Advances in gold catalyzed synthesis of quinoid heteroaryls

Experimental and Theoretical Investigation of Ion Pairing in Gold(III) Catalysts

The ion pairing structure of the possible species present in solution during the gold(III)-catalyzed hydration of alkynes: [(ppy)Au(NHC)Y]X2 and [(ppy)Au(NHC)X]X [ppy = 2-phenylpyridine, NHC = NHCiPr = 1,3-bis(2,6-di-isopropylphenyl)-imidazol-2-ylidene; NHC = NHCmes = 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-imidazol-2-ylidene X = Cl-, BF4-, OTf-; Y = H2O and 3-hexyne] are determined. The nuclear overhauser effect nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experimental measurements integrated with a theoretical description of the system (full optimization of different ion pairs and calculation of the Coulomb potential surface) indicate that the preferential position of the counterion is tunable through the choice of the ancillary ligands (NHCiPr, NHCmes, ppy, and Y) in [(ppy)Au(NHC)(3-hexyne)]X2 activated complexes that undergo nucleophilic attack. The counterion can approach near NHC, pyridine ring of ppy, and gold atom. From these positions, the anion can act as a template, holding water in the right position for the outer-sphere attack, as observed in gold(I) catalysts.

Monitoring of the Pre-Equilibrium Step in the Alkyne Hydration Reaction Catalyzed by Au(III) Complexes: A Computational Study Based on Experimental Evidences

The coordination ability of the [(ppy)Au(IPr)]²⁺ fragment [ppy = 2-phenylpyridine, IPr = 1,3-bis(2,6-di-isopropylphenyl)-imidazol-2-ylidene] towards different anionic and neutral X ligands (X = Cl⁻, BF₄⁻, OTf⁻, H₂O, 2-butyne, 3-hexyne) commonly involved in the crucial pre-equilibrium step of the alkyne hydration reaction is computationally investigated to shed light on unexpected experimental observations on its catalytic activity. Experiment reveals that BF₄⁻ and OTf⁻ have very similar coordination ability towards [(ppy)Au(IPr)]²⁺ and slightly less than water, whereas the alkyne complex could not be observed in solution at least at the NMR sensitivity. Due to the steric hindrance/dispersion interaction balance between X and IPr, the [(ppy)Au(IPr)]²⁺ fragment is computationally found to be much less selective than a model [(ppy)Au(NHC)]²⁺ (NHC = 1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene) fragment towards the different ligands, in particular OTf⁻ and BF₄⁻, in agreement with experiment. Effect of the ancillary ligand substitution demonstrates that the coordination ability of Au(III) is quantitatively strongly affected by the nature of the ligands (even more than the net charge of the complex) and that all the investigated gold fragments coordinate to alkynes more strongly than H₂O. Remarkably, a stabilization of the water-coordinating species with respect to the alkyne-coordinating one can only be achieved within a microsolvation model, which reconciles theory with experiment. All the results reported here suggest that both the Au(III) fragment coordination ability and its proper computational modelling in the experimental conditions are fundamental issues for the design of efficient catalysts.

Regiocontrolled synthesis of 2,4,6-triarylpyridines from methyl ketones, electron-deficient acetylenes and ammonium acetate

A novel one-pot two-step approach for the synthesis of 2,4,6-triarylpyridines via t-BuOK/DMSO-promoted C-vinylation of a variety of methyl ketones with electron-deficient acetylenes (alkynones) followed by a cyclization of the in situ generated unsaturated 1,5-dicarbonyl species with ammonium acetate has been developed. This approach possesses competitive advantages such as high regioselectivity, available starting materials and the absence of transition-metal catalysts, oxidants and undesirable byproducts. A wide synthetic utility of the developed approach was demonstrated by the synthesis of trisubstituted, tetrasubstituted and fused pyridines.

Gold-Catalyzed Intermolecular Alkyne Hydrofunctionalizations—Mechanistic Insights

An overview of the current state of mechanistic understanding of gold-catalyzed intermolecular alkyne hydrofunctionalization reactions is presented. Moving from the analysis of the main features of the by-now-generally accepted reaction mechanism, studies and evidences pointing out the mechanistic peculiarities of these reactions using different nucleophiles HNu that add to the alkyne triple bond are presented and discussed. The effects of the nature of the employed alkyne substrate and of the gold catalyst (employed ligands, counteranions, gold oxidation state), of additional additives and of the reaction conditions are also considered. Aim of this work is to provide the reader with a detailed mechanistic knowledge of this important reaction class, which will be invaluable for rapidly developing and optimizing synthetic protocols involving a gold-catalyzed alkyne hydrofunctionalization as a reaction step.

Gold-Catalyzed Addition of Carboxylic Acids to Alkynes and Allenes: Valuable Tools for Organic Synthesis

In this contribution, the application of gold-based catalysts in the hydrofunctionalization reactions of alkynes and allenes with carboxylic acids is comprehensively reviewed. Both intra- and intermolecular processes, leading respectively to lactones and linear unsaturated esters, are covered. In addition, cascade transformations involving the initial cycloisomerization of an alkynoic acid are also discussed.

Hydration of alkynes catalyzed by [Au(X)(L)(ppy)]X in the green solvent γ-valerolactone under acid-free conditions: the importance of the pre-equilibrium step

Stable and robust [Au(H₂O)(NHC)(ppy)](X)₂ successfully catalyses the hydration of alkynes in GVL, under acid-free conditions. DFT calculation and NMR measurements suggest that pre-equilibrium is the key step of the whole process.

A.E.Favorskii’s scientific legacy in modern organic chemistry: prototropic acetylene – allene isomerization and the acetylene zipper reaction

Alexei Evgrafovich Favorskii was an outstanding organic chemist who left a great scientific legacy as a result of long time and fruitful work. Most of the theoretically and practically important discoveries of A.E.Favorskii were made in the chemistry of acetylene and its derivatives. Nowadays, the reactions discovered by him, which include acetylene – allene isomerization, the Favorskii and retro-Favorskii reactions, the Favorskii rearrangement and the vinylation reaction, are widely used in industry and in laboratory synthesis. This review summarizes the main scientific achievements of A.E.Favorskii, as well as their development in modern organic chemistry. Much consideration is given to acetylene – allene isomerization as a convenient method for the synthesis of methyl-substituted acetylenes and to the acetylene zipper reaction as a synthetic tool for obtaining terminal acetylenes. The review presents examples of the application of these reactions in modern organic synthesis of complex molecules, including natural compounds and their analogues.

Prevalence of non-aromatic carbonaceous molecules in the inner regions of circumstellar envelopes

Evolved stars are a foundry of chemical complexity, gas and dust that provides the building blocks of planets and life, and dust nucleation first occurs in their photosphere. Despite their importance, the circumstellar regions enveloping these stars remain hidden to many observations, thus dust formation processes are still poorly understood. Laboratory astrophysics provides complementary routes to unveil these chemical processes, but most experiments rely on combustion or plasma decomposition of molecular precursors under physical conditions far removed from those in space. We have built an ultra-high vacuum machine combining atomic gas aggregation with advanced in-situ characterization techniques to reproduce and characterize the bottom-up dust formation process. We show that carbonaceous dust analogues formed from low-pressure gas-phase condensation of C atoms in a hydrogen atmosphere, in a C/H2 ratio similar to that reported for evolved stars, leads to the formation of amorphous C nanograins and aliphatic C-clusters. Aromatic species or fullerenes do not form effectively under these conditions, raising implications for the revision of the chemical mechanisms taking place in circumstellar envelopes.

Atypical catalytic function of embedded gold nanoparticles by controlling structural features of polymer particle in alcohol-rich solvents

This work demonstrates an in situ approach to incorporate multiple gold nanoparticles (NPs) within a functional-group-free poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) particle and examine their catalytic activity in carbon-carbon forming reactions in pure alcohol and alcohol-rich aqueous solvents under ambient aerobic conditions. The alcohol-rich solvent environments eliminated the cononsolvency effect of the polymer particle template to maintain a fully swollen structure while providing great stability to the embedded gold NPs. In addition, the dispersion of the composites in alcohol solvents efficiently reduced the surface adsorbed stabilizing agent around the embedded gold NPs. Given their high stability and readily accessible surfaces with a minimal physical barrier, these macromolecule-derived composite particles as quasi-homogeneous catalysts exhibited unexpectedly high activity in homocoupling reactions to form C-C bonds. The increased mass transfer capability for reactants and products in pure alcohol and alcohol-rich solvents was also responsible for the highly improved yields in the coupling reactions. Furthermore, the composite particles exhibited great selectivity to solely form targeted compounds without any side products and showed the robustness to be recycled multiple times without losing their catalytic activity in pure alcohol solvent environments. By simply controlling the structural feature of the polymer particle matrix with alcohol solvents, the embedded gold NPs exhibited atypical catalytic activity and selectivity as well as recyclability in C-C bond forming reactions.

Cyclization of ortho-ethynylbiaryls as an emerging versatile tool for the construction of polycyclic arenes

Cyclization and cycloisomerization of ortho-aryl(ethynyl)arenes provide an easy direct access to fused polycyclic aromatic carbo- and heterocycles. This methodology has demonstrated an impressive progress in the recent years. The goal of this review is to give a comprehensive outlook on the synthetic potential, scope, limitations, and mechanistic aspects of the cyclization reactions. The material is arranged according to the activation method that can be used to induce cyclization: pyrolysis, metal catalysis, electrophilic activation, radical induction, base catalysis. Particular attention is paid to the specificity of ortho-ethynylbiaryls with a heterocyclic central core.
