Monitoring settling of anaerobic digestates using low-field MRI profiling and NMR relaxometry measurements

Dewatering of anaerobic digestate from red meat processing was assessed using low field MRI profiling and NMR relaxometry. Samples were flocculated using a cationic flocculant (EM640CT) at dosing range (0 to 1.6% v/v) and monitored during the initial 30 min of settling via MRI profiling to assess changes in water fraction, settling time and initial settling velocity. The profiles showed decreasing settling time and increasing initial settling velocity with increased dosing, while sample porosity was observed to increase up to the optimal dosing point (0.8% v/v). Significant increases in sample variability were observed past this point due to flocculant overdosing. The samples were then analysed in terms of turbidity and NMR relaxometry. Increasing flocculant concentration caused turbidity to decrease from 210 to 13 NTU. The relaxation rate of free water showed a strong positive correlation with turbidity. T2 peaks observed before overdosing could be assigned to different water structures (free, interstitial, vicinal and hydration). An additional T2 population emerged in the T2 distributions at the optimal dosing point. Multivariate exploratory data analysis (MEDA) showed that this T2 population from the solids layer was strongly correlated with the total solids layer height and turbidity of the watery layer. This T2 peak formation may therefore be used to study opaque flocculated solids to monitor for water structures associated with flocculant overdosing. Further studies using this technique will aim to assess the potential of low field T2 relaxometry monitoring inline before mechanical dewatering, to monitor optimal flocculant dosing during continuous operations on systems with high solids concentration.

Effect of alkaline pre-treatment on hydrolysis rate and methane production during anaerobic digestion of paunch solid waste

Paunch is comprised of the partially digested feed contained in cattle or sheep and contributes 20-50% of organic waste produced at red meat processing facilities. Anaerobic digestion has been identified as a promising technology for paunch treatment, however treatment times can be long and when combined with the moderate degradability of paunch this results in high treatment costs that need to be improved. Pre-treatment was investigated as a strategy to improve AD of paunch, alkaline treatment (NaOH or KOH) was selected due to the high lignin content. A range of alkaline loadings (1-20 g 100gTS-1) were tested with an equivalent hydroxide molar concentration of 9-250 mM [OH-]. Alkaline pre-treatment improved both the hydrolysis rate and the overall degradability of paunch solid by up to 4.4 times and 60%, respectively. The enhanced hydrolysis rate and methane yield was correlated to changes in material composition during pre-treatment. While alkaline concentration was an important factor, there were no significant improvements at alkaline concentrations above 12 g 100gTS-1 (150 mM [OH-]).

Biosolids-derived fertilisers: A review of challenges and opportunities

Soil application of biosolids as an organic fertiliser continues to be a cost-effective way to beneficially utilise its carbon and nutrient contents to maintain soil fertility. However, ongoing concerns over microplastics and persistent organic contaminants means that land-application of biosolids has come under increased scrutiny. To identify a way forward for the ongoing future use of biosolids-derived fertilisers in agriculture, the current work presents a critical review of: (1) contaminants of concern in biosolids and how regulatory approaches can address these to enable on-going beneficial reuse, (2) nutrient contents and bioavailability in biosolids to understand agronomic potential, (3) developments in extractive technologies to preserve and recover nutrients from biosolids before destructive dissipation when the biosolids are thermally processed to deal with persistent contaminants of concern (e.g. microplastics), and (4) use of the recovered nutrients, and the biochar produced by thermal processing, in novel organomineral fertilisers that match specific equipment, crop and soil requirements of broad-acre cropping. Several challenges were identified and recommendations for prioritisation of future research and development are provided to enable safe beneficial reuse of biosolids-derived fertilisers. Opportunities include more efficient technologies to preserve, extract and reuse nutrients from sewage sludge and biosolids, and the production of organomineral fertiliser products with characteristics that enable reliable widespread use across broad-acre agriculture.

Systematic Literature Review: Inter-Reletedness of Innovation, Resilience and Sustainability - Major, Emerging Themes and Future Research Directions

Rationale

Research has been using resilience, sustainability and innovation interchangeably, but there is a lack of research that would provide an insight into how they are related to each other. This systematic literature review thus investigates research on sustainability, innovation and resilience, how they are related to each other, and also identifies major, emerging themes and future research directions on these topics.

Procedure

We used Bibliometrix software to visually describe articles with the highest number of citations, to present the thematic evolution of the field and present a historical map. The triangulation and thematic groups were identified and compared by two independent researchers.

Results

Resilience is involved in processes, sustainability is concerned with the outcomes, while innovation represents a pathway to achieving both resilience and sustainability. Resilience can ensure the provision of the system functions in the face of shocks and stresses and sustainability can ensure the adequate performance of the system in general. Three major themes were identified, 'socio-ecological systems', 'transformational innovation' and 'political governance', as well as three emerging themes, 'food security and agriculture', 'businesses and finance' and 'interconnected systems'. There is a need for longitudinal, multi-scale and interdisciplinary research that would explore various aspects of integrating these concepts.

Conclusion

There is a great overlap between the concepts of resilience, sustainability and innovation. Future research could study these concepts in relation to each other.
