Core-shell particle formation via Co-assembly of AB diblock copolymers and nanoparticles in 3D soft confinement

Core-shell particle formation via co-assembly of AB diblock copolymers and nanoparticles in 3D soft confinement was studied using a simulated annealing method. Several sequences of soft confinement-induced core-shell particles were predicted as functions of the volume fraction of the nanoparticle to core-shell particles, the incompatibility between blocks, the volume fractions of A-blocks, the chain length of AB diblocks, the eccentricity of the nanoparticle, and the initial concentration of copolymers. Simulation results demonstrate that those factors are able to tune the morphology of the core-shell particles precisely. Calculated data indicate that the copolymer chain was located between a hard confinement wall composed of the nanoparticle and a soft confinement wall composed of solvents, and the arrangement direction of the copolymer chains was in a competitive equilibrium between the two. We anticipate that this work will be helpful and instructive for the preparation of polymer shells with different structures and shapes, as well as the study of self-assembly morphology of copolymers in a complex confinement systems.

Multiblock copolymer synthesis via RAFT emulsion polymerization

A multiblock copolymer is a polymer of a specific structure that consists of multiple covalently linked segments, each comprising a different monomer type. The control of the monomer sequence has often been described as the "holy grail" of synthetic polymer chemistry, with the ultimate goal being synthetic access to polymers of a "perfect" structure, where each monomeric building block is placed at a desired position along the polymer chain. Given that polymer properties are intimately linked to the microstructure and monomer distribution along the constituent chains, it goes without saying that there exist seemingly endless opportunities in terms of fine-tuning the properties of such materials by careful consideration of the length of each block, the number and order of blocks, and the inclusion of monomers with specific functional groups. The area of multiblock copolymer synthesis remains relatively unexplored, in particular with regard to structure-property relationships, and there are currently significant opportunities for the design and synthesis of advanced materials. The present review focuses on the synthesis of multiblock copolymers via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization implemented as aqueous emulsion polymerization. RAFT emulsion polymerization offers intriguing opportunities not only for the advanced synthesis of multiblock copolymers, but also provides access to polymeric nanoparticles of specific morphologies. Precise multiblock copolymer synthesis coupled with self-assembly offers material morphology control on length scales ranging from a few nanometers to a micrometer. It is imperative that polymer chemists interact with physicists and material scientists to maximize the impact of these materials of the future.

Progress in the self-assembly of organic/inorganic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) hybrids

This Review describes recent progress in the self-assembly of organic/inorganic POSS hybrids derived from mono-, di-, and multi-functionalized POSS cages. We highlight the self-assembled structures and physical properties of giant surfactants and chain-end- and side-chain-type hybrids derived from mono-functionalized POSS cages; main-chain-type hybrids derived from di-functionalized POSS cages; and star-shaped hybrids derived from multi-functionalized POSS cages; with various polymeric attachments, including polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate), phenolic, PVPh, and polypeptides.

100th Anniversary of Macromolecular Science Viewpoint: Block Copolymer Particles: Tuning Shape, Interfaces, and Morphology

Confined assembly of block copolymers (BCPs) is receiving increasing attention due to the ability to create unconventional morphologies that cannot be observed in the corresponding bulk systems. This effect is further driven by the simplicity and versatility of these procedures for controlling the shape of particles prepared by 3D soft confinement of BCPs in emulsions. By taking advantage of a mobile emulsion interface, the one-step formation of nonspherical BCP particles through spontaneous deformation is possible with design principles and theoretical models for controlling shape/nanostructure now being established. This Viewpoint highlights strategies for shape tuning of BCP particles, currently accessible shapes, their controllability, and potential application. The emergence of 3D soft confinement of BCPs and related theory is overviewed with a focus on current strategies, types of nonspherical shapes achieved, and structure-property relationships for nonspherical BCP particles. Finally, the applications and future perspectives for these materials are discussed.

Formation Mechanisms of Porous Particles from Self-Assembly of Amphiphilic Diblock Copolymers inside an Oil-in-Water Emulsion Droplet upon Solvent Evaporation

The formation mechanisms of porous particles from self-assembly of amphiphilic diblock copolymers inside an oil-in-water emulsion droplet upon evaporation of the organic solvent are investigated based on Monte Carlo simulations for the first time. A morphological diagram of particles is constructed as a function of the surfactant concentration (φ) and the copolymer composition characterized by the volume fraction of the hydrophilic B block ( f_B). Particles with various morphologies are predicted. Morphological sequences from non-porosity to closed-porosity to capsules and finally to open-porosity particles are usually observed with increasing φ when f_B ≤ 1/2, with the only exception that capsules do not occur when f_B = 1/6. Furthermore, the critical φ value for a given morphological transition usually decreases with increasing f_B. Micelles are always observed at higher φ regions when f_B > 1/2. It is found that the specific surface area falls on almost the same regime for particles with the same kind of morphology, indicating that the morphology of a particle largely determines its specific surface area. The chain stretching varies with the particle morphology. It is the presence of the surfactant that makes the formation of porous particles possible, while when φ > 0, multiple morphological transitions can be induced by changing f_B. In the process of organic solvent removal, the value of f_B may affect the shape of pores inside the droplet and hence leads to the f_B dependence of the morphological sequences. When the solvent evaporation is not too fast, the resulting morphological sequence does not depend on the evaporation rate. Our results are compared with related experiments.

Virus-like particles composed of sphere-forming polystyrene-block-poly(t-butyl acrylate) (PS-b-PtBA) and control of surface morphology by homopolymer blending

Submicron-sized virus-like particles comprising asymmetric PS-b-PtBA diblock copolymer particles having dot patterns on their surface were successfully prepared by a simple solvent evaporation process.

Three-Dimensional Printing of pH-Responsive and Functional Polymers on an Affordable Desktop Printer

In this work we describe the synthesis, thermal and rheological characterization, hot-melt extrusion, and three-dimensional printing (3DP) of poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP). We investigate the effect of thermal processing conditions on physical properties of produced filaments in order to achieve high quality, 3D-printable filaments for material extrusion 3DP (ME3DP). Mechanical properties and processing performances of P2VP were enhanced by addition of 12 wt % acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), which reinforced P2VP fibers. We 3D-print P2VP filaments using an affordable 3D printer. The pyridine moieties are cross-linked and quaternized postprinting to form 3D-printed pH-responsive hydrogels. The printed objects exhibited dynamic and reversible pH-dependent swelling. These hydrogels act as flow-regulating valves, controlling the flow rate with pH. Additionally, a macroporous P2VP membrane was 3D-printed and the coordinating ability of the pyridyl groups was employed to immobilize silver precursors on its surface. After the reduction of silver ions, the structure was used to catalyze the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol with a high efficiency. This is a facile technique to print recyclable catalytic objects.

35th Australasian Polymer Symposium (APS) Research Highlights

This introduction sets the background to this special issue containing papers collected from the 35th Australasian Polymer Symposium (35APS) which was held on the Gold Coast, Queensland, from 12 to 15 July 2015. These works illustrate both the multidisciplinary nature and the breadth and depth of contemporary polymer science and engineering that was discussed at this meeting.
