Magnesium cations as templates for the self-assembly of supramolecular luminescent {Mg@[B18φ34-35]}-clusters

Solvothermal reaction of magnesium nitrate and boron oxide in N,N-dimethylformamide produced a number of particularly complex supramolecular magnesium borates. Five topologically different types of negatively charged {Mg@[B18φ34-35]}-clusters, φ = O, OH, were observed with the magnesium cation as a core and octadecaborate anions as shells. The clusters assemble via common borate polyhedra forming 1D chains, a 2D mesoporous layer, and 3D mesoporous frameworks with an effective channel width of up to 16 Å. Topological analysis of the clusters in combination with the modular crystallography approach indicates that numerous new functional materials can be obtained by varying their assembly mode. At least one compound containing such clusters exhibits a very strong luminescence.

Synthesis and Thermal Studies of Two Phosphonium Tetrahydroxidohexaoxidopentaborate(1-) Salts: Single-Crystal XRD Characterization of [iPrPPh3][B5O6(OH)4]·3.5H2O and [MePPh3][B5O6(OH)4]·B(OH)3·0.5H2O

Two substituted phosphonium tetrahydoxidohexaoxidopentaborate(1-) salts, [iPrPPh3][B5O6(OH)4]·3.5H2O (1) and [MePPh3][B5O6(OH)4]·B(OH)3·0.5H2O (2), were prepared by templated self-assembly processes with good yields by crystallization from basic methanolic aqueous solutions primed with B(OH)3 and the appropriate phosphonium cation. Salts 1 and 2 were characterized by spectroscopic (NMR and IR) and thermal (TGA/DSC) analysis. Salts 1 and 2 were thermally decomposed in air at 800 °C to glassy solids via the anhydrous phosphonium polyborates that are formed at lower temperatures (<300 °C). BET analysis of the anhydrous and pyrolysed materials indicated they were non-porous with surface areas of 0.2-2.75 m2/g. Rhe recrystallization of 1 and 2 from aqueous solution afforded crystals suitable for single-crystal XRD analyses. The structure of 1 comprises alternating cationic/anionic layers with the H2O/pentaborate(1-) planes held together by H-bonds. The cationic planes have offset face-to-face (off) and vertex-to-face (vf) aromatic ring interactions with the iPr groups oriented towards the pentaborate(1-)/H2O layers. The anionic lattice in 2 is expanded by the inclusion of B(OH)3 molecules to accommodate the large cations; this results in the formation of a stacked pentaborate(1-)/B(OH)3 structure with channels occupied by the cations. The cations within the channels have vf, ef (edge-to-face), and off phenyl embraces. Both H-bonding and phenyl embrace interactions are important in stabilizing these two solid-state structures.

Effects of Boron-Containing Compounds on Liposoluble Hormone Functions

Boron-containing compounds (BCC), particularly boronic acids and derivatives, are being increasingly tested as diagnostic and therapeutic agents. Some effects of BCC involve phenomena linked to the action of steroid or thyroid hormones; among these, are the effects on muscle mass or basal metabolism. Additionally, some toxicology reports on mammals, including humans, sound an alert concerning damage to several systems, among which are the negative effects on the induction of male infertility. Systemic and local mechanisms to explain changes in metabolism and impaired fertility were collected and presented. Then, we presented the putative pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic mechanisms involved and demonstrated in these events. In addition, it is proposed that there are adducts of some oxygenated BCC with cis-diols in fructose, an essential source of energy for sperm–cell motility, an uncoupling of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and its ligands, and the modulation of the DNA synthetic rate. These effects share the reactivity of boron-containing compounds on the cis-diols of key molecules. Moreover, data reporting no DNA damage after BCC administration are included. Further studies are required to support the clear role of BCC through these events to disrupt metabolism or fertility in mammals. If such phenomena are confirmed and elucidated, an advance could be useful to design strategies for avoiding BCC toxicity after BCC administration, and possibly for designing metabolism regulators and contraceptive drugs, among other purposes. Boronic derivatives and carboranes have been proposed and studied in this field.

Effect of Nature of Substituents on Coordination Properties of Mono- and Disubstituted Derivatives of Boron Cluster Anions [BnHn]2– (n = 10, 12) and Carboranes with exo-Polyhedral B–X Bonds (X = N, O, S, Hal)

This review systematizes data on the coordination ability of mono- and disubstituted derivatives of boron cluster anions and carboranes in complexation with transition metals. Boron clusters anions [BnHn]2–, monocarborane anions [CBnHn–1]–, and dicarboranes [C2BnHn–2] (with non-functionalized carbon atoms) (n = 10, 12) containing the B–X exo-polyhedral bonds (X = N, O, S, Hal) are discussed. Synthesis and structural features of complexes known to date are described. The effect of complexing metal and substituent attached to the boron cage on the composition and structures of the final complexes is analyzed. It has been established that substituted derivatives of boron cluster anions and carboranes can act as both ligands and counterions. A complexing agent can coordinate substituted derivatives of the boron cluster anions due to three-center two-electron 3c2e MHB bonds, by the substituent functional groups, or a mixed type of coordination can be realized, through the BH groups of the boron cage and the substituent. As for B-substituted carboranes, complexes with coordinated substituents or salts with non-coordinated carborane derivatives have been isolated; compounds with MHB bonding are not characteristic of carboranes.

A New Approach for the Synthesis of Powder Zinc Oxide and Zinc Borates with Desired Properties

Zinc borates are widely used in industry due to their thermal stability as a flame retardant in the production of plastics, rubber, and other polymer compositions. We have developed a simple and effective approach for the synthesis of zinc borate powders with desired properties, including desired particle size, low bulk density, high reactivity, etc. Zinc borates were prepared by the thermal treatment of a concentrated water–carbohydrate solution of a zinc salt until finely dispersed ZnO was formed, followed by its hydrothermal treatment at 90–300 °C as part of a suspension based on a hot aqueous solution of H3BO3. According to X-ray powder diffraction, IR spectroscopy, and TG–DSC data, depending on the temperature of hydrothermal treatment, a decrease in the water content in the structure of synthesized zinc borate particles is observed. TEM and SEM data indicate the formation of isometrically shaped zinc borate particles in the nanometer range during hydrothermal treatment above 250 °C. Varying the temperature of the hydrothermal treatment affects the average size and fineness of the structure of the zinc borate particles.

Ba3 (BO3 )(CO3 )F: The First Borate Carbonate Fluoride Synthesized by the High-Temperature Solution Method

In contrast to the well-investigated halogen-containing borates and carbonates, very few halogen-containing borate carbonate compounds have been reported. Specifically, no example of borate carbonate fluoride has been synthesized successfully until now. Herein, the planar π-conjugated units [BO₃ ]^3- and [CO₃ ]^2- and the F^- ions are introduced simultaneously into one crystal structure resulting in the first borate carbonate fluoride, Ba₃ (BO₃ )(CO₃ )F, by the high-temperature solution method in the atmosphere. Its structure features a hexagonal channel formed by the [BO₃ ]^3- and [CO₃ ]^2- units with the [F₃ Ba₈ ]¹³⁺ trimers filled in the channel. Various characterizations including single crystal- and powder-XRD, EDX, IR, UV-vis-NIR, and TG-DSC, together with the first principles calculation have been carried out to verify the structure and fully understand the structure-property relationships.

Crystal structure, theoretical studies and luminescent properties of a new borate Na3GdB8O15 with one-dimensional broad-banded anionic framework

Inorganic borate compounds exhibit significant diversity in their structure types, which are associated with interesting optical and magnetic properties. In our work, a new rare-earth polyborate Na₃GdB₈O₁₅ was prepared with an infinite one-dimensional (1D) broad-banded framework of [B₈O₁₅]_∞ running along the a-axis, in which large Gd³⁺ and Na⁺ ions reside to ensure cohesion and neutrality of the structure. The basic fundamental building block (FBB) of [B₈O₁₅]_∞ is B₁₆O₃₂, which is composed of five BO₃ and three BO₄ groups and can be written as 5Δ3□: 〈2Δ□〉-〈Δ2□〉〈2Δ□〉. First principle studies reveal that Na₃GdB₈O₁₅ is an indirect bandgap semiconductor and the optical absorption at 280 nm originates from the O^2-→ Gd³⁺ transition. Solid solutions of Na₃Gd_1-xCe_xB₈O₁₅ and Na₃Gd_0.98-yY_yCe_0.02B₈O₁₅ were prepared and exhibited a bluish violet emissive luminescence by near-UV excitation due to the 5d¹→ 4f¹ transition of Ce³⁺. Substitution of Gd³⁺ by Y³⁺ enhanced the luminescence efficiency and significantly improved the thermal stability. At 423 K, the luminescence intensity of Na₃Gd_0.58Y_0.4Ce_0.02B₈O₁₅ remained 77% of that at 298 K. We hypothesize that Na₃GdB₈O₁₅ is a potential inorganic luminescent host matrix.

Synthesis, characterization and crystal structure of a new mixed alkali and alkaline-earth metal borate Rb9Ba24(BO3)19

Rb₉Ba₂₄(BO₃)₁₉ features an intricate 3D Ba–O framework with three types of infinite channels where the Rb⁺ cations and isolated BO₃ units are located.

Pentaborate(1-) Salts and a Tetraborate(2-) Salt Derived from C2- or C3-Linked Bis(alkylammonium) Dications: Synthesis, Characterization, and Structural (XRD) Studies

The synthesis of a number of pentaborate(1-) salts from cations arising from N-substituted α,α-, α,β-, and α,γ-diaminoalkanes has been attempted in aqueous solution from B(OH)₃ and the appropriate diammine in a 10:1 ratio. Despite relatively mild work-up conditions the pentaborate(1-) salts prepared were not always as anticipated and the following compounds were isolated in good yield: [Me₂NH(CH₂)₂NHMe₂][B₅O₆(OH)₄]₂ (1), [Et₂NH(CH₂)₂NHEt₂][B₅O₆(OH)₄]₂ (2), [Et₂NH₂][B₅O₆(OH)₄] (3), [Me₂NH₂][B₅O₆(OH)₄] (4), [Me₂NH(CH₂)₃NHMe₂][B₅O₆(OH)₄]₂ (5), [Et₂NH(CH₂)₃NHEt₂][B₅O₆(OH)₄]₂ (6), [Me₃NCH₂CH=CH₂][B₅O₆(OH)₄] (7), and [Me₃N(CH₂)₃NMe₃] [B₅O₆(OH)₄]₂^.0.5H₂O (8). The tetraborate(2-) salt, [Me₃N(CH₂)₂NMe₃][B₄O₅(OH)₄]^.2B(OH)₃^.2H₂O (9) was obtained in moderate yield (41%) from a 3:1 reaction of B(OH)₃ with [Me₃N(CH₂)₂NMe₃](OH)₂. All compounds were characterized by spectroscopy (¹H, ¹¹B, ¹³C NMR and IR) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). BET analysis on materials derived thermally from selected samples (1, 2, 6, 7) all had porosities of < 1 m²/g, demonstrating that they were non-porous. Single-crystal XRD structures were obtained for 2, 3, 7, 8 and 9 and all contain extensive H-bonded polyborate lattices.

K2[B4O5(OH)4]·H2O and K2[B4O5(OH)4]: two new hydrated potassium borates with isolated [B4O5(OH)4]2− units and different structural frameworks
