Abstract
The accessibility of multiple valence states of americium (Am) inspired redox-based protocols aimed at efficient separation of trivalent Am (Am3+) from trivalent lanthanides (Ln3+) alternative to the traditional liquid-liquid extraction. This requires an extensive understanding of the coordination chemistry of Am in its various accessible valence states in the aqueous phase. In this work, by means of DFT calculations, the coordination of AmIII-VI with five typical N-donor ligands, i.e., terpyridine (tpy), bispyrazinylpyridine (dpp), bistriazinylpyridine (BTP), bistriazinyl bipyridine (BTBP), and bistrazinyl phenanthroline (BTPhen), was studied in terms of energy and topological analysis. The results show that the exchange of aqua ligands of hydrated ions by N-donor ligands is an entropy-driven process and enthalpically unfavorable. Topological analysis suggests a distinct mechanism of BTP to modulate the redox potential of Am(III) in that BTP can assist the relay of the leaving electron of AmIII, while the other N-donor ligands can detain the oxidation of Am by offering their electron instead. This comparative study enriches our understanding of the coordination chemistry of high-valent Am with N-donor ligands and recommends the ligand design toward the modulation of redox potentials of hydrated Am(III) ions.

Isomeric 4,2′:6′,4″- and 3,2′:6′,3″-Terpyridines with Isomeric 4′-Trifluoromethylphenyl Substituents: Effects on the Assembly of Coordination Polymers with [Cu(hfacac)2] (Hhfacac = Hexafluoropentane-2,4-dione). Abstract
The isomers 4′-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-4,2′:6′,4″-terpyridine (1), 4′-(3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-4,2′:6′,4″-terpyridine (2), 4′-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-3,2′:6′,3″-terpyridine (3), and 4′-(3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-3,2′:6′,3″-terpyridine (4) have been prepared and characterized. The single crystal structures of 1 and 2 were determined. The 1D-polymers [Cu2(hfacac)4(1)2]n·2nC6H4Cl2 (Hhfacac = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoropentane-2,4-dione), [Cu(hfacac)2(2)]n·2nC6H5Me, [Cu2(hfacac)4(3)2]n·nC6H4Cl2, [Cu2(hfacac)4(3)2]n·nC6H5Cl, and [Cu(hfacac)2(4)]n·nC6H5Cl have been formed by reactions of 1, 2, 3 and 4 with [Cu(hfacac)2]·H2O under conditions of crystal growth by layering and four of these coordination polymers have been formed on a preparative scale. [Cu2(hfacac)4(1)2]n·2nC6H4Cl2 and [Cu(hfacac)2(2)]n·2nC6H5Me are zig-zag chains and the different substitution position of the CF3 group in 1 and 2 does not affect this motif. Packing of the polymer chains is governed mainly by C–F...F–C contacts, and there are no inter-polymer π-stacking interactions. The conformation of the 3,2′:6′,3″-tpy unit in [Cu2(hfacac)4(3)2]n·nC6H4Cl2 and [Cu(hfacac)2(4)]n·nC6H5Cl differs, leading to different structural motifs in the 1D-polymer backbones. In [Cu(hfacac)2(4)]n·nC6H5Cl, the peripheral 3-CF3C6H4 unit is accommodated in a pocket between two {Cu(hfacac)2} units and engages in four C–Hphenyl...F–Chfacac contacts which lock the phenylpyridine unit in a near planar conformation. In [Cu2(hfacac)4(3)2]n·nC6H4Cl2 and [Cu(hfacac)2(4)]n·nC6H5Cl, π-stacking interactions between 4′-trifluoromethylphenyl-3,2′:6′,3″-tpy domains are key packing interactions, and this contrasts with the packing of polymers incorporating 1 and 2. We use powder X-ray diffraction to demonstrate that the assemblies of the coordination polymers are reproducible, and that a switch from a 4,2′:6′,4″- to 3,2′:6′,3″-tpy metal-binding unit is accompanied by a change from dominant C–F...F–C and C–F...H–C contacts to π-stacking of arene domains between ligands 3 or 4.

Abstract
The use of divergent 4,2′:6′,4″- and 3,2′:6′,3″-terpyridine ligands as linkers and/or nodes in extended coordination assemblies has gained in popularity over the last decade. However, there is also a range of coordination polymers which feature 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine metal-binding domains. Of the remaining 45 isomers of terpyridine, few have been utilized in extended coordination arrays. Here, we provide an overview of coordination polymers and networks containing isomers of terpyridine and either zinc(II) and cadmium(II). Although the motivation for investigations of many of these systems is their luminescent behavior, we have chosen to focus mainly on structural details, and we assess to what extent assemblies are reproducible. We also consider cases where there is structural evidence for competitive product formation. A point that emerges is the lack of systematic investigations.

Abstract
The preparation and characterization of 4'-(4-n-octyloxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine (8) and 4'-(4-n-nonyloxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine (9) are reported. The single crystal structures of 4'-(4-n-hexyloxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine (6), 4'-(4-n-heptyloxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3″-terpyridine (7), and compounds 8 and 9 have been determined. The conformation of the 3,2':6',3″-tpy unit is trans, trans in 6 and 7, but switches to cis, trans in 8 and 9. This is associated with significant changes in the packing interactions with a more dominant role for van der Waals interactions between adjacent n-alkyloxy chains and C-Hmethylene... π interactions in 8 and 9. The solid-state structures of 6 and 7 with the n-hexyloxy and n-heptyloxy chains feature interwoven sheets of supramolecular assemblies of molecules, with pairs of n-alkyloxy chains threaded through cavities in an adjacent sheet.

Abstract
Five coordination polymers formed from combinations of copper(II) acetate and 4'-(4-alkyloxyphenyl)-3,2':6',3''-terpyridines with methoxy (1), n-butoxy (2), n-pentyloxy (3) and n-heptyloxy (4) substituents are reported. Reaction of 1 with Cu(OAc)2∙H2O leads to the 1D-polymer [Cu2(μ-OAc)4(1)]n in which {Cu2(-OAc)4} paddle-wheel units are connected by ligands 1, or [{Cu4(μ3-OH)2(μ-OAc)2(μ3-OAc)2(AcO-κO)2(1)2}.2MeOH]n in which centrosymmetric tetranuclear clusters link pairs of ligands 1 to give a double-stranded 1D-polymer. Layering solutions of Cu(OAc)2∙H2O (in MeOH) over 2, 3 or 4 (in CHCl3) leads to the assembly of the 1D-polymers [2{Cu2(μ-OAc)4(2)}.1.25MeOH]n, [Cu2(μ-OAc)4(3)]n and [{Cu2(μ-OAc)4(4)}.0.2CHCl3]n. In all compounds, the 3,2':6',3''-tpy unit coordinates only through the outer pyridine rings, but the conformation of the 3,2':6',3''-tpy responds to changes in the length of the alkyloxy tails leading to changes in the conformation of the polymer backbone and in the packing of the chains in the crystal lattice in the chains featuring {Cu2(-OAc)4} paddle-wheel linkers.

Abstract
Four novel ZnII coordination polymers, [(ZnCl₂)₂(L)₂]n (1), [(ZnBr₂)₂(L)₂]n (2), and [(ZnI₂)₂(L)₂]n (3) and {[Zn(SCN)₂]1.5(L)₃}n (4), have been synthesized based on 4'-ferrocenyl-3,2':6',3''-terpyridine with ZnII ions and different coordination anions under similar ambient conditions. Their structures have been confirmed using single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, showing that complexes 1-3 are one-dimensional (1D) double-stranded metal ion helical polymer chains and complex 4 is of a two-dimensional (2D) network. The structural transformations of them from a 1D polymer chain to a 2D network under the influence of the coordination anions has been systematic investigated. Furthermore, the optical band gaps have been measured by optical diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, revealing that the ligand and the complexes should have semiconductor properties.

Abstract
A comparative investigation of the coordination assemblies formed between Co(NCS)₂ and two monotopic 4,2':6',4''-terpyridine (4,2':6',4"-tpy) ligands or two related ditopic ligands is reported. Crystals were grown by layering MeOH solutions of Co(NCS)₂ over a CHCl₃ or 1,2-C₆H₄Cl₂ solution of the respective ligand at room temperature. With 4'-(2-methylpyrimidin-5-yl)-4,2':6',4"-terpyridine (6), the 1D-coordination polymer {[Co₂(NCS)₄(MeOH)₄(6)₂]∙2MeOH∙8H₂O}n assembles with 6 coordinating only through the outer N-donors of the 4,2':6',4"-tpy unit; coordination by the MeOH solvent blocks two cobalt coordination sites preventing propagation in a higher-dimensional network. A combination of Co(NCS)₂ and 1-(4,2':6',4"-terpyridin-4'-yl)ferrocene (7) leads to {[Co(NCS)₂(7)₂]∙4CHCl₃}n which contains a (4,4) net; the 2D-sheets associate through π-stacking interactions between ferrocenyl and pyridyl units. A 3D-framework is achieved through use of the ditopic ligand 1,4-bis(npropoxy)-2,5-bis(4,2':6',4"-terpyridin-4'-yl)benzene (8) which acts as a 4-connecting node in {[Co(NCS)₂(8)₂].2C₆H₄Cl₂}n; the combination of metal and ligand planar 4-connecting nodes results in a {6⁵.8} cds net. For a comparison with the coordinating abilities of the previously reported 1,4-bis(noctoxy)-2,5-bis(4,2':6',4"-terpyridin-4'-yl)benzene (3), a more flexible analogue 9 was prepared. {[Co(NCS)₂(9)]∙2CHCl₃}n contains a (4,4) net defined by both metal and ligand planar 4-connecting nodes. The noctoxy tails of 9 protrude from each side of the (4,4) net and thread through adjacent sheets; the arene-attached noctoxy chains associate through a combination of van der Waals and C-H...π interactions.
