The effect of silage type on animal performance, energy utilisation and enteric methane emission in lactating dairy cows

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of silage type on dry matter (DM) intake, nutrient digestibility, energy utilisation and methane (CH4) emission. Six late lactating Holstein dairy cows were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design study with three treatments (grass silage (GS), maize silage (MS) and whole-crop wheat silage (WCWS)) and three periods (3 weeks/period). All animals were offered forage ad libitum and 5.55 kg/day of a concentrate supplement, which contained (DM basis) 66.0% rapeseed meal, 28.3% soyabean meal and 5.7% a mineral/vitamin supplement. During each period, animals were subject to digestibility, CH4 and heat production measurements during the final 6 days using calorimeter chambers. The results demonstrated that total DM intake for MS and WCWS diets were higher (P < 0.001) than for the GS diet. Faecal energy and heat production loss for the GS diet were lower (P < 0.01) than for MS and WCWS diets. In contrast, cows fed the GS diet had higher (P < 0.05) urine energy loss compared with MS and WCWS diets. In comparison with the GS and MS diets, WCWS diet produced a lower CH4 loss per kg DM and organic matter intake (P < 0.01), and CH4 energy output as a proportion of gross energy and metabolisable energy intake (P < 0.05). The present study demonstrates that choice of forage types affects energy utilisation and CH4 emission in dairy cows.

Apparent digestibility of broken rice in horses using in vivo and in vitro methods

The aim of this study was to assess the apparent digestibility of broken rice using total collection of feces and the pepsin-cellulase in vitro technique to provide updated and more accurate digestion coefficients for this by-product when fed to horses. The in vivo digestibility trial was consecutively performed, using five adult geldings, weighing 555.6 kg on average. First, hay was given as the only feedstuff, while second, the experimental diet consisted of the same hay plus broken rice at a forage-to-concentrate ratio of 70/30 (on dry matter (DM) basis). Feces were collected over 6 days preceded by a 14-day adaptation period. The digestibility trial was carried out to determine the digestion coefficients for DM, organic matter (OM), CP and gross energy in both diets, while apparent digestion coefficients for the same parameters were calculated for broken rice alone, using the difference between the two sets of results. At the same time, an in vitro trial was carried out using pepsin-cellulase technique on the samples of hay and broken rice tested during the in vivo trial. As expected, supplementation with broken rice increased digestibility according to all the parameters used. The high OM digestion coefficients of broken rice were confirmed both by the calculated in vivo method and by the predicted results of pepsin-cellulase technique (92.6% and 87.1%, respectively), underlining the high digestibility of this by-product when fed to horses.

Evaluation of associative effects on ruminal digestion kinetics between pasture and grains using in vitro gas production method

In vitro gas production (GP) method was used to investigate associative effects on ruminal digestion when grains (corn or barley) were supplemented to spring pasture and autumn pasture. Pasture (75%) was incubated with 25% corn or barley and gas production was monitored up to 96 h. After incubation, the residues were used to determine dry matter and organic matter digestibility (DMD and OMD). Gas production parameters were analyzed by applying a single exponential equation. Organic matter effective degradability (OMED) was determined from GP parameters and OMD. The positive associative effects on the rate of GP, DMD, OMD and OMED were observed when spring pasture was incubated with corn. However, similar effects were not observed in a barley mixture. However, for autumn pasture, both corn and barley mixtures showed positive associative effects on rate of GP, OMD and OMED. The results of this study indicated that supplementation of corn would be better than barley for spring pasture with high water-soluble carbohydrate contents, whereas both grain supplementations were effective to obtain positive associative effects on the rate of GP and OMED for autumn pasture with high cell wall content.

Associative effects between feeds when concentrate supplements are fed to grazing dairy cows: a review of likely impacts on metabolisable energy supply

Efficient conversion of grazed pasture and supplementary feeds into milk is essential to the profitability of dairy farming in southern Australia as costs of production continue to rise. The application of diet formulation approaches to the nutritional management of grazing dairy cows provides unique challenges in predicting the interactions that occur between grazed herbage and supplementary feeds. How feed intake and associative effects between feeds in lactating dairy cows grazing pasture might affect estimated metabolisable energy supplied by the diet are examined. The effects of increasing feed intake in high-producing dairy cows on decreasing the digestibility of energy, and the compensatory effects of reduced methane production, are reviewed. The factors affecting intake of grazing cows and possible effects on digestibility are considered, and include characteristics of the pasture/forage and amounts and forms of concentrates. Estimates of the potential magnitude of negative associative effects in dairy cows have been made using 2 datasets from recent experiments. Finally, the potential importance of understanding and predicting the magnitude of associative effects for efficient pasture-based dairy production is discussed. It is concluded that although associative effects between feeds in grazing dairy cows cannot be predicted with certainty, and although they involve complex interactions among a number of variables, ignoring their occurrence can lead to significant errors in both feed evaluation and ration formulation.
