Abstract
Nitrous oxide (N2O) decomposition is increasingly acknowledged as a viable strategy for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and addressing ozone depletion, aligning significantly with the UN's sustainable development goals (SDGs) and carbon neutrality objectives. To enhance efficiency in treatment and explore potential valorization, recent developments have introduced novel N2O reduction catalysts and pathways. Despite these advancements, a comprehensive and comparative review is absent. In this review, we undertake a thorough evaluation of N2O treatment technologies from a holistic perspective. First, we summarize and update the recent progress in thermal decomposition, direct catalytic decomposition (deN2O), and selective catalytic reduction of N2O. The scope extends to the catalytic activity of emerging catalysts, including nanostructured materials and single-atom catalysts. Furthermore, we present a detailed account of the mechanisms and applications of room-temperature techniques characterized by low energy consumption and sustainable merits, including photocatalytic and electrocatalytic N2O reduction. This article also underscores the extensive and effective utilization of N2O resources in chemical synthesis scenarios, providing potential avenues for future resource reuse. This review provides an accessible theoretical foundation and a panoramic vision for practical N2O emission controls.

Herein we disclose a catalytic synthesis of cycloalkanols
that
harnesses the potential of N2O as an oxygen transfer agent
onto sp3-hybridized carbons. The protocol is distinguished
by its mild conditions and wide substrate scope, thus offering an
opportunity to access carbocyclic compounds from simple precursors
even in an enantioselective manner. Preliminary mechanistic studies
suggest that the oxygen insertion event occurs at an alkylnickel species
and that N2O is the O transfer reagent.

Herein
we present the catalytic activation of N2O at
a BiI⇄BiIII redox platform. The activation
of such a kinetically inert molecule was achieved by the use of bismuthinidene
catalysts, aided by HBpin as reducing agent. The protocol features
remarkably mild conditions (25 °C, 1 bar N2O), together
with high turnover numbers (TON, up to 6700) and turnover frequencies
(TOF). Analysis of the elementary steps enabled structural characterization
of catalytically relevant intermediates after O-insertion, namely
a rare arylbismuth oxo dimer and a unique monomeric arylbismuth hydroxide.
This protocol represents a distinctive example of a main-group redox
cycling for the catalytic activation of N2O.

Abstract
Water vapor has generally been recognized as an inhibitor of catalysts in nitrous oxide (N2O) decomposition because it limits the lifetime of catalytic reactors. Oxygen produced in reactions also deactivates the catalytic performance of bulk surface catalysts. Herein, we propose a potential catalyst that is tolerant of water and oxygen in the process of N2O decomposition. By applying density functional theory calculations, we investigated the reaction mechanism of N2O decomposition into N2 and O2 catalyzed by oxotitanium(IV) porphyrin (TiO-por) with interfacially bonded water. The activation energies of reaction Path A and B are compared under thermal and photo-assisted conditions. The obtained calculation results show that the photo-assisted reaction in Path B is highly exothermic and proceeds smoothly with the low activation barrier of 27.57 kcal/mol at the rate determining step. The produced O2 is easily desorbed from the surface of the catalyst, requiring only 4.96 kcal/mol, indicating the suppression of catalyst deactivation. Therefore, TiO-por is theoretically proved to have the potential to be a desirable catalyst for N2O decomposition with photo-irradiation because of its low activation barrier, water resistance, and ease of regeneration.

Abstract
The one-electron reduction of nitrous oxide (N2 O) was achieved using strong Lewis acids E(C6 F5 )3 (E=B or Al) in combination with metallocenes. In the case of B(C6 F5 )3 , electron transfer to N2 O required a powerful reducing agent such as Cp*2 Co (Cp*=pentamethylcyclopentadienyl). In the presence of Al(C6 F5 )3 , on the other hand, the reactions could be performed with weaker reducing agents such as Cp*2 Fe or Cp2 Fe (Cp=cyclopentadienyl). The Lewis acid-mediated electron transfer from the metallocene to N2 O resulted in cleavage of the N-O bond, generating N2 and the oxyl radical anion [OE(C6 F5 )3 ]⋅- . The latter is highly reactive and engages in C-H activation reactions. It was possible to trap the radical by addition of the Gomberg dimer, which acts as a source of the trityl radical.

Abstract
Milstein et al. developed an efficient and mild method for CO oxidation by N2O to give CO2 and N2 catalyzed by a (PNN)Ru-H pincer complex. To gain mechanistic information on this catalytic transformation, the reaction mechanism has been studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It was found that the catalytic cycle for CO oxidation by N2O proceeds in three stages: N2O activation to form a (PNN)Ru-OH intermediate, CO insertion into the Ru-OH bond to form a (PNN)Ru-COOH intermediate and CO2 release from (PNN)Ru-COOH. In the CO2 release stage, CO2 is not released via a β-H elimination mechanism as proposed in experiments, instead it is released via a deprotonation mechanism. The calculations demonstrated that the Ru-H bond of the catalyst plays an important role in facilitating the activation of N2O, which is the rate-determining step for the whole catalytic cycle, and the non-innocent PNN ligand is very important for CO oxidation by N2O. Our theoretical results are consistent with the experimental observations and could help design highly efficient catalysts for N2O activation.

Abstract
The chemical activation of nitrous oxide (N2O) typically results in O-atom transfer and the extrusion of N2 gas. In contrast, reactions of N-trimethylsilyl (TMS)-substituted amides with N2O give inorganic or organic azides, with concomitant formation of silanols or siloxanes. N-TMS-substituted amides are also able to induce N-O bond cleavage in N2O-derived dialkylaminodiazotates, generating tetrazene salts. These results indicate the potential of silyl groups in devising transformations, in which N2O acts as an N-atom donor.

Abstract
The “masked” terminal nickel sulfide [K(18-crown-6)][LtBuNiII(S)] mediates the reduction of N2O by CO, via the thioperoxide complex [K(18-crown-6)][LtBuNiII(η2-SO)].
The thiohyponitrite ([SNNO]2–) complex, [K(18-crown-6)][LtBuNiII(κ2-SNNO)] (LtBu = {(2,6-iPr2C6H3)NC(tBu)}2CH), extrudes N2 under mild heating to yield [K(18-crown-6)][LtBuNiII(η2-SO)] (1), along with minor products [K(18-crown-6)][LtBuNiII(η2-OSSO)] (2) and [K(18-crown-6)][LtBuNiII(η2-S2)] (3). Subsequent reaction of 1 with carbon monoxide (CO) results in the formation of [K(18-crown-6)][LtBuNiII(η2-SCO)] (4), [K(18-crown-6)][LtBuNiII(S,O:κ2-SCO2)] (5), [K(18-crown-6)][LtBuNiII(κ2-CO3)] (6), carbonyl sulfide (COS) (7), and [K(18-crown-6)][LtBuNiII(S2CO)] (8). To rationalize the formation of these products we propose that 1 first reacts with CO to form [K(18-crown-6)][LtBuNiII(S)] (I) and CO2, via O-atom abstraction. Subsequently, complex I reacts with CO or CO2 to form 4 and 5, respectively. Similarly, the formation of complex 6 and COS can be rationalized by the reaction of 1 with CO2 to form a putative Ni(ii) monothiopercarbonate, [K(18-crown-6)][LtBuNiII(κ2-SOCO2)] (11). The Ni(ii) monothiopercarbonate subsequently transfers a S-atom to CO to form COS and [K(18-crown-6)][LtBuNiII(κ2-CO3)] (6). Finally, the formation of 8 can be rationalized by the reaction of COS with I. Critically, the observation of complexes 4 and 5 in the reaction mixture reveals the stepwise conversion of [K(18-crown-6)][LtBuNiII(κ2-SNNO)] to 1 and then I, which represents the formal reduction of N2O by CO.

Abstract

Both
CO and N2O are important, environmentally harmful
industrial gases. The reaction of CO and N2O to produce
CO2 and N2 has stimulated much research interest
aimed at degradation of these two gases in a single step. Herein,
we report an efficient CO oxidation by N2O catalyzed by
a (PNN)Ru–H pincer complex under mild conditions, even with
no added base. The reaction is proposed to proceed through a sequence
of O-atom transfer (OAT) from N2O to the Ru–H bond
to form a Ru–OH intermediate, followed by intramolecular OH
attack on an adjacent CO ligand, forming CO2 and N2. Thus, the Ru–H bond of the catalyst plays a central
role in facilitating the OAT from N2O to CO, providing
an efficient and novel protocol for CO oxidation.

Due to its significant contribution to stratospheric ozone depletion and its potent greenhouse effect, nitrous oxide has stimulated much research interest regarding its reactivity modes and its transformations, which can lead to its abatement. We report the homogeneously catalyzed reaction of nitrous oxide (N2O) with H2. The reaction is catalyzed by a PNP pincer ruthenium complex, generating efficiently only dinitrogen and water, under mild conditions, thus providing a green, mild methodology for removal of nitrous oxide. The reaction proceeds through a sequence of dihydrogen activation, "O"-atom transfer, and dehydration, in which metal-ligand cooperation plays a central role. This approach was further developed to catalytic O-transfer from N2O to Si-H bonds.

Abstract
The detailed mechanisms of the dehydrogenation of benzyl alcohol with N2O as the hydrogen acceptor catalyzed by the rhodium(i) carbene complex for the formation of the corresponding carboxylic acid or ester have been investigated via density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the M06 level of theory. Three cycles were considered for the formation of benzaldehyde, benzyl benzoate and benzoic acid. On the basis of the calculations, the rate-determining step for these three cycles is involved in N2O activation by the rhodium ammine hydride complex with an activation barrier of only 22.6 kcal mol-1, which is different from the previous mechanism proposed by Gianetti and co-workers, where the hydride is transferred from the Rh atom to the oxygen atom of N2O with a barrier of 30.5 kcal mol-1. In addition, the calculations also demonstrated that one more N2O is necessary to give benzoic acid, and the reaction can only take place under anhydrous conditions. Present calculations are in good agreement with the experimental observations and provide new insights into the dehydrogenation of benzyl alcohol with N2O as the hydrogen acceptor.

Abstract
The mechanisms for the oxidation of phenyl and hydride ligands of bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)hafnium derivatives (Cp* = η(5)-C5Me5) by nitrous oxide via selective oxygen atom transfer reactions have been systematically studied by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. On the basis of the calculations, we investigated the original mechanism proposed by Hillhouse and co-workers for the activation of N2O. The calculations showed that the complex with an initial O-coordination of N2O to the coordinatively unsaturated Hf center is not a local minimum. Then we proposed a new reaction mechanism to investigate how N2O is activated and why N2O selectively oxidize phenyl and hydride ligands of . Frontier molecular orbital theory analysis indicates that N2O is activated by nucleophilic attack by the phenyl or hydride ligand. Present calculations provide new insights into the activation of N2O involving the direct oxygen atom transfer from nitrous oxide to metal-ligand bonds instead of the generally observed oxygen abstraction reaction to generate metal-oxo species.

Abstract
The radiosensitization model of hypoxic tumor tissues based on the N2O/Br(-) mixture is described. The well-documented radiolysis of water in the presence of N2O and Br(-) ions at a low concentration supports this model. An aqueous solution saturated with N2O gas during the radiolysis generates OH radicals in a large extent. In N2O/Br- media at pH<9, Br2 is formed. Br2 hydrolyzes in an aqueous solution to form a very reactive hypobromous (HOBr) acid. Such process is described by the following chemical reaction: H2O + Br(-) + N2O + ionizing radiation (IR) --> HOBr + OH(-). In vivo formed HOBr as a long-lived product with a high biological activity induces the hypoxic tumor cell damage via many unique mechanisms. A local application or inhalation of an N2O-O2 mixture before or during the radiotherapy to enhance the saturation of tissues with N2O is a key prerequisite. Since the extracellular concentration of Br(-) ions is very low (0.02-0.05 mM), an oral or local application of NaBr should be used to shift the extracellular concentration of Br(-) ions to the mM region.

Abstract
Triazenes are valuable compounds in organic chemistry and numerous applications have been reported. Furthermore, triazenes have been investigated extensively as potential antitumor drugs. Here, we describe a new method for the synthesis of triazenes. The procedure involves a reagent which is rarely used in synthetic organic chemistry: nitrous oxide (N2 O, "laughing gas"). Nitrous oxide mediates the coupling of lithium amides and organomagnesium compounds while serving as a nitrogen donor. Despite the very inert character of nitrous oxide, the reactions can be performed in solution under mild conditions. A key advantage of the new procedure is the ability to access triazenes with alkynyl and alkenyl substituents. These compounds are difficult to prepare by conventional methods because the required starting materials are unstable. Some of the new alkynyltriazenes were found to display high cytotoxicity in in vitro tests on ovarian and breast cancer cell lines.

Abstract
The sterically demanding NHCs 1,3-di-tert-butylimidazolin-2-ylidene (1a), 1,3-di-tert-butyl-4,5-dimethylimidazolin-2-yildene (1b), and also the corresponding frustrated Lewis pair combinations 1a,b/B(C6F5)3 react readily with CO2 to form the NHC·CO2 (5a,b) and the NHC·CO2·B(C6F5)3 (9a,b) adducts, respectively. However, N2O activation and isolation of the NHC·N2O adduct (6) was only possible for NHC 1a. On heating, the NHC·N2O adduct 6 degrades to 1a, N2O, N2 and the urea derivative 7. Nevertheless, an NHC·N2O adduct of 1b was obtained with the FLP system 1b/B(C6F5)3. In contrast, for the FLP combination 1a/B(C6F5)3, N2O coordination appears to be slower than the self-deactivation. Hence, only the self-deactivation product 3 was observed under an N2O atmosphere. DFT calculations give insights into the CO2 and N2O activation process with 1a,b and 1a,b/B(C6F5)3.

Abstract
Five-monolayer (5ML) plasmid DNA films deposited on glass and tantalum substrates were exposed to Al Kα X-rays of 1.5 keV under gaseous nitrous oxide (N2O) at atmospheric pressure and temperature. Whereas the damage yields for DNA deposited on glass are due to soft X-rays, those arising from DNA on tantalum are due to both the interaction of low energy photoelectrons from the metal and X-rays. Then, the differences in the yields of damage on glass and tantalum substrates, essentially arises from interaction of essentially low-energy electrons (LEEs) with DNA molecules and the surrounding atmosphere. The G-values (i.e., the number of moles of product per Joule of energy absorbed) for DNA strand breaks induced by LEEs (GLEE) and the lower limit of G-values for soft X-ray photons (GXL) were calculated and the results compared to those from previous studies under atmospheric conditions and other ambient gases, such as N2 and O2. Under N2O, the G-values for loss of supercoiled DNA are 103±15 nmol/J for X-rays, and 737±110 nmol/J for LEEs. Compared to corresponding values in an O2 atmosphere, the effectiveness of X-rays to damage DNA in N2O is less, but the G value for LEEs in N2O is more than twice the corresponding value for an oxygenated environment. This result indicates a higher effectiveness for LEEs relative to N2 and O2 environments in causing SSB and DSB in an N2O environment. Thus, the previously observed radiosensitization of cells by N2O may not be only due to OH• radicals but also to the reaction of LEE with N2O molecules near DNA. The previous experiments with N2 and O2 and the present one demonstrate the possibility to investigate damage induced by LEEs to biomolecules under various type of surrounding atmospheres.

Abstract
Recently, capturing or transforming greenhouse gases, such as CO(2) and N(2)O, have attracted considerable interest from the perspective of environmental protection. In the present work, by studying CO(2) and N(2)O adsorption on pristine and calcium (Ca)-decorated fullerenes (C(60)) with density functional theory (DFT) methods, we have evaluated the potential application of this C(60)-based complex for the capture of CO(2) and transformation of N(2)O. The results indicate that the adsorptions of CO(2) and N(2)O molecules on the pristine C(60) are considerably weak accompanied by neglectable charge transfer. When C(60) is decorated with Ca atoms, however, it is found that CO(2) and N(2)O adsorptions on the C(60) are greatly enhanced. Up to five CO(2) molecules can be adsorbed on the CaC(60) system due to the electrostatic interaction. For N(2)O molecule, it is first molecularly adsorbed on the Ca atom with the adsorption energy of -0.534 eV, followed by the N(2) formation with a low barrier and high exothermicity. Moreover, when four Ca atoms are decorated on the surface of C(60), the maximum number of the adsorbed CO(2) molecules is 16. Our results might be useful not only to widen the potential applications of fullerene but also to provide an effective method to capture or transform greenhouse gases.

Abstract
Nitrous oxide (N(2)O), a widespread greenhouse gas, is a thermodynamically potent and environmentally green oxidant that is an attractive target for activation by metal centers. However, N(2)O remains underutilized owing to its high kinetic stability, and the poor ligand properties of this molecule have made well-characterized metal-N(2)O complexes a rarity. We now report a vanadium-pyrrolide system that reversibly binds N(2)O at room temperature and provide the first single-crystal X-ray structure of such a complex. Further characterization by vibrational spectroscopy and DFT calculations strongly favor assignment as a linear, N-bound metal-N(2)O complex.
