Abstract
Inappropriate management practices of domestic animals during pregnancy can be potential stressors, resulting in complex behavioural, physiological and neurological consequences in the developing offspring. Some of these consequences can last into adulthood or propagate to subsequent generations. We systematically summarized the results of different experimental patterns using artificially increased maternal glucocorticoid levels or prenatal maternal physiological stress paradigms, mediators between prenatal maternal stress (PMS) and programming effects in the offspring and the effects of PMS on offspring phenotypes in sheep. PMS can impair birthweight, regulate the development of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, modify behavioural patterns and cognitive abilities and alter gene expression and brain morphology in offspring. Further research should focus on the effects of programming on gene expression, immune function, gut microbiome, sex-specific effects and maternal behaviour of offspring, especially comparative studies of gestational periods when PMS is applied, continual studies of programming effects on offspring and treatment strategies that effectively reverse the detrimental programming effects of prenatal stress.

Abstract
The effect of shearing ewes at 50 days of gestation on birth and weaning weight, vigour of the lambs in the first hour of life and the survival of single and twin lambs was investigated. Ultrasound pregnancy diagnosis was used to allocate 140 Polwarth ewes on Day 50 of gestation to one of four treatments, including two factors: shearing time (prepartum (PS) and postpartum (U)) and litter size (single (S) and twin (T)) resulting in the following treatments: single-bearing ewes shorn at 50 days of gestation (SPS, n = 39), single-bearing ewes unshorn (SU, n = 40), twin-bearing ewes shorn at 50 days of gestation (TPS, n = 28) and twin-bearing ewes unshorn (TU, n = 33). All ewes grazed together on improved pastures. Body condition score of the ewes was recorded once every 2 weeks from shearing until weaning, and plasma concentration of NEFA in ewes was measured once every 2 weeks from Day 30 postpartum until weaning (Day 104 ± 7). Gestation length, lamb behaviour during the first hour of life, lamb weight at birth and daily weight gain from birth to weaning and lamb survival were measured. Ewe body condition and plasma non-esterified fatty acids concentration was not affected by shearing time or litter size. Birthweight of the lambs was affected by shearing time (P = 0.0002), litter size (P < 0.0001) and sex of the lamb (P = 0.03). Lambs born to PS ewes had higher daily growth rate (P < 0.0001) than lambs born to U ewes (0.149 ± 0.07 vs 0.141 ± 0.07 kg, respectively). Birthweight affected the number of assisted lambs at birth (P = 0.01). Length of gestation was affected by shearing time (P < 0.0001). Sucking ability was improved by shearing time and litter size. Lambs born to PS ewes tried to suck (P = 0.01) and successfully sucked (P = 0.009) before lambs born to U ewes (23.3 ± 2 vs 28.7 ± 2 and 37.6 ± 1 vs 38.4 ± 1 min, respectively). Attempt and success to suck was affected by litter size (P = 0.004 and P = 0.05). TPS-born lambs tried to suck before (P = 0.004) and successfully sucked earlier (P = 0.0004) than TU lambs (26.1 ± 2.5 vs 33.7 ± 2 and 38 ± 1 vs 42.1 ± 2 min, respectively). Shearing time affected lamb survival at 20 days of age (P = 0.04). The improved survival in these lambs, expressed by a higher birthweight and vigour at birth, may be explained by better nutrition in utero in response to shearing during early pregnancy. In contrast to previous research on prepartum shearing, the present experiment shearing was done at 50 days of gestation. Early shearing in gestation might coincide with a period of high cell proliferation, intense vascular development and increased uterine and umbilical blood flows in the placenta which is in rapid development, and may result in improved outcomes when compared with shearing done on Day 70 or later of gestation.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to examine the factors associated with the death of neonatal lambs. Postmortem autopsy data were collected from 3198 newborn lambs in the Sheep CRCs Information Nucleus Flock situated in various environments throughout southern Australia. The proportion dying by category from highest to lowest was starvation–mismothering (25%), stillbirth (21%), birth injury (18%), dystocia (9%), death in utero–prematurity (10%), predation (7%), cold exposure (5%), undiagnosed (4%), infection (1%) or misadventure (1%). Factors best explaining the probability of lambs falling into a death category included both birth type and birthweight for dystocia, stillbirth, starvation–mismothering and death in utero–prematurity. The probability of a lamb falling into any category was predicted at the mean birthweight, within birth type. Single-born lambs were more likely to die from dystocia and stillbirth, while twin lambs were more likely to die from birth injury, starvation–mismothering or from undiagnosed causes. Triplet lambs were more likely to die from starvation–mismothering or death in utero–prematurity. Sire type (Merino, maternal or terminal) did not affect the proportions of lambs within any category. The proportions lost to each cause of death were largely consistent among locations, despite the rate of death varying. Dystocia, stillbirth and birth injury, as evidenced by the presence of oedema around the head and neck or by lesions of the central nervous system, accounted for 48% of autopsied lambs. We conclude that for improvements to occur in the rates of lamb survival, the Australian sheep industry must focus on minimising losses due to dystocia, stillbirth, birth injury and starvation.

Abstract
Lambing percentage is the main contributor to higher profit on New Zealand sheep farms and has increased from 98% in 1960 to 124% in 2006. As ewe litter size increases so does the proportion of triplet-born lambs and consequently preweaning mortality rate. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of birthweight (BWT) on survival in triplet-born lambs within and among litters.
Data from a total of 594 triplet crossbreed lambs born to mixed-age ewes was analysed. For the statistical analysis, the lambs were allocated according to their BWT, and within the litter were then allocated to three BWT groups (light, medium and heavy). The following parameters were calculated: total litter BWT (TBWT), percentage of TBWT for each lamb (PBWT = BWT/TBWT), coefficient of variation for BWT within litter and lamb average daily gain from birth to weaning.
The mortality rate for the light, medium and heavy lambs was 56, 40 and 28%, respectively, and consequently the lightest lamb in a litter was 3.2 times more likely to die than the heaviest lamb. In the light lamb group, as BWT increased mortality decreased (P = 0.006), for medium lambs BWT did not influence mortality (P = 0.88) and in the heavy group there was a trend of increased BWT associated with increased mortality (P = 0.10). The negative relationship between lamb mortality and PBWT was identical in the three BWT groups (P < 0.0001). The effect of BWT on lamb mortality became non-significant when PBWT was fitted in the same model. This means that, in triplet-born lambs, mortality is not influenced by the BWT of the lamb itself, but by the BWT of its littermates. It can be calculated that a 4-kg lamb has a 24% chance of surviving in a litter of 16 kg, a 60% chance in a litter of 12 kg and an 87% chance of surviving in a litter of 8 kg. It is concluded that reducing the variation in BWT within a litter, or specifically managing the lightest lamb at birth, will increase the competitive ability for survival of each lamb and, therefore, decrease overall mortality and further improve farm profitability.

Abstract
The aim of the present experiment was to ascertain if mid-pregnancy shearing of autumn-lambing ewes would increase the birthweight of the lambs. Following pregnancy diagnosis, 123 pregnant ewes were randomly allocated to one of two treatment groups. One group was shorn on day 74 of pregnancy (P74) and both treatment groups were managed as one mob. Ewe liveweights were recorded on day 53 of pregnancy (P53), day 141 of pregnancy (P141), and 45 (L45) and 75 days (L75) after the start of the lambing period. Lamb liveweights were recorded within the first 24 h of birth, L45 and L75. In addition, girth circumference, crown–rump length, fore leg length and rear leg length were measured within the first 24 h of birth. Ewe liveweight, inclusive of the removed fleece, did not differ between treatment groups at P53, P141, L45 or L75. Lambs born to shorn ewes were heavier at birth compared with lambs born to unshorn ewes (P < 0.05; 4.56 v. 4.24, respectively), but not at L45 or L75. Girth circumference (P < 0.01), crown–rump length (P < 0.05) and fore leg length (P < 0.01) were also longer in lambs born to shorn ewes. It was concluded that ewes shearing ewes in the summer–autumn period can be used as a means of increasing lamb birthweight.
