Prediction of Attractive Level Crossing via a Dissipative Mode

The new field of spin cavitronics focuses on the interaction between the magnon excitation of a magnetic element and the electromagnetic wave in a microwave cavity. In the strong interaction regime, such an interaction usually gives rise to the level anticrossing for the magnonic and the electromagnetic mode. Recently, the attractive level crossing has been observed, and it is explained by a non-Hermitian model Hamiltonian. However, the mechanism of such attractive coupling is still unclear. We reveal the secret by using a simple model with two harmonic oscillators coupled to a third oscillator with large dissipation. We further identify this dissipative third party as the invisible cavity mode with large leakage in cavity-magnon experiments. This understanding enables one to design dissipative coupling in all sorts of coupled systems.

Vibrational coupling in plasmonic molecules

Plasmon hybridization theory, inspired by molecular orbital theory, has been extremely successful in describing the near-field coupling in clusters of plasmonic nanoparticles, also known as plasmonic molecules. However, the vibrational modes of plasmonic molecules have been virtually unexplored. By designing precisely configured plasmonic molecules of varying complexity and probing them at the individual plasmonic molecule level, intramolecular coupling of acoustic modes, mediated by the underlying substrate, is observed. The strength of this coupling can be manipulated through the configuration of the plasmonic molecules. Surprisingly, classical continuum elastic theory fails to account for the experimental trends, which are well described by a simple coupled oscillator picture that assumes the vibrational coupling is mediated by coherent phonons with low energies. These findings provide a route to the systematic optical control of the gigahertz response of metallic nanostructures, opening the door to new optomechanical device strategies.

Photoacoustics of single laser-trapped nanodroplets for the direct observation of nanofocusing in aerosol photokinetics

Photochemistry taking place in atmospheric aerosol droplets has a significant impact on the Earth's climate. Nanofocusing of electromagnetic radiation inside aerosols plays a crucial role in their absorption behaviour, since the radiation flux inside the droplet strongly affects the activation rate of photochemically active species. However, size-dependent nanofocusing effects in the photokinetics of small aerosols have escaped direct observation due to the inability to measure absorption signatures from single droplets. Here we show that photoacoustic measurements on optically trapped single nanodroplets provide a direct, broadly applicable method to measure absorption with attolitre sensitivity. We demonstrate for a model aerosol that the photolysis is accelerated by an order of magnitude in the sub-micron to micron size range, compared with larger droplets. The versatility of our technique promises broad applicability to absorption studies of aerosol particles, such as atmospheric aerosols where quantitative photokinetic data are critical for climate predictions.

A plethora of plasmonics from the laboratory for nanophotonics at Rice University

The study of the surface plasmons of noble metals has emerged as one of the most rapidly growing and dynamic topics in nanoscience. Key advances in the synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles and nanostructures have resulted in a broad variety of structures whose geometries can be controlled systematically at the nanoscale. Arising from these efforts is a new level of insight and understanding regarding the fundamental properties of localized plasmons supported by these structures, and, in particular, the properties of interacting plasmon systems. This additional insight has led to the design of plasmonic systems that support coherent phenomena, such as Fano resonances. A broad range of applications are emerging for these structures: single- nanoparticle and nanogap chemical sensors, low-loss plasmon waveguides, and active plasmonic devices and detectors. Applications in biomedicine that exploit the strong photothermal response of nanoparticle plasmons have developed and advanced into clinical trials. The Laboratory for Nanophotonics at Rice has been home to many of these advances. Here, we showcase a variety of functional plasmonic materials and nanodevices emerging from our individual and collaborative efforts.

From plasmon spectra of metallic to vibron spectra of dielectric nanoparticles

Light interacts surprisingly differently with small particles than with bulk or gas phase materials. This can cause rare phenomena such as the occurence of a "blue moon". Spectroscopic particle phenomena of similar physical origin have also spawned countless applications ranging from remote sensing to medicine. Despite the broad interest in particle spectra, their interpretation still poses many challenges. In this Account, we discuss the challenges associated with the analysis of infrared, or vibron, extinction spectra of small dielectric particles. The comparison with the more widely studied plasmon spectra of metallic nano-particles reveals many common features. The shape, size, and architecture of particles influence the band profiles in vibron and plasmon spectra in similar ways. However, the molecular structure of dielectric particles produces infrared spectral features that are more diverse and detailed or even unique to vibron spectra. More complexity means higher information content, but that also makes the spectra more difficult to interpret. Conventional models such as classical electromagnetic theory with a continuum description of the wavelength-dependent optical constants are often no longer applicable to these spectra. In cases where accurate optical constants are not available and for ultrafine particles, where the molecular structure and quantum effects become essential, researchers must resort to molecular models for light-particle interaction that do not require the prior knowledge of optical constants. In this Account, we illustrate how vibrational exciton approaches combined with molecular dynamics simulations and solid-state density functional calculations provide a viable solution to these challenges. Molecular models reveal two important characteristics of vibron spectra of small molecularly structured particles. The band profiles in vibron spectra are largely determined by transition dipole coupling between the molecules in a particle. Below a specific particle size limit, conventional models fail. Molecular models explain many other phenomena in particle spectra, such as size, shape, and mixing effects, providing the foundation for a better understanding of the interaction of solar radiation with aerosols and clouds and for the design of dielectric nanomaterials.

Infrared spectroscopy and modeling of co-crystalline CO2·C2H2 aerosol particles. I. The formation and decomposition of co-crystalline CO2·C2H2 aerosol particles

Aerosol particles composed of co-crystalline CO(2)·C(2)H(2) were generated in a bath gas cooling cell at cryogenic temperatures and investigated with infrared spectroscopy between 600 and 4000 cm(-1). Similar to results obtained for thin films of the co-crystal [T. E. Gough and T. E. Rowat, J. Chem. Phys. 109, 6809 (1998)], this phase was found to be metastable and decomposed into pure CO(2) and pure C(2)H(2). These decomposed aerosols were characterized through (i) a comparison to experimentally prepared aerosols of mixed CO(2) and C(2)H(2) of known architectures and (ii) the modeling of infrared spectra. A likely architecture after decomposition are C(2)H(2)-CO(2) core-shell particles with a disk-like shape. The co-crystalline CO(2)·C(2)H(2) aerosols prior to decomposition are modeled and analyzed in detail in the subsequent paper (Part II).
