When figure-ground segregation fails: Exploring antagonistic interactions in figure-ground perception

Perceptual fading of an artificial scotoma can be viewed as a failure of figure-ground segregation, providing a useful tool for investigating possible mechanisms and processes involved in figure-ground perception. Weisstein's antagonistic magnocellular/parvocellular stream figure-ground model proposes P stream activity encodes figure, and M stream activity encodes background. Where a boundary separates two regions, the region that is perceived as figure or ground is determined by the outcome of antagonism between M and P activity within each region and across the boundary between them. The region with the relatively stronger P "figure signal" is perceived as figure, and the region with the relatively stronger M "ground signal" is perceived as ground. From this perspective, fading occurs when the figure signal is overwhelmed by the ground signal. Strengthening the figure signal or weakening the ground signal should make the figure more resistant to fading. Based on research showing that red light suppresses M activity and short wavelength sensitive S-cones provide minimal input to M cells, we used red and blue light to reduce M activity in both figure and ground. The time to fade from stimulus onset until the figure completely disappeared was measured. Every combination of gray, green, red, and blue as figure and/or ground was tested. Compared with gray and green light, fade times were greatest when red or blue light either strengthened the figure signal by reducing M activity in the figure, or weakened the ground signal by reducing M activity in ground. The results support a dynamic antagonistic relationship between M and P activity contributing to figure-ground perception as envisioned in Weisstein's model.

Temporal resolution of figures and grounds

Recent studies have demonstrated that establishing figure-ground organization influences other perceptual processes. Specifically, figures undergo perceptual processing earlier than ground regions (Lester, Hecht, & Vecera, 2009), and they are processed for longer durations relative to ground regions (Hecht & Vecera, 2011). One potential consequence of figures' extended processing is degraded temporal resolution compared to ground regions. To test this hypothesis, observers completed a modified flicker-fusion task while viewing either displays that contained well-defined figures and grounds or displays that were ambiguous. As evidenced by increased sensitivity for flickering targets on the ground regions, the current results support the claim that figures have poorer temporal resolution than ground regions.

Dissociation of visual and spatial processing in working memory

Although models of working memory originally included visuo-spatial memory as an undifferentiated component, recent work indicates that spatial location is separable from other visual characteristics. The evidence which is derived from interference, however, typically requires the division of conscious attention between primary and interference tasks. In the present experiments the differential effects of an unattended flickering surround upon serial recall of a central stimulus presentation were investigated. Colour changes in the surround created more interference than achromatic flicker when the task was to report either the colours or the patterns presented in the target. When the locations of the targets were required, however, the situation was reversed and the achromatic flicker created more interference than did the colour flicker. It is suggested that this double dissociation of identification and location is best understood in terms of differential involvement of the magnocellular and parvocellular pathways.

Figure-ground organization in different phases of the perceptual alternation phenomenon

Two experiments on figure-ground organization were designed to examine whether the regions of an ambiguous stimulus perceived as "figure" vary as a function of regional area and experience with the stimulus. In Exp. 1 the perceived duration of each interpretation was recorded during continuous viewing for 10 subjects who had been trained until both percepts appeared with statistical regularity (stationary phase). In Exp. 2 the first interpretation reported by 172 naive observers after a few seconds of pattern exposure was recorded. The well-known tendency to interpret smaller regions as figure was noted in Exp. 2 whereas the results of Exp. 1 suggested equal probability of the percepts. Over-all results suggest that alternation is learned during the transient or "early" phase of perception, with some stimulus features and cultural factors influencing the figure-ground organization. During the stationary or late phase of perception the subject is well practiced and the alternating of interpretations becomes largely automatic.

On the variety of percepts associated with dichoptic viewing of dissimilar monocular stimuli

Upon dichoptic viewing of dissimilar patterns, several distinct perceptual states may be experienced over time. One state is exclusive monocular dominance, wherein the view of only one eye is seen in its entirety for some period of time. Another state is characterized by a mosaic-like college consisting of portions of the view of each eye. Two other states involve simultaneous perception of both monocular images in their entirety. In one of these states, the two monocular stimuli appear to be superimposed without depth (a phenomenon we shall term 'superimposition'). In the other state, the two monocular stimuli appear to be located at different depth planes (which we shall term 'transparency'). This paper documents the stimulus conditions favoring these various perceptual states. Exclusive monocular dominance occurs most often when the two eyes view dissimilar patterns with the same spatial-frequency content, particularly when both patterns consist of low spatial frequencies. Superimposition also occurs most often when the two eyes view the same spatial frequencies, but predominantly when those spatial frequencies are high. Transparency is favored when the spatial-frequency difference between the eyes is great, particularly when the view of one eye consists of high spatial-frequency information.

Conflicting figure--ground and depth information reduces moving phantom visibility

Moving phantom visibility was measured in two experiments where the global figure-ground and depth relations within phantom-inducing patterns were manipulated. The local inducing environment where the illusion occurred was identical for all patterns. Phantom visibility was significantly reduced when occlusion cues specified the phantom-inducing parts of a pattern as ground. These results suggest conflicting figure-ground and depth information interferes with the representation and perception of phantoms as figure regions.
