Regional Odontodysplasia with Actinomycosis Infection: A Rare Case Report

A rare dental developmental anomaly known as regional odontodysplasia (RO) manifests itself in hypoplastic and hypomineralized teeth with discolored yellow to brown enamel. Radiographically, the affected tooth appears as a shell tooth with a large pulp chamber and a thin layer of teeth structure. The treatment plan is not well-established, and a multidisciplinary approach is often needed. However, a literature review revealed that most of the studies regarding RO are case reports, and more research, including epidemiological, genetic, and experimental studies, is needed to understand this condition better. Additionally, the cause of this anomaly is currently unknown. Removing the affected tooth is a controversial matter, and the treatment options should be chosen on an individual basis, considering the patient's goals for treatment. This report describes an uncommon case of an 8-year-old girl who has RO affecting the front teeth in the upper jaw and a long-standing infection caused by actinomycosis.

Regional Odontodysplasia: A Systematic Review of Case Reports

Regional odontodysplasia is a rare developmental disorder characterised by hypoplasia and hypomineralisation of enamel and dentin. Our systematic review aimed to organise the knowledge on localisation, symptomatology and treatment methods in patients with regional odontodysplasia based on case reports published in the databases PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science. Case reports were described in 28 different countries, considering 180 patients (including 91 females). Regional odontodysplasia occurs mainly in both deciduous and permanent dentition (66.1%). The affected teeth were observed more frequently in the maxilla (70.0%), especially on the left side (45.6%). The most common reported symptoms were ghost teeth, poorly developed buds, yellowish-brown colour of crowns and delayed eruption of permanent teeth in affected quadrants. The most popular treatment method was surgical treatment (78.6%) with subsequent prosthetic therapy (34.6%). Based on the review of cases, pathognomonic clinical and radiological signs can be found, however, it is difficult to reach a consensus on the choice of treatment method.

Management of regional odontodysplasia: a 10-year-follow-up case report and literature review

The aim of this article was to review the literature and present a case of regional odontodysplasia (ROD) with special emphasis on clinical and radiographic features. A 6-year-old girl was referred to our department with the chief complaint of missing her permanent maxillary left central incisor, lateral incisor, and both of her canines. The gingiva of the involved region was enlarged, fibrous, and tense. Radiographic examination showed abnormal tooth formation and shortened roots. After 3 years of follow up with temporary prosthetic rehabilitation, periodontal surgery was performed. Following forced eruption and levelling, abnormal tooth eruption and root development were observed. ProRoot MTA (Dentsply-Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) was used for root canal treatment. Intracanal fiber posts selected and access cavities were restored with composite resin. Prosthetic rehabilitation was completed with zirconia ceramic crowns. The time of diagnosis, characteristics of the present/existing symptoms, and functional and esthetic needs of the patient should be considered to determine the optimal treatment modality for ROD.

Role of inflammation in developmental odontogenic pathosis

Periapical infection in the primary tooth may lead to periapical abscess, granuloma, radicular cyst and even osteomyelitis. The infection in primary teeth can also affect the developing successor teeth leading to hypomineralization, hypoplasia, arrest of tooth development, regional odontodysplasia, delayed eruption etc. The purpose of this article is to report a case of malformed permanent tooth in relation to overlying infected deciduous teeth. The probable role of inflammation in pathogenesis of the present condition is also being discussed.

Regional odontodysplasia: orthodontic treatment and transplantation of premolars

Regional odontodysplasia is a rare and unique dental anomaly involving both dentitions, but mostly the teeth of 1 quadrant. This report describes the combined surgical and orthodontic treatment of a boy with regional odontodysplasia. The mandibular right central and lateral incisors and the canine (as well as the deciduous predecessors) were affected. In a 2-step procedure, the maxillary right and left second premolars were autotransplanted to the affected area. The extraction sites in the maxilla were closed, and a good functional occlusion was established.

Progressive dental development in regional odontodysplasia

Regional odontodysplasia (RO), also known as ghost teeth, is an unusual nonhereditary developmental anomaly of tooth formation that characteristically affects enamel and dentin formation of the primary and/or permanent dentition. In the present paper, we report a case of RO affecting a 7-year-old boy, with 9 years of follow-up. During this time, progressive development of dental tissue was observed, including complete root formation. However, delayed dental eruption was evident. In view of these findings, we discuss the clinical presentation, pathogenesis, differential diagnosis, and treatment of RO.
