Effect of groove placement on the retention/resistance of resin-bonded retainers for maxillary and mandibular second molars

Modified PEEK resin-bonded fixed dental prosthesis as an interim restoration after implant placement

A polyetheretherketone (PEEK) (BioHPP) framework veneered with composite resin was used as an alternative material for the fabrication of an interim 3-pontic resin-bonded fixed dental prosthesis (RBFDP) after implant placement. The low modulus of elasticity (4 GPa) of PEEK combined with the use of indirect light-polymerized resin as a veneering material used for a RBFDP provided an advantage over metal ceramics or ceramics in dampening the occlusal forces and reducing debonding rates. Further long-term clinical evidence is required before recommending the application as a substitute material.

Resin-Bonded Bridges--Can We Cement Them 'High'?

Controversy exists surrounding resin-bonded bridges (RBBs), particularly with regards to abutment preparation. Should the abutments be prepared? If the abutments are prepared what design should be adopted? If there is to be no preparation, will there be space for the restoration? Many factors need consideration when planning for this treatment. This article aims to explore the effect of abutment preparation. In this regard, a literature review was conducted to present the latest available evidence. CPD/Clinical Relevance: Minimal intervention is key in modern dentistry, so clinicians must be able to make confident decisions in the provision of minimally invasive treatments like the RBB and be aware of the latest evidence.

Digital modeling technology for full dental crown tooth preparation

A dental defect is one of the most common oral diseases, and it often requires a full crown restoration. In this clinical operation, the dentist must manually prepare the affected tooth for the full crown so that it has a convergence angle between 4° and 10°, no undercuts, and uniform and even shoulder widths and depths using a high speed diamond bur in the patient׳s mouth within one hour, which is a difficult task that requires visual-manual operation. The quality of the tooth preparation has an important effect on the success rate of the subsequent prosthodontic treatment. This study involved research into digital modeling technology for full dental crown tooth preparation. First, the margin line of the tooth preparation was designed using a semi-automatic interactive process. Second, the inserting direction was automatically computed. Then, the characteristic parameters and the constraints on the tooth preparation were defined for the model. Next, the shoulder and axial surface of the tooth preparation were formed using parametric modeling. Finally, the implicit surface of a radial basis function was used to construct the tooth preparation׳s occlusal surface. The experimental results verified that the method of digital modeling for full crown preparation proposed in this study can quickly and accurately implement personalized designs of various parameters, such as the shoulder width and the convergence angle; it provides a digital design tool for full crown preparation.

A review of the success and failure characteristics of resin-bonded bridges

OBJECTIVES

This literature review was designed to assess and compare the success rates and modes of failure of metal-framed, fibre-reinforced composite and all-ceramic resin-bonded bridges.

MATERIALS AND METHOD

A Medline search (Ovid), supplemented by hand searching, was conducted to identify prospective and retrospective cohort studies on different resin-bonded bridges within the last 16 years. A total of 49 studies met the pre-set inclusion criteria. Success rates of 25 studies on metal-framed, 17 studies on fibre-reinforced composite and 7 studies on all-ceramic resin-bonded bridges were analysed and characteristics of failures were identified.

RESULTS

The analysis of the studies indicated an estimation of annual failure rates per year to be 4.6% (±1.3%, 95% CI) for metal-framed, 4.1% (±2.1%, 95% CI) for fibre-reinforced and 11.7% (±1.8%, 95% CI) for all-ceramic resin-bonded bridges. The most frequent complications were: debonding for metal-framed, resin-bonded bridges (93% of all failures); delamination of the composite veneering material for the fibre-reinforced bridges (41%) and fracture of the framework for the all-ceramic bridges (57%).

CONCLUSIONS

All types of resin-bonded bridges provide an effective short- to medium-term option, with all-ceramic performing least well and having the least favourable mode of failure. The methods of failures were different for different bridges with metal frameworks performing the best over time.

Comparative evaluation of retentive properties of acid etched resin bonded fixed partial dentures

BACKGROUND

Little consensus exist in suitable tooth preparation design and alloy pre-treatment methods for improving the retention of resin bonded fixed partial dentures (RBFPDs).

METHODS

An in-vitro experiment was done with four designs. Group A: standard form, B: wings and proximal slices, C: wings, proximal slice and grooves, D: wings, proximal slice, grooves and occlusal coverage. Alloys were subjected to pre-treatment procedures like Group I: control, II: sand blasting, III: electro etching, IV: tin plating. Debonding forces of the castings were recorded in a universal testing machine and results were analyzed by student's 't' test.

RESULTS

Group B, C and D showed higher debonding forces compared to A. However, there were no significant differences in mean force values among Groups B, C and D. Group II, III and IV with different alloy pre-treatment methods demonstrated higher values against control. Inter group variations among Group II, III and IV were not significant.

CONCLUSION

Tooth preparation with adequate surface extensions and pre-treatment procedures of casting alloys are two parameters that play important role in determining the retentive features of RBFPDs. Different types of tooth preparation designs and alloy pre-treatment methods exert almost similar influence in increasing the retention of acid etched RBFPDs.

The design and fabrication of a segmented cast-metal resin-bonded splint

This article describes a technique for splinting periodontally compromised teeth and for preventing orthodontically treated teeth from relapsing. The fabrication of a segmented cast-metal resin-bonded splint, with nonrigid connection of the splinted teeth, eliminates the many problems of a conventional multi-unit resin-bonded splint.

Tooth preparations designed for posterior resin-bonded fixed partial dentures: a clinical report

Numerous designs for posterior resin-bonded fixed partial dentures have been reported in the dental literature, but a methodical technique is still lacking. A groove, plate, and strut approach involving minimal preparation of posterior abutments to receive a resin-bonded fixed partial dentures is presented. The essential clinical and laboratory procedures are illustrated.
