Boundary Completion in Illusory Contours: Interpolation or Extrapolation?

Detection method of micro and macro scale defects in silicon carbide castings

Aiming at challenges such as low efficiency, high missing rate, difficulty in identifying contour defects, and difficulty in extracting tiny defects, a defect detection method for extracting micro and macro scale defects is proposed in this paper. After preprocessing the image, contour detection is performed to identify the contours. Subsequently, a contour complementation algorithm is employed to complement the unclosed contours. Finally, the detection of micro scale defects is conducted based on the grayscale variation of the center of the micro scale defects. The experimental results show that compared with the traditional method, the proposed algorithm can accurately detect the bubble defects of different scales in silicon carbide castings and can identify the complex defects better.

Is Schizophrenia a Disorder of Consciousness? Experimental and Phenomenological Support for Anomalous Unconscious Processing

Decades ago, several authors have proposed that disorders in automatic processing lead to intrusive symptoms or abnormal contents in the consciousness of people with schizophrenia. However, since then, studies have mainly highlighted difficulties in patients' conscious experiencing and processing but rarely explored how unconscious and conscious mechanisms may interact in producing this experience. We report three lines of research, focusing on the processing of spatial frequencies, unpleasant information, and time-event structure that suggest that impairments occur at both the unconscious and conscious level. We argue that focusing on unconscious, physiological and automatic processing of information in patients, while contrasting that processing with conscious processing, is a first required step before understanding how distortions or other impairments emerge at the conscious level. We then indicate that the phenomenological tradition of psychiatry supports a similar claim and provides a theoretical framework helping to understand the relationship between the impairments and clinical symptoms. We base our argument on the presence of disorders in the minimal self in patients with schizophrenia. The minimal self is tacit and non-verbal and refers to the sense of bodily presence. We argue this sense is shaped by unconscious processes, whose alteration may thus affect the feeling of being a unique individual. This justifies a focus on unconscious mechanisms and a distinction from those associated with consciousness.

Visual completion from 2D cross-sections: Implications for visual theory and STEM education and practice

Accurately inferring three-dimensional (3D) structure from only a cross-section through that structure is not possible. However, many observers seem to be unaware of this fact. We present evidence for a 3D amodal completion process that may explain this phenomenon and provide new insights into how the perceptual system processes 3D structures. Across four experiments, observers viewed cross-sections of common objects and reported whether regions visible on the surface extended into the object. If they reported that the region extended, they were asked to indicate the orientation of extension or that the 3D shape was unknowable from the cross-section. Across Experiments 1, 2, and 3, participants frequently inferred 3D forms from surface views, showing a specific prior to report that regions in the cross-section extend straight back into the object, with little variance in orientation. In Experiment 3, we examined whether 3D visual inferences made from cross-sections are similar to other cases of amodal completion by examining how the inferences were influenced by observers’ knowledge of the objects. Finally, in Experiment 4, we demonstrate that these systematic visual inferences are unlikely to result from demand characteristics or response biases. We argue that these 3D visual inferences have been largely unrecognized by the perception community, and have implications for models of 3D visual completion and science education.

Decoding information about dynamically occluded objects in visual cortex

During dynamic occlusion, an object passes behind an occluding surface and then later reappears. Even when completely occluded from view, such objects are experienced as continuing to exist or persist behind the occluder even though they are no longer visible. The contents and neural basis of this persistent representation remain poorly understood. Questions remain as to whether there is information maintained about the object itself (i.e. its shape or identity) or non-object-specific information such as its position or velocity as it is tracked behind an occluder, as well as which areas of visual cortex represent such information. Recent studies have found that early visual cortex is activated by "invisible" objects during visual imagery and by unstimulated regions along the path of apparent motion, suggesting that some properties of dynamically occluded objects may also be neurally represented in early visual cortex. We applied functional magnetic resonance imaging in human subjects to examine representations within visual cortex during dynamic occlusion. For gradually occluded, but not for instantly disappearing objects, there was an increase in activity in early visual cortex (V1, V2, and V3). This activity was spatially-specific, corresponding to the occluded location in the visual field. However, the activity did not encode enough information about object identity to discriminate between different kinds of occluded objects (circles vs. stars) using MVPA. In contrast, object identity could be decoded in spatially-specific subregions of higher-order, topographically organized areas such as ventral, lateral, and temporal occipital areas (VO, LO, and TO) as well as the functionally defined LOC and hMT+. These results suggest that early visual cortex may only represent the dynamically occluded object's position or motion path, while later visual areas represent object-specific information.

Orientation Misperceptions Induced by Contrast Polarity: Comment on “Contrast Polarities Determine the Direction of Café Wall Tilts” by Akiyoshi Kitaoka, Baingio Pinna, and Gavin Brelstaff (2004)

According to Kitaoka et al (2004, Perception33 11–20), the Café Wall illusion can be reduced to misalignment effects produced locally by a large shape on a line passing nearby. I demonstrate here that the interacting units are edges and not whole shapes, and that the source of the illusion does not consist in a local tilt but in a tendency of the edges to join when they have the same contrast polarity.

Positional noise in Landolt-C stimuli reduces spatial resolution: a study with younger and older observers

In the present study we examined the effect of positional noise on spatial resolution in younger and older observers. We used a yes/no discrimination task in which observers indicated whether the size of two gaps in a Landolt-C-like contour was the same or not. The proportion of trials observers perceived one gap larger was measured when gaps-position was fixed (low positional noise) and random (high positional noise). Specifically, we compared, across conditions and groups, the values of threshold, lower and upper asymptote of the psychometric function. In the younger group, noise does not prevent detection of gap-size difference although sensitivity is lower, as revealed by higher threshold and lower upper asymptote, i.e., the proportion of responses "I see a larger gap" at the largest gap-size difference (asymptotic performance). In the older group detection is prevented, as revealed by threshold, lower and upper asymptote data. This may be because, at stimulus onset, high positional noise has associated coarse filter analysers averaging across the two gaps, which cannot be switched off.

Features of the selectivity for contrast polarity in contour integration revealed by a novel tilt illusion

We studied a novel illusion of tilt inside checkerboards due to the role of contrast polarity in contour integration. The preference for binding of oriented contours having same contrast polarity, over binding of opposite polarity ones (CP rule), has been used to explain several visual illusions. In three experiments we investigated how the binding effect is influenced by luminance contrast value, relatability of contour elements, and distance among them. Experiment 1 showed that the effect was indeed present only when the CP rule was satisfied, and found it to be stronger when the luminance contrast values of the elements are more similar. In experiment 2 the illusion was reported only with relatable edges, and its strength was modulated by the degree of relatability. The CP-rule effectiveness, thus, seems to depend on good continuation. The intensity of contrast polarity signals propagating from an oriented contour might be the less intense, the more its direction deviates from linearity. In experiment 3 we estimated the distance threshold and found it to be smaller than the one found for other illusions, arising with collinear fragments. This seems to show that the reach of the contrast polarity signal inside the association field of a contour unit is shorter along non-collinear orientations than along collinear ones.

The role of remote closure in the perception of occlusion at junctions and illusory contours

Abstract. Perceived occlusion at T-junctions or illusory contours at implicit T-junctions are often modelled by using edge information without surface context. We explored the effect of closure on perceived occlusion at T-junctions. Two vertical lines separated by a gap each had six abutting horizontal lines on opposite sides forming T-junctions. These lines were either closed or not closed into pairs at the stem ends of the Ts. In experiment 1, closed T-junction stems gave a much stronger sense of occlusion at the vertical lines than unclosed ones, even though closure information was remote from the putative occlusion and local T-junction information remained constant. When the outer two T-junctions were converted to L-junctions, perceived occlusion considerably diminished. The effect of closure on illusory-contour strength for stimuli like those of experiment 1 but with the vertical lines omitted was explored in experiment 2. The two sets of horizontal lines, separated by a gap, were either closed or not closed into pairs at their outer ends. Illusory-contour strength along the vertical alignments was much greater for closed pairs. Line terminations on both sides of the gap enhanced illusory-contour strength, but whether they were collinear or not had little effect.

The neural correlates of visuospatial perceptual and oculomotor extrapolation

The human visual system must perform complex visuospatial extrapolations (VSE) across space and time in order to extract shape and form from the retinal projection of a cluttered visual environment characterized by occluded surfaces and moving objects. Even if we exclude the temporal dimension, for instance when judging whether an extended finger is pointing towards one object or another, the mechanisms of VSE remain opaque. Here we investigated the neural correlates of VSE using functional magnetic resonance imaging in sixteen human observers while they judged the relative position of, or saccaded to, a (virtual) target defined by the extrapolated path of a pointer. Using whole brain and region of interest (ROI) analyses, we compared the brain activity evoked by these VSE tasks to similar control judgements or eye movements made to explicit (dot) targets that did not require extrapolation. The data show that activity in an occipitotemporal region that included the lateral occipital cortex (LOC) was significantly greater during VSE than during control tasks. A similar, though less pronounced, pattern was also evident in regions of the fronto-parietal cortex that included the frontal eye fields. However, none of the ROIs examined exhibited a significant interaction between target type (extrapolated/explicit) and response type (oculomotor/perceptual). These findings are consistent with a close association between visuoperceptual and oculomotor responses, and highlight a critical role for the LOC in the process of VSE.

Boundary completion, contrast polarity, and the perception of illusory tilt

What we perceive as a unitary object can be the result of integrative processes that generate a whole from parts. Although this issue of visual perception has been widely explored, recent experimental findings demonstrate that our knowledge is still incomplete. In particular, the question whether contour binding is affected by the sign of contrast (contrast polarity) across edges requires more in-depth examination. Here we show the effects of edge bindings that originate from the merging of laterally displaced edges with the same contrast polarity. We have studied a particular context in which such effects may emerge: a checkerboard with a series of alternated dark and light shapes superimposed on the corners of the squares. The phenomenal observations and experimental findings support the theories according to which boundary completions are originated by phenomena of edge propagation within a 'field of completion' (eg Shipley and Kellman, 2003 Perception 32 985-999) adjacent to an edge ending. Our findings conform to the Shipley and Kellman theory that boundary completion results from the interaction of edges as well as from edges and shapes lacking in oriented contours, the latter serving as 'receiving units', anchoring the paths of activations generated by oriented edges. We propose to integrate this theory with the hypothesis that interactions sensitive to the contrast sign generate conjunction paths of edges that alter their perceived orientation. Based on this perspective we propose an alternative account for the Café Wall illusion that can be extended to other phenomena of orientation misperception and to a Café Wall inversion effect that has not been observed previously.

Motion-induced illusory contours: priority of global aspects on motion perception

The present work deals with the perception of illusory surfaces assessed by the apparent motion of equal, parallel, and equidistant vertical stripes. Particularly, the influence of a reduction in length of one single stripe was studied. Two alternative perceptions were reported by participants: (a) the stripes seemed to move in a plastic (nonrigid) fashion, or (b) an apparent illusory rectangle was perceived in motion at the top of a complete row of stripes, which appeared to move in a rigid fashion in the opposite direction. In both perceptions, the single shorter stripe lost its identity and was absorbed by the global pattern of stripes in motion. The tendency to maintain identity seems to regard first of all the whole structure. It was found that these perceptions depended on the velocity of presentation of stripes and on the size of the shorter stripe.

Closure of salient regions determines search for a collinear target configuration

Grouping operations offer an effective mechanism by which to structure complex visual scenes. Among the various principles that support element integration, closure may be regarded as a main factor in shape extraction. In five experiments, we investigated the impact of grouping by closure on search for target configurations made up of collinearly arranged corner junctions. Systematic variations in the configuration of distractor elements were explored to investigate how the figural information of distractors interferes with target detection. The results showed no search interference for distractor configurations that were open forms. By contrast, distractors making up closed forms reduced the efficiency of search performance, indicating closure as a major contributor to form detection in multielement configurations. In conclusion, the effects reported may be considered to arise from mechanisms of unit formation that support the rapid extraction of salient regions to guide search.

Asymmetric priming effects in visual processing of occlusion patterns

In three experiments, we examined the effect of temporal context in amodal completion of partly occluded nontarget figures. In a primed same-different task, test pairs were preceded by a sequence of two primes, one of which was a single, the other a composite figure. Single figures reappeared in the composite ones, which also contained a square that could be viewed, alternatively, as an occluder or as yielding a mosaic fit to the other shape. To measure context influences between single and composite figures, both of which were nontargets, we studied their combined effect as primes on the test pairs of the same-different task, expecting that congruency between both primes should lead to a superadditive priming effect on the task. We found that single figures presented first provided facilitatory context for local and global occlusion as well as for mosaic interpretations of subsequently presented composite figures. These effects occurred only when the composite figure was presented briefly (50 msec). No superadditive facilitation occurred when composite figures were presented first and single figures followed them. The restriction of the effect to short presentations and its temporal asymmetry were taken as evidence that prior context biases possible occlusion interpretations during the process of completion, rather than afterward.
