Nanocrystal Assemblies: Current Advances and Open Problems

We explore the potential of nanocrystals (a term used equivalently to nanoparticles) as building blocks for nanomaterials, and the current advances and open challenges for fundamental science developments and applications. Nanocrystal assemblies are inherently multiscale, and the generation of revolutionary material properties requires a precise understanding of the relationship between structure and function, the former being determined by classical effects and the latter often by quantum effects. With an emphasis on theory and computation, we discuss challenges that hamper current assembly strategies and to what extent nanocrystal assemblies represent thermodynamic equilibrium or kinetically trapped metastable states. We also examine dynamic effects and optimization of assembly protocols. Finally, we discuss promising material functions and examples of their realization with nanocrystal assemblies.

Assembly-inspired multiferroicity with nontrivial Chern insulating phase from exohedral metallofullerenes

Fullerene-assembled low-dimensional materials have been experimentally realized in polymorphic forms and have attracted significant interest very recently. Here, we predict a two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb lattice material TM2(C60)3 (TM = Cr, Mo, and W) assembled from exohedral metallofullerene clusters TM(C60)3 that could exhibit planar triangular geometries. According to first-principles calculations combined with Monte Carlo simulations, we suggest that these 2D assembled materials exhibit various exotic physical properties, including ferromagnetism, ferroelectricity, and quantum anomalous Hall effect. Interestingly, mechanical strains could effectively tune their magnetic moments and switch the conducting spin channel of the Dirac bands at the Fermi level. Our work provides a new cluster-assembly design strategy toward cluster-assembled 2D materials based on fullerene characters.

Hydride-doped coinage metal superatoms and their catalytic applications

Superatomic constructs have been identified as a critical component of future technologies. The isolation of coinage metal superatoms relies on partially reducing metallic frameworks to accommodate the mixed valent state required to generate a superatom. Controlling this reduction requires careful consideration in reducing the agent, temperature, and the ligand that directs the self-assembly process. Hydride-based reducing agents dominate the synthetic wet chemical routes to coinage metal clusters. However, within this category, a unique subset of superatoms that retain a hydride/s within the nanocluster post-reduction have emerged. These stable constructs have only recently been characterized in the solid state and have highly unique structural features and properties. The difficulty in identifying the position of hydrides in electron-rich metallic constructs requires the combination and correlation of several analytical methods, including ESI-MS, NMR, SCXRD, and DFT. This text highlights the importance of NMR in detecting hydride environments in these superatomic systems. Added to the complexity of these systems is the dual nature of the hydride, which can act as metallic hydrogen in some cases, resulting in entirely different physical properties. This review includes all hydride-doped superatomic nanoclusters emphasizing synthesis, structure, and catalytic potential.

Tuning the electronic structure of gold cluster-assembled materials by altering organophosphine ligands

Superatomic clusters can be assembled to build bulk matter, where the individual characteristics are preserved. The main benefit of these materials over conventional bulk species is the capability to tailor their features by altering the physicochemical identities of individual clusters. Electronic properties of metal clusters can be modified by a protective shell of ligands that attach to the surface and make the whole nanoparticle soluble in organic or aqueous solvents. In the present work, we demonstrate that properly chosen ligands provide not only steric protection from aggregation but also tune the redox activity of metal clusters. We investigate the role of the ligands in electronic structure tunability and ligand-field splitting. Our first-principles calculations agree with the experiments, showing that phosphine-protected gold materials are small gap semiconductors. The obtained bandgaps strongly depend on the ligand used. Hence, using phosphine and organophosphine ligands should be feasible and promising while designing the novel superatom-based materials since the desired range of the bandgap might be achieved (by the proper choice of the ligand).

Dual-Valence Characteristics of Be11: Tin/Lead-like Superatom

To enhance the superatom family, the new superatom analogue Be11 of group IVA elements has been developed. Be11 can exhibit multiple valence states (+2 and +4), similar to carbon-group elements, and is capable of forming stable ionic compounds with other atoms such as carbon, chalcogen, (super)halogen, and hydroxyl. This resembles how tin and lead atoms combine with these elements to form stable molecules. Their special stability can be rationalized from the perspective of a cluster shell model. Sn or Pb could be the nearest atomic analogue to Be11 in group IVA, as the +2 oxidation state is more stable than the +4 oxidation state. This comparative investigation highlights the resemblance between Be11 and carbon-group elements, which encourages additional exploration within the superatom family.

Tailoring Vacancy Defects in Isolated Atomically Precise Silver Clusters through Mercury-Doped Intermediates

Vacancy defects are known to have significant effects on the physical and chemical properties of nanomaterials. However, the formation and structural dynamics of vacancy defects in atomically precise coinage metal clusters have hardly been explored due to the challenges associated with isolation of such defected clusters. Herein, we isolate [Ag28(BDT)12]2- (BDT is 1,3-benzenedithiol), a cluster with a "missing atom" site compared to [Ag29(BDT)12]3-, whose precise structure is known from X-ray diffraction. [Ag28(BDT)12]2- was formed in the gas-phase by collisional heating of [Ag28Hg(BDT)12]2-, a Hg-doped analogue of the parent cluster. The structural changes resulting from the loss of the Hg heteroatom were investigated by trapped ion mobility mass spectrometry. Density functional theory calculations were performed to provide further insights into the defect structures, and molecular dynamics simulations revealed defect site-dependent structural relaxation processes.

Second-order superatoms: Au52-PAP featuring a three-dimensional cluster-of-clusters core

The recent characterization of Au52-PAP cluster can be viewed as a three-dimensional arrangement featuring four Au13 motifs. As a result, a new set of superatomic orbitals are built up from the superatomic shell of each constituent unit, denoted by 1S'21P'62S'21D'102P'61F'6 and, thus, referred to as a second-order superatomic shell structure. This favors the rationalization of larger species toward the formation of cluster-assembled materials of different sizes.

Accessing Ta/Cu Architectures via Metal-Metal Salt Metatheses: Heterobimetallic C-H Bond Activation Affords μ-Hydrides

We employ a metal-metal salt metathesis strategy to access low-valent tantalum-copper heterometallic architectures (Ta-μ2 -H2 -Cu and Ta-μ3 -H2 -Cu3 ) that emulate structural elements proposed for surface alloyed nanomaterials. Whereas cluster assembly with carbonylmetalates is well precedented, the use of the corresponding polyarene transition metal anions is underexplored, despite recognition of these highly reactive fragments as storable sources of atomic Mn- . Our application of this strategy provides structurally unique early-late bimetallic species. These complexes incorporate bridging hydride ligands during their syntheses, the origin of which is elucidated via detailed isotopic labelling studies. Modification of ancillary ligand sterics and electronics alters the mechanism of bimetallic assembly; a trinuclear complex resulting from dinuclear C-H activation is demonstrated as an intermediate en route to formation of the bimetallic. Further validating the promise of this rational, bottom-up approach, a unique tetranuclear species was synthesized, featuring a Ta centre bearing three Ta-Cu interactions.

Probing Superatomic Orbitals of Sc-Doped and Undoped Silver Cluster Anions via Photoelectron Angular Anisotropy

Valence s electrons in alkali- or coinage-metal clusters are conceived to delocalize over the metal frameworks. The electrons occupy so-called superatomic orbitals (SAOs, i.e., 1S, 1P, 1D, 2S, 1F, ...), which provide an essential picture for understanding the size-dependent, unique properties of these metal clusters. While such electronic shells are unambiguously identified in their photoelectron spectra and supported by electronic structure calculations, characterization of SAOs in heteroatom-doped metal clusters has remained elusive as the doping significantly affects its energy levels and even alters the ordering of SAOs. Here, we present a photoelectron imaging study to explore SAOs formed in Sc-doped and undoped silver cluster anions, Ag_NSc^- (N = 15, 16) and Ag_N^- (N = 18, 19). Photoelectron angular distributions from their outermost SAOs are clearly visualized, whose characters are analyzed with the aid of density functional theory calculations. The present methodology enables us to explore not only the quantized energy levels but also the spatial distributions of SAOs formed in various metal cluster anions.

Galvanic replacement-induced introduction of a heteroligand into bimetallic and trimetallic nanoclusters

Heteroleptic 8-electron silver-rich alloy nanoclusters, [Au@Au₄Ag₁₂(dtp)₇(PPh₃)₄]²⁺ (1) and [Pt@Au₄Ag₁₁(dtp)₇(PPh₃)₄] (2), were successfully synthesized via a galvanic replacement reaction of 1,1-dithiolate-protected M@Ag₂₀ (M = Au and Pt) nanoclusters with Au(I)-phosphine salts, leading to the alteration of the cluster nuclearity and geometry of shell skeletons but retaining the same 8-electron count.

Bridging the gas and condensed phases for metal-atom encapsulating silicon- and germanium-cage superatoms: electrical properties of assembled superatoms

With the development of nanocluster (NC) synthesis methods in the gas phase, atomically precise NCs composed of a finite number of metal and semiconductor atoms have emerged. NCs are expected to be the smallest units for nanomaterials with various functions, such as catalysts, optoelectronic materials, and electromagnetic devices. The exploration of a stable NC called a magic number NC has revealed a couple of important factors, such as a highly symmetric geometric structure and an electronic shell closure, and a magic number behavior is often enhanced by mixing additional elements. A synergetic effect between geometric and electronic structures leads to the formation of chemically robust NC units called superatoms (SAs), which act as individual units assembled as thin films. The agglomeration of non-ligated bare SAs is desirable in fabricating the assembled SAs associated with intrinsic SA nature. The recent development of an intensive pulsed magnetron sputtering method opens up the scalable synthesis of SAs in the gas phase, enabling the fabrication of SA assembly coupled with the non-destructive deposition of a soft-landing technique. This perspective describes our recent progress in the investigation of the formation of binary cage SA (BCSA) assembled thin films composed of metal-atom encapsulating silicon-cage SAs (M@Si₁₆) and germanium-cage SAs (M@Ge₁₆), with a focus on their electrical properties associated with a conduction mechanism toward the development of new functional nanoscale materials.
