-level calculations were carried out to assess the quality of the PESs. We use these machine-learned PESs and nonadiabatic couplings to simulate excited-state molecular dynamics based on Tully's fewest-switches surface hopping method (FSSH). FSSH is a semiclassical method in which nuclei move on the PESs due to the electrons according to the laws of classical mechanics. Nonadiabatic effects are taken into account in terms of transitions between PESs. We apply this scheme to study the O-O photodissociation of the simplest Criegee intermediate (CH₂OO). The FSSH trajectories were initiated on the lowest optically bright singlet excited state (S₂) and propagated along the three most important internal coordinates, namely, O-O and C-O bond distances and the COO bond angle. Some of the trajectories end up on energetically lower PESs as a result of radiationless transfer through conical intersections. All of the trajectories lead to the dissociation of the O-O bond due to the dissociative nature of the excited PESs through one of the two dissociative channels. The simulation reveals that there is about 88.4% probability of dissociation through the lower channel leading to the H₂CO (X¹A₁) and O (¹D) products, whereas there is only 11.6% probability of dissociation through the upper channel leading to H₂CO (a³A″) and O (³P) products.

State averaged CASSCF in AMOEBA polarizable water model for simulating nonadiabatic molecular dynamics with nonequilibrium solvation effects

This paper presents a state-averaged complete active space self-consistent field (SA-CASSCF) in the atomic multipole optimized energetics for biomolecular application (AMOEBA) polarizable water model, which enables rigorous simulation of non-adiabatic molecular dynamics with nonequilibrium solvation effects. The molecular orbital and configuration interaction coefficients of the solute wavefunction, and the induced dipoles on solvent atoms, are solved by minimizing the state averaged energy variationally. In particular, by formulating AMOEBA water models and the polarizable continuum model (PCM) in a unified way, the algorithms developed for computing SA-CASSCF/PCM energies, analytical gradients, and non-adiabatic couplings in our previous work can be generalized to SA-CASSCF/AMOEBA by properly substituting a specific list of variables. Implementation of this method will be discussed with the emphasis on how the calculations of different terms are partitioned between the quantum chemistry and molecular mechanics codes. We will present and discuss results that demonstrate the accuracy and performance of the implementation. Next, we will discuss results that compare three solvent models that work with SA-CASSCF, i.e., PCM, fixed-charge force fields, and the newly implemented AMOEBA. Finally, the new SA-CASSCF/AMOEBA method has been interfaced with the ab initio multiple spawning method to carry out non-adiabatic molecular dynamics simulations. This method is demonstrated by simulating the photodynamics of the model retinal protonated Schiff base molecule in water.

Conical Intersections in Solution with Polarizable Embedding: Integral-Exact Direct Reaction Field

A common strategy to exploring the properties and reactivity of complex systems is to use quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) embedding, wherein a QM region is defined and treated with electronic structure theory, and the remainder of the system is treated with a force field. Important to the description of electronic excited states, especially those of charge-transfer character, is the treatment of the coupling between the QM and MM subsystems. The state of the art is to use a polarizable force field for the MM region and mutually couple the QM wavefunction and MM induced dipoles, in addition to the usual electrostatic embedding, yielding a polarizable embedding (QM/MM-Pol) approach. However, we showed previously that current popular QM/MM-Pol approaches exhibit issues of root flipping and/or incorrect descriptions of electronic crossings in multistate calculations [J. Chem. Theory Comput. 14, 2137 (2018)]. Here, we demonstrate a solution to these problems with an integral-exact reformulation of the direct reaction field approach of Thole and Van Duijnen (QM/MM-IEDRF). The resulting embedding potential includes one- and two-electron operators and many-body dipole-induced dipole interactions and thus includes a natural description of the screening of electron-electron interactions by the MM induced dipoles. Pauli repulsion from the environment is mimicked by effective core potentials on the MM atoms. Inherent to the DRF approach is the assumption that MM dipoles respond instantaneously to the positions of the QM electrons; therefore, dispersion interactions are captured approximately. All electronic states are eigenfunctions of the same Hamiltonian, while the polarization induced in the environment and the associated energetic stabilization are unique to each state. This allows for a consistent definition of transition properties and state crossings. We demonstrate QM/MM-IEDRF by exploring the influence of a (polarizable) inert xenon matrix environment on the conical intersection underlying the photoisomerization of ethylene.
