Abstract
Background This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of various filling and retreatment techniques for oval-shaped root canals. Methods Sixty distal roots of mandibular molar teeth were included in the study. The roots were prepared using the ProTaper Next (PTN) X4 rotary system and irrigation with 2.5% NaOCl. The roots were then divided into three groups and filled with Total Fill BC Sealer (FKG Dentaire) using three different techniques (n=20): single cone (SC), GuttaCore (GC), and warm vertical condensation (WVC). The retreatment procedure was performed using two different instrumentation techniques: Reciproc 50 (R50) and PTN X5 (n=10). To analyze the remaining filling material, the roots were divided buccolingually in two parts with the help of diamond separators, and photographs were taken at x16 magnification using a dental operating microscope (DOM). The ratio of the remaining filling materials was calculated using image analysis software and statistically evaluated using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results None of the assessed retreatment procedures completely removed the filling materials from the root canals. For both instrumentation techniques, more root canal filling material remained in the WVC group (P<0.05). Conclusion The GC filling technique had a higher cleaning percentage than the WVC and SC techniques in the coronal region. The R50 system was found to be superior to the PTN X5 system for retreatment, and the root canal fillings applied using the WVC technique were more difficult to remove than the fillings applied using the other techniques.

Abstract
AIM To fill the severely curved root canals with different filling techniques and to compare these techniques using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty extracted mandibular first molars (degree of root canal curvature >25°) were selected. All samples were divided into four groups and filled with one of the following techniques: lateral condensation, single-cone, continuous-wave obturation, and core carrier. After they were scanned by micro-CT, the total area, filled area and void area of the root canal were calculated. The Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used for statistical analysis (p < 0.05). RESULTS It was shown that significantly more filling material was used in the lateral condensation and core carrier technique groups at 2 and 5 mm than in the single-cone and continuous-wave obturation technique groups (p < 0.05). It was observed no statistically significant difference at 8 mm (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION No technique could completely fill in root canal. Regarding the coronal part, all techniques can be used for more effective filling as long as a good condensation is achieved. The use of a plugger with an optimal size according to the localisation of root canal curvature and the choice of a heat-resistant root canal sealer affects the success of the treatment in the thermoplastic techniques.

Abstract
AIM AND OBJECTIVE This study aimed to compare the apical sealing ability and periapical extrusion in the Thermafil™ obturation technique, with and without an apical barrier of MTA, with lateral condensation technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty freshly extracted human central incisors were instrumented with the crown down technique and divided into three experimental groups. Group I: lateral condensation technique obturation, group II: Thermafil obturation (DENTSPLY Tulsa), and group III: this group was obturated into two parts; first MTA (ProRoot) was placed in apical 3 mm and later the remaining canal was obturated with Thermafil™ obturation technique (DENTSPLY Tulsa). AH Plus sealer was used in all the groups. Specimens of all the groups were layered with nail paint excluding the apical 3 mm. Twenty-four hours later, all the teeth were suspended in Black India ink for 48 hours. Finally, all the teeth were decalcified, rendered transparent and linear dye leakage and periapical extrusion was measured using ×60 magnification of stereomicroscope with an in-built ruler. RESULTS A Chi-square test done to evaluate periapical extrusion showed there was a significant difference found among all the groups (p < 0.05), whereas in case of linear apical dye leakage using a Student's "t" test showed there was no significant difference among all the groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION Despite showing apical leakage, the thermo-plasticized gutta-percha obturation technique can be advantageous when used with MTA as an apical barrier since there is no scope for apical extrusion along with the benefit of three-dimensional obturation of the root canal system when compared with the lateral condensation technique. Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the obturation quality between canals obturated with gutta-percha/AH Plus sealer (GP group) and resin-coated GP/EndoREZ® sealer (ER group). METHODS A total sample of 90 mandibular premolar teeth was divided into 2 groups (2 × 45 canals): the GP group and ER group. Each group was further divided into 3 subgroups (n = 15): cold lateral compaction (CLC), warm lateral compaction (WLC) and single cone (SC). The teeth were subsequently embedded in resin and sectioned horizontally at 1, 3, 6 and 9 mm. All sections were then viewed with a stereomicroscope at ×40 magnification. The area occupied by core filling materials was determined using Cell^D software. RESULTS With CLC, the percentage of core filling materials in the ER group was significantly higher than in the GP group at the 1- and 3-mm levels. Similarly, with WLC, the percentage of core filling material in the ER group was significantly higher than in the GP group at the 1-, 3- and 9-mm levels. With SC, the percentage of core filling materials in the ER group was significantly higher than in the GP group at all levels. CONCLUSIONS It can be concluded that the resin-coated GP/EndoREZ® sealer is superior to the gutta-percha/AH Plus in the percentage of core filling material.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate apical microleakage after use of the Resilon system in comparison with gutta-percha. The materials used were 54 mesial roots of mandibular molars with an apical curvature of 20-40 degrees . The root canals were instrumented with the Prosystem GT(R) and obturated with: Group I: Gutta-percha + Sealer by lateral condensation (n = 25); Group II: Gutta-percha + Sealer, complemented by System B and Obtura II (n = 25); Group III: Resilon + System B and Obtura II (n = 25); Group IV: Resilon by lateral condensation (n = 25). After immersion in India ink, the specimens were demineralized and rendered transparent. Apical dye leakage was analyzed with a stereomicroscope and a digital camera connected to a computerized system. All groups showed different degrees of apical dye microleakage. The Kruskal-Wallis test revealed that the largest leakage occurred in Group I (P < 0.05), whereas the other groups presented a similar pattern of microleakage (P > 0.05). Thermoplastification negatively influenced the apical sealing ability of Resilon. Gutta-percha points and conventional sealer yielded the highest values of apical leakage, especially when the lateral condensation technique was used. Regardless of the obturation technique employed, the Resilon system provided the lowest mean values of apical leakage, but did not provide hermetic sealing of the root canal system.

Abstract
AIM To compare ex vivo the penetration of three brands of gutta-percha cones, compacted under a constant force and heated to different temperatures, into artificial lateral canals. METHODOLOGY Resin blocks with simulated main canals, each having two lateral canals (C at 6.5 and A at 13 mm from the surface of the resin block), were selected. A gutta-percha cone, either Mynol MF, Hygenic MF or GT Tulsa 0.04 was compacted into each main canal for 5 s using a wire rod with a diameter of 0.7 mm soldered to the bottom of a metal cylinder, with a force of 2.7 kg at controlled temperatures of 37, 42, 47, 52, 60 degrees C. The penetration of each brand of gutta-percha into 60 lateral canals (10 at each temperature) was measured using a stereomicroscope. Statistical analysis was performed using the ANOVA, the Scheffè test and the t-test. RESULTS None of the three brands of cones entered up to 0.1 mm within either lateral canal until a temperature of 47 degrees C was reached; at that temperature only Mynol cones (P < or = 0.05) penetrated in four of 10 A-level canals (mean 0.13 +/- 0.19 mm) and in all 10 C-level canals (mean 0.43 +/- 0.12 mm). The A-level lateral canals were penetrated at 52 degrees C by Mynol cones (mean 0.76 +/- 0.34 mm) to a significantly greater distance (P < or = 0.05) than Tulsa cones (mean 0.31 +/- 0.12 mm) and Hygenic cones (mean 0.11 +/- 0.08 mm). At 60 degrees C the Mynol cones (mean 1.93 +/- 0.34 mm) penetrated significantly more (P < or = 0.05) than the Tulsa cones (mean 0.86 +/- 0.22 mm) and Hygenic cones (mean 0.67 +/- 0.19 mm). The C-level lateral canals were penetrated at 52 degrees C by Mynol cones (mean 0.91 +/- 0.29 mm) to a significantly greater distance (P < or = 0.05) than Tulsa cones (mean 0.47 +/- 0.16 mm) and Hygenic cones (mean 0.46 +/- 0.15 mm), whilst no significant difference was found at 60 degrees C. CONCLUSIONS When heated and compacted, the three gutta-percha cones penetrated the lateral canals to different degrees. They penetrated more than 0.43 mm into the lateral canals only at temperatures higher than 47 degrees C.

Abstract
The introduction of a polybutadiene-diisocyanate-methacylate resin-coating of gutta-percha enables the polyisoprene to be chemically coupled to methacrylate-based resin root canal sealers. This study examined the effectiveness of using passively fitting cones of this type of gutta-percha with a dual-cured version of EndoREZ sealer in obturating cleaned and shaped root canals. The hydrophilic nature of the sealer enabled the creation of an extensive network of 800 to 1200 mum long sealer resin tags after removal of the endodontic smear layer. Although no adhesive was employed, thin hybrid layers in root dentin were observed when EDTA was used as the final rinse. Nevertheless, interfacial gaps and silver leakage could be observed along the sealer-dentin interfaces that might be attributed predominantly to polymerization shrinkage of the sealer. Gaps and silver leakage were also identified between the gutta-percha resin-coating and the sealer.

Abstract
AIM To compare the proportion of gutta-percha, sealer and voids following the filling of simulated root canals in plastic blocks using two warm gutta-percha techniques. METHODOLOGY Ten simulated root canals in plastic blocks were prepared using System GT Rotary Files and a.02 taper size 40 Quantec rotary nickel-titanium instrument and then filled with MicroSeal and Kerr EWT sealer. A further 10 simulated canals were prepared solely with System GT Rotary Files and obturated with System B/Obtura II and Kerr EWT sealer. All blocks were sectioned at 1 mm intervals. The sectioned root fillings were photographed through a stereomicroscope and the resultant slides scanned. The images were analysed using adobe photoshop 6.0 to give the proportions of gutta-percha, sealer or void at each level. The data were analysed using unpaired Student's t-test and Mann-Whitney U-test. RESULTS The MicroSeal technique produced a dense homogeneous gutta-percha fill at the apical 1 and 2 mm levels similar to the System B/Obtura II technique, but further coronally the sealer became mixed into the MicroFlow gutta-percha producing a heterogeneous mass with significantly less (P < 0.05) solid gutta-percha in the root filling compared to System B/Obtura II. The MicroSeal technique generally had more pooling of cement than the System B technique, however, this was only significantly different (P < 0.05) at the 4 mm level. The System B/Obtura II obturation gave an average of 99.27% +/- 1.09 gutta-percha fill at all levels. CONCLUSIONS The MicroSeal technique produced a heterogeneous fill consisting of the MicroFlow Master Cone and gutta-percha from the MicroFlow Cartridge mixed with sealer. The System B/Obtura II technique produced a homogeneous fill at all levels.

Abstract
AIM The apical sealing ability of a coated carrier system was evaluated in extracted human teeth and compared with lateral and thermomechanical condensation techniques using dye penetration. METHODOLOGY Sixty-four extracted single-rooted teeth were instrumented to an apical size 30 using 4% taper Hero 642 trade mark instruments (Micromega, Besançon, France). The sample was divided into three experimental groups. Twenty teeth were randomly obturated with lateral condensation, 20 with thermomechanical compaction and 20 teeth with the Herofill trade mark Soft-Core system. Four teeth were used as positive and negative controls. The teeth were covered with nail varnish up to 2 mm from the apical foramen and immersed in a 2% aqueous methylene blue dye solution for 1 week and then washed, dehydrated and embedded in resin. The apical 1 mm of each tooth was removed to reveal the apical limit of the preparation. Transverse sections of the teeth were taken at 500, 1000 and 1500 micro m from this point and evaluated for apical leakage. Significant differences between the preparations were analysed with a semiautomatic analyser and the ratio of the dye-penetrated surface to the total dentinal surface was calculated. RESULTS Statistical analysis of the results demonstrated significantly less leakage for the Herofill trade mark Soft-Core system compared to lateral condensation in terms of total mean dentinal surface and at the 500 micro m level. No other differences were noted between Herofill trade mark Soft-Core and thermomechanical or lateral condensation, either for the total mean value or at each level. CONCLUSIONS The Herofill trade mark Soft-Core system was a reliable obturation system in the apical portion and compared favourably with other gutta-percha filling techniques.
