An Initial Study on the Use of Machine Learning and Radio Frequency Identification Data for Predicting Health Outcomes in Free-Range Laying Hens

Maintaining the health and welfare of laying hens is key to achieving peak productivity and has become significant for assuring consumer confidence in the industry. Free-range egg production systems represent diverse environments, with a range of challenges that undermine flock performance not experienced in more conventional production systems. These challenges can include increased exposure to parasites and bacterial or viral infection, along with injuries and plumage damage resulting from increased freedom of movement and interaction with flock-mates. The ability to forecast the incidence of these health challenges across the production lifecycle for individual laying hens could result in an opportunity to make significant economic savings. By delivering the opportunity to reduce mortality rates and increase egg laying rates, the implementation of flock monitoring systems can be a viable solution. This study investigates the use of Radio Frequency Identification technologies (RFID) and machine learning to identify production system usage patterns and to forecast the health status for individual hens. Analysis of the underpinning data is presented that focuses on identifying correlations and structure that are significant for explaining the performance of predictive models that are trained on these challenging, highly unbalanced, datasets. A machine learning workflow was developed that incorporates data resampling to overcome the dataset imbalance and the identification/refinement of important data features. The results demonstrate promising performance, with an average 28% of Spotty Liver Disease, 33% round worm, and 33% of tape worm infections correctly predicted at the end of production. The analysis showed that monitoring hens during the early stages of egg production shows similar performance to models trained with data obtained at later periods of egg production. Future work could improve on these initial predictions by incorporating additional data streams to create a more complete view of flock health.

ASAS-NANP SYMPOSIUM: MATHEMATICAL MODELING IN ANIMAL NUTRITION: Opportunities and Challenges of Confined and Extensive Precision Livestock Production

Modern animal scientists, industry, and managers have never faced a more complex world. Precision livestock technologies have altered management in confined operations to meet production, environmental, and consumer goals. Applications of precision technologies have been limited in extensive systems such as rangelands due to lack of infrastructure, electrical power, communication, and durability. However, advancements in technology have helped to overcome many of these challenges. Investment in precision technologies is growing within the livestock sector, requiring the need to assess opportunities and challenges associated with implementation to enhance livestock production systems. In this review, precision livestock farming and digital livestock farming are explained in the context of a logical and iterative five-step process to successfully integrate precision livestock measurement and management tools, emphasizing the need for precision system models (PSMs). This five-step process acts as a guide to realize anticipated benefits from precision technologies and avoid unintended consequences. Consequently, the synthesis of precision livestock and modeling examples and key case studies help highlight past challenges and current opportunities within confined and extensive systems. Successfully developing PSM requires appropriate model(s) selection that aligns with desired management goals and precision technology capabilities. Therefore, it is imperative to consider the entire system to ensure that precision technology integration achieves desired goals while remaining economically and managerially sustainable. Achieving long-term success using precision technology requires the next generation of animal scientists to obtain additional skills to keep up with the rapid pace of technology innovation. Building workforce capacity and synergistic relationships between research, industry, and managers will be critical. As the process of precision technology adoption continues in more challenging and harsh, extensive systems, it is likely that confined operations will benefit from required advances in precision technology and PSMs, ultimately strengthening the benefits from precision technology to achieve short- and long-term goals.

Design Topologies of a CMOS Charge Pump Circuit for Low Power Applications

Applications such as non-volatile memories (NVM), radio frequency identification (RFID), high voltage generators, switched capacitor circuits, operational amplifiers, voltage regulators, and DC–DC converters employ charge pump (CP) circuits as they can generate a higher output voltage from the very low supply voltage. Besides, continuous power supply reduction, low implementation cost, and high efficiency can be managed using CP circuits in low-power applications in the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process. This study aims to figure out the most widely used CP design topologies for embedded systems on the chip (SoC). Design methods have evolved from diode-connected structures to dynamic clock voltage scaling charge pumps have been discussed in this research. Based on the different architecture, operating principles and optimization techniques with their advantages and disadvantages have compared with the final output. Researchers mainly focused on designing the charge pump topologies based on input/output voltage, pumping efficiency, power dissipation, charge transfer capability, design complexity, pumping capacitor, clock frequencies with a minimum load balance, etc. Finally, this review study summarizes with the discussion on the outline of appropriate schemes and recommendations to future researchers in selecting the most suitable CP design methods for low power applications.

Sustainable sheep production and consumer preference trends: compatibilities, contradictions, and unresolved dilemmas

There are increasing concerns of society towards the consumption of animal products which have been produced and transformed in a sustainable manner. This trend influences consumer purchasing decision making, particularly in developed countries. On the other hand, in the next years, the pressure to increase the volume and efficiency of meat production will be much higher to cope with the expected unsatisfied demand. At least in part, current and future technologies could contribute to solve this challenge. However, the use of some of these innovations could have a negative effect on consumer preferences. There is no consensus in our society about this dilemma. The objective of this paper is to review the scientific evidence related to these topics and to analyze and discuss the effect of some of the extrinsic and intrinsic factors linked with the sheep industry which could affect the acceptability of lamb meat by consumers.

Refugia-based strategies for sustainable worm control: factors affecting the acceptability to sheep and goat owners

Sustainable nematode management programs aim to minimise animal production loss and prevent parasitic disease, without increasing the level of anthelmintic resistance. Resistance management strategies are now largely based on the "refugia" concept, by which populations of nematodes not recently exposed to treatment are deliberately allowed to survive. Progeny from the unselected parasites provide a source of less-resistant worms which can dilute resistant worms surviving anthelmintics, and hence reduce the rate of resistance development. This can be achieved by either modifying strategic treatment regimens to ensure the survival of infective worm larvae on pasture, or by avoiding treatments to individual animals identified as best able to cope with parasites. These strategies include "targeted treatment" (based on estimates of worm-burdens) and "targeted selective treatment" (based on indications of parasitic effects). However, the departure from conventional anthelmintic approaches represents a major conceptual challenge to many livestock owners. Factors that may affect the wide adoption of refugia strategies include the increased risk of parasitism and production loss, the effectiveness of reducing the development of resistance, the practicality of implementation, and the direct effects on costs and labour efficiency. The acceptance of particular strategies is likely to vary considerably according to environmental effects, nematode species, animal production aims and resource availability. However, recent indications that comparatively small changes to present practices can provide substantial refugia benefits suggest that appropriate resistance management approaches can be developed for different situations.
