What is the speed to transparent and kinetic-boundary displays?

Integration of motion energy from overlapping random background noise increases perceived speed of coherently moving stimuli

The perception of visual motion can be profoundly influenced by visual context. To gain insight into how the visual system represents motion speed, we investigated how a background stimulus that did not move in a net direction influenced the perceived speed of a center stimulus. Visual stimuli were two overlapping random-dot patterns. The center stimulus moved coherently in a fixed direction, whereas the background stimulus moved randomly. We found that human subjects perceived the speed of the center stimulus to be significantly faster than its veridical speed when the background contained motion noise. Interestingly, the perceived speed was tuned to the noise level of the background. When the speed of the center stimulus was low, the highest perceived speed was reached when the background had a low level of motion noise. As the center speed increased, the peak perceived speed was reached at a progressively higher background noise level. The effect of speed overestimation required the center stimulus to overlap with the background. Increasing the background size within a certain range enhanced the effect, suggesting spatial integration. The speed overestimation was significantly reduced or abolished when the center stimulus and the background stimulus had different colors, or when they were placed at different depths. When the center- and background-stimuli were perceptually separable, speed overestimation was correlated with perceptual similarity between the center- and background-stimuli. These results suggest that integration of motion energy from random motion noise has a significant impact on speed perception. Our findings put new constraints on models regarding the neural basis of speed perception.

Differential processing: towards a unified model of direction and speed perception

In two experiments, we demonstrate a misperception of the velocity of a random-dot stimulus moving in the presence of a static line oriented obliquely to the direction of dot motion. As shown in previous studies, the perceived direction of the dots is shifted away from the orientation of the static line, with the size of the shift varying as a function of line orientation relative to dot direction (the statically-induced direction illusion, or 'SDI'). In addition, we report a novel effect - that perceived speed also varies as a function of relative line orientation, decreasing systematically as the angle is reduced from 90° to 0°. We propose that these illusions both stem from the differential processing of object-relative and non-object-relative component velocities, with the latter being perceptually underestimated with respect to the former by a constant ratio. Although previous proposals regarding the SDI have not allowed quantitative accounts, we present a unified formal model of perceived velocity (both direction and speed) with the magnitude of this ratio as the only free parameter. The model was successful in accounting for the angular repulsion of motion direction across line orientations, and in predicting the systematic decrease in perceived velocity as the line's angle was reduced. Although fitting for direction and speed produced different best-fit values of the ratio of underestimation of non-object-relative motion compared to object-relative motion (with the ratio for speed being larger than that for direction) this discrepancy may be due to differences in the psychophysical procedures for measuring direction and speed.

Neural mechanisms of speed perception: transparent motion

Visual motion on the macaque retina is processed by direction- and speed-selective neurons in extrastriate middle temporal cortex (MT). There is strong evidence for a link between the activity of these neurons and direction perception. However, there is conflicting evidence for a link between speed selectivity of MT neurons and speed perception. Here we study this relationship by using a strong perceptual illusion in speed perception: when two transparently superimposed dot patterns move in opposite directions, their apparent speed is much larger than the perceived speed of a single pattern moving at that physical speed. Moreover, the sensitivity for speed discrimination is reduced for such bidirectional patterns. We first confirmed these behavioral findings in human subjects and extended them to a monkey subject. Second, we determined speed tuning curves of MT neurons to bidirectional motion and compared these to speed tuning curves for unidirectional motion. Consistent with previous reports, the response to bidirectional motion was often reduced compared with unidirectional motion at the preferred speed. In addition, we found that tuning curves for bidirectional motion were shifted to lower preferred speeds. As a consequence, bidirectional motion of some speeds typically evoked larger responses than unidirectional motion. Third, we showed that these changes in neural responses could explain changes in speed perception with a simple labeled line decoder. These data provide new insight into the encoding of transparent motion patterns and provide support for the hypothesis that MT activity can be decoded for speed perception with a labeled line model.

Challenging the distribution shift: statically-induced direction illusion implicates differential processing of object-relative and non-object-relative motion

The direction illusion is the phenomenal exaggeration of the angle between the drift directions, typically, of two superimposed sets of random dots. The direction illusion is commonly attributed to mutual inhibition between direction-selective cell populations (distribution-shift model). A second explanation attributes the direction illusion to the differential processing of relative and non-relative motion components (differential processing model). Our first experiment demonstrates that, as predicted by the differential processing model, a static line can invoke a misperception of direction in a single set of dots--a phenomenon we refer to as the statically-induced direction illusion. In a second experiment, we find that the orientation of a static line can also influence the size of the conventional direction illusion. A third experiment eliminates the possibility that these results can be explained by the presence of motion streaks. While the results of these experiments are in agreement with the predictions made by the differential processing model, they pose serious problems for the distribution-shift account of shifts in perceived direction.

A model of motion transparency processing with local center-surround interactions and feedback

Motion transparency occurs when multiple coherent motions are perceived in one spatial location. Imagine, for instance, looking out of the window of a bus on a bright day, where the world outside the window is passing by and movements of passengers inside the bus are reflected in the window. The overlay of both motions at the window leads to motion transparency, which is challenging to process. Noisy and ambiguous motion signals can be reduced using a competition mechanism for all encoded motions in one spatial location. Such a competition, however, leads to the suppression of multiple peak responses that encode different motions, as only the strongest response tends to survive. As a solution, we suggest a local center-surround competition for population-encoded motion directions and speeds. Similar motions are supported, and dissimilar ones are separated, by representing them as multiple activations, which occurs in the case of motion transparency. Psychophysical findings, such as motion attraction and repulsion for motion transparency displays, can be explained by this local competition. Besides this local competition mechanism, we show that feedback signals improve the processing of motion transparency. A discrimination task for transparent versus opaque motion is simulated, where motion transparency is generated by superimposing large field motion patterns of either varying size or varying coherence of motion. The model's perceptual thresholds with and without feedback are calculated. We demonstrate that initially weak peak responses can be enhanced and stabilized through modulatory feedback signals from higher stages of processing.

The visual processing of motion-defined transparency

Our understanding of how the visual system processes motion transparency, the phenomenon by which multiple directions of motion are perceived to coexist in the same spatial region, has grown considerably in the past decade. There is compelling evidence that the process is driven by global-motion mechanisms. Consequently, although transparently moving surfaces are readily segmented over an extended space, the visual system cannot separate two motion signals that coexist in the same local region. A related issue is whether the visual system can detect transparently moving surfaces simultaneously or whether the component signals encounter a serial 'bottleneck' during their processing. Our initial results show that, at sufficiently short stimulus durations, observers cannot accurately detect two superimposed directions; yet they have no difficulty in detecting one pattern direction in noise, supporting the serial-bottleneck scenario. However, in a second experiment, the difference in performance between the two tasks disappears when the component patterns are segregated. This discrepancy between the processing of transparent and non-overlapping patterns may be a consequence of suppressed activity of global-motion mechanisms when the transparent surfaces are presented in the same depth plane. To test this explanation, we repeated our initial experiment while separating the motion components in depth. The marked improvement in performance leads us to conclude that transparent motion signals are represented simultaneously.

Luminance texture increases perceived speed

Previous psychophysical experiments have demonstrated that various factors can exert a considerable influence on the apparent velocity of visual stimuli. Here, we investigated the effects of superimposing static luminance texture on the apparent speed of a drifting grating. In Experiment 1, we demonstrate that superimposing static luminance texture on a drifting luminance modulated grating can produce an increase in perceived speed. This supports the hypothesis that texture changes perceived speed by providing landmarks to assess relative motion. In Experiment 2, we showed that contrary to static luminance texture, dynamic luminance texture did not increase perceived speed. This demonstrates that texture must provide reliable spatial landmarks in order to generate an increase in perceived speed. The results of Experiment 3 demonstrate that perceived speed depends on the size of the area covered by texture. This suggests that luminance texture and the motion stimulus interacted with each other over a limited spatial scale and that these local responses are then pooled to determine the speed of the motion stimulus. In Experiment 4, we showed that static texture contrast could produce a greater effect than motion stimulus contrast on perceived speed and that these effects could still be observed at brief presentation times. We discuss these findings in the context of models proposed to account for phenomena in the perception of speed.

Effect of signal intensity on perceived speed

The effect of signal intensity (proportion of dots moving in the same direction compared to noise dots that move in random directions) on perceived speed was investigated. It was found that increasing signal level decreased the perceived speed of the stimulus. This finding indicates that global-motion pooling processes play a role in the extraction of speed information. It is suggested that the amount of relative motion in the stimulus influences perceived speed, with perceived speed increasing with increasing relative motion. The results are discussed in relation to the notion that speed and direction are processed, at least in part, differently.

The efficiency of speed discrimination for coherent and transparent motion

Transparent motion involves the integration and segmentation of local motion signals. Previous research found a cost for processing transparent random dot motions relative to single coherent motions. However, this cost can be the result of the increased complexity of the transparent stimuli. We investigated this possibility by measuring the efficiency of transparent and coherent motions. Since efficiency normalises human performance to that of an ideal observer in the same task, performance can be compared fairly across tasks. Our task, identical in both transparent and coherent conditions, was to discriminate the fastest speed between two opposite motion directions. In two experiments where we varied dot density and speed, we confirmed the cost in human sensitivity for transparent motion but also found a cost for the ideal observer. The outcome was a consistent residual cost in efficiency for transparent motion. This result points to a processing limitation for transparent motion analogous to previously suggested inhibitory mechanisms between opposite directions of motion. Furthermore, we found that both transparent and coherent motion efficiencies decreased as dot density increased. This latter result stresses the importance of the correspondence problem and suggests that local motion signals are integrated over large areas.
