Generic and Automated Data Evaluation in Analytical Measurement

In the past year, automation has become more and more important in the field of elemental and structural chemical analysis to reduce the high degree of manual operation and processing time as well as human errors. Thus, a high number of data points are generated, which requires fast and automated data evaluation. To handle the preprocessed export data from different analytical devices with software from various vendors offering a standardized solution without any programming knowledge should be preferred. In modern laboratories, multiple users will use this software on multiple personal computers with different operating systems (e.g., Windows, Macintosh, Linux). Also, mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets have gained growing importance. The developed software, Project Analytical Data Evaluation (ADE), is implemented as a web application. To transmit the preevaluated data from the device software to the Project ADE, the exported XML report files are detected and the included data are imported into the entities database using the Data Upload software. Different calculation types of a sample within one measurement series (e.g., method validation) are identified using information tags inside the sample name. The results are presented in tables and diagrams on different information levels (general, detailed for one analyte or sample).

Developing a Methodology for Determination of Elemental Composition of Shielding Materials

Radiation transport simulation models can provide estimations of radiation effects such as detector response and detection capabilities. The objective of this research was to develop a methodology for quick, efficient, and effective determination of the composition of shielding materials to be used in radiation transport models. A C++ code, MatFit, was developed that used the concept of densitometry and the iterative method developed for the Spectrum Analysis by Neutron Detectors II (SAND II) computer program to estimate the elemental composition of shielding materials. These results were compared to previous neutron activation analysis (NAA) on the same samples. It was determined that densitometry provided an elemental approximation that yielded an attenuation rate within 10% of that found through NAA but requires much fewer resources, as well as less time. From this research, it is recommended that the developed method and C++ program be used when constructing models for detector response.

[Determination of Al, Be, Cd, Co, Cr, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se and Tl in whole blood by atomic absorption spectrometry without preliminary sample digestion]

Methods of whole blood trace element determination by Graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (in the variant of Zeeman's modulation polarization spectrometry) have been proposed. They do not require preliminary sample digestion. Furnace programs, modifiers and blood dilution factors were optimized. Seronorm™ human whole blood reference materials were used for validation. Dynamic ranges (for undiluted blood samples) were: Al 8 ¸ 210 мg/L; Be 0.3 ¸ 50 мg/L; Cd 0.2 ¸ 75 мg/L; Сo 5 ¸ 350 мg/L; Cr 10 ¸ 100 мg/L; Mn 6 ¸ 250 мg/L; Ni 10 ¸ 350 мg/L; Pb 3 ¸ 240 мg/L; Se 10 ¸ 500 мg/L; Tl 2 ¸ 600 мg/L. Precision (RSD) for the middle of dynamic range ranged from 5% for Mn to 11 for Se.

Analysis of the absorption layer of CIGS solar cell by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was applied for the elemental analysis of the thin copper indium gallium diselenide (CuIn(1-x)Ga(x)Se(2) [CIGS]) absorption layer deposited on Mo-coated soda-lime glass by the co-evaporation technique. The optimal laser and detection parameters for LIBS measurement of the CIGS absorption layer (1.23 μm) were investigated. The calibration results of Ga/In ratio with respect to the concentration ratios measured by x-ray fluorescence and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy showed good linearity.

Extinction coefficient for red-shifted chlorophylls: chlorophyll d and chlorophyll f

Both chlorophyll f and chlorophyll d are red-shifted chlorophylls in oxygenic photosynthetic organisms, which extend photon absorbance into the near infrared region. This expands the range of light that can be used to drive photosynthesis. Quantitative determination of chlorophylls is a crucial step in the investigation of chlorophyll-photosynthetic reactions in the field of photobiology and photochemistry. No methods have yet been worked out for the quantitative determination of chlorophyll f. There is also no method available for the precise quantitative determination of chlorophyll d although it was discovered in 1943. In order to obtain the extinction coefficients (ε) of chlorophyll f and chlorophyll d, the concentrations of chlorophylls were determined by Inductive Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry according to the fact that each chlorophyll molecule contains one magnesium (Mg) atom. Molar extinction coefficient ε(chl f) is 71.11×10(3)Lmol(-1)A(707nm)cm(-1) and ε(chl d) is 63.68×10(3)Lmol(-1)A(697nm)cm(-1) in 100% methanol. Trends in Sorption Preconcentration Combined with Noble Metal Determination

Nowadays much attention is being paid to the determination of trace amounts of noble metals in geological, industrial, biological and environmental samples. The most promising techniques, such as inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) are characterized by high sensitivity. However, the accurate determination of trace noble metals has been limited by numerous interferences generated from the presence of matrix elements. To decrease, or eliminate, these interferences, the sorption preconcentration of noble metals is often used prior to their instrumental detection. A great number of hyphenated methods of noble metal determination using sorption preconcentration have been developed. This review describes the basic types of available sorbents, preconcentration procedures and preparations of the sorbent to the subsequent determination of noble metals. The specific features of instrumental techniques and examples of ETAAS, FAAS, ICP-AES, ICP-MS determinations after the sorption preconcentration of noble metals are considered. The references cited here were selected mostly from the period 1996 - 2006.
