Directed nucleation and growth by balancing local supersaturation and substrate/nucleus lattice mismatch

Galvanic-Replacement-Assisted Synthesis of Nanostructured Silver-Surface for SERS Characterization of Two-Dimensional Polymers

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy is a powerful technology in trace analysis. However, the wide applications of SERS in practice are limited by the expensive substrate materials and the complicated preparation processes. Here we report a simple and economical galvanic-replacement-assisted synthesis route to prepare Ag nanoparticles on Cu(0) foil (nanoAg@Cu), which can be directly used as SERS substrate. The fabrication process is fast (ca. 10 min) and easily scaled up to centimeters or even larger. In addition, the morphology of the nanoAg@Cu (with Ag particles size from 30 nm to 160 nm) can be adjusted by various additives (e.g., amino-containing ligands). Finally, we show that the as-prepared nanoAg@Cu can be used for SERS characterization of two-dimensional polymers, and ca. 298 times relative enhancement of Raman intensity is achieved. This work offers a simple and economical strategy for the scalable fabrication of silver-based SERS substrate in thin film analysis.

Light-driven nucleation, growth, and patterning of biorelevant crystals using resonant near-infrared laser heating

Spatiotemporal control over crystal nucleation and growth is of fundamental interest for understanding how organisms assemble high-performance biominerals, and holds relevance for manufacturing of functional materials. Many methods have been developed towards static or global control, however gaining simultaneously dynamic and local control over crystallization remains challenging. Here, we show spatiotemporal control over crystallization of retrograde (inverse) soluble compounds induced by locally heating water using near-infrared (NIR) laser light. We modulate the NIR light intensity to start, steer, and stop crystallization of calcium carbonate and laser-write with micrometer precision. Tailoring the crystallization conditions overcomes the inherently stochastic crystallization behavior and enables positioning single crystals of vaterite, calcite, and aragonite. We demonstrate straightforward extension of these principles toward other biorelevant compounds by patterning barium-, strontium-, and calcium carbonate, as well as strontium sulfate and calcium phosphate. Since many important compounds exhibit retrograde solubility behavior, NIR-induced heating may enable light-controlled crystallization with precise spatiotemporal control.

Hydrothermal topotactic epitaxy of SrTiO3 on Bi4Ti3O12 nanoplatelets: understanding the interplay of lattice mismatch and supersaturation

The engineering of epitaxial, two-dimensional (2D) nano-heterostructures has stimulated great interest owing to an expectation of better functional properties (e.g., photocatalytic, piezoelectric). Hydrothermal topotactic epitaxy is one of the promising synthetic approaches for their preparation, particularly the formation of a highly ordered, epitaxial interface and possibilities for the preparation of anisotropic nanostructures of symmetrical materials. The present study highlights the key parameters when steering the alkaline, hydrothermal, topochemical conversion process from Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂ nanoplatelets to the intermediate, epitaxial, SrTiO₃/Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂ nano-heterostructures and the final SrTiO₃ nanoplatelets by balancing the lattice mismatch and the supersaturation. An atomic-scale examination revealed the formation of an ordered epitaxial SrTiO₃/Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂ interface with the presence of dislocations. The SrTiO₃ grows in islands for a stoichiometric amount of Sr (Sr/Ti = 1) and the growth resembles a layer-by-layer mode for surplus Sr content (Sr/Ti ≥ 12). The latter enables SrTiO₃ overgrowth of the Bi₄Ti₃O₁₂ basal surface planes, protecting them against dissolution from the top and consequently ensuring the preservation of the platelet morphology during the entire transformation process, the kinetics of which is controlled by the base concentration. A developed understanding of this particular transformation provides the guiding principles and ideas for designing other defined or complex epitaxial heterostructures and structures under low-temperature hydrothermal conditions.

Classical and Nonclassical Nucleation and Growth Mechanisms for Nanoparticle Formation

All solid materials are created via nucleation. In this evolutionary process, nuclei form in solution or at interfaces and expand by monomeric growth, oriented attachment, and phase transformation. Nucleation determines the location and size of nuclei, whereas growth controls the size, shape, and aggregation of newly formed nanoparticles. These physical properties of nanoparticles can determine their functionalities, reactivities, and porosities, as well as their fate and transport. Recent advances in nanoscale analytical technologies allow in situ real-time observations, enabling us to uncover the molecular nature of nuclei and the critical controlling factors for nucleation and growth. Although a single theory cannot yet fully explain such evolving processes, we have started to better understand how both classical and nonclassical theories can work together, and we have begun to recognize the importance of connecting these theories. This review discusses the recent convergence of knowledge about the nucleation and the growth of nanoparticles. Light-Controlled Nucleation and Shaping of Self-Assembling Nanocomposites

Controlling self-assembly of nanocomposites is a fundamental challenge with exciting implications for next-generation advanced functional materials. Precursors for composites can be generated photochemically, but limited insight in the underlying processes has hindered precise hands-on guidance. In this study, light-controlled nucleation and growth is demonstrated for self-assembling composites according to precise user-defined designs. Carbonate is generated photochemically with UV light to steer the precipitation of nanocomposites of barium carbonate nanocrystals and amorphous silica (BaCO₃ /SiO₂ ). Using a custom-built optical setup, the self-assembly process is controlled by optimizing the photogeneration, diffusion, reaction, and precipitation of the carbonate species, using the radius and intensity of the UV-light irradiated area and reaction temperature. Exploiting this control, nucleation is induced and the contours and individual features of the growing composite are sculpted according to micrometer-defined light patterns. Moreover, moving light patterns are exploited to create a constant carbonate concentration at the growth front to draw lines of nanocomposites with constant width over millimeters with micrometer precision. Light-directed generation of local gradients opens previously unimaginable opportunities for guiding self-assembly into functional materials.

Multi-layered Barium and Strontium Carbonate Structures Induced by the Small Organic Dye Acid Orange 7

The crystal growth behavior induced by small molecular additives is commonly assumed to be far less complex and rich in comparison to that obtained when using macromolecules. Herein, we demonstrate that the small organic molecule Acid Orange 7 can induce a large diversity of multi-layered barium carbonate structures. These multi-layered structures stem from the small molecule imperfectly blocking the fastest growing crystal face. By tuning the balance of growth and inhibition, we control the layer shape and thickness of the structures. Extending these strategies to strontium carbonate enables the precipitation of large quasi two-dimensional multi-layer sheets. Collectively, these findings highlight the unforeseen potential for using small organic molecules to induce the formation of complex inorganic structures.

SrTiO3/Bi4Ti3O12 Nanoheterostructural Platelets Synthesized by Topotactic Epitaxy as Effective Noble-Metal-Free Photocatalysts for pH-Neutral Hydrogen Evolution

Low-temperature hydrothermal epitaxial growth and topochemical conversion (TC) reactions offer unexploited possibilities for the morphological engineering of heterostructural and non-equilibrium shape (photo)catalyst particles. The hydrothermal epitaxial growth of SrTiO3 on Bi4Ti3O12 platelets is studied as a new route for the formation of novel nanoheterostructural SrTiO3/Bi4Ti3O12 platelets at an intermediate stage or (100)-oriented mesocrystalline SrTiO3 nanoplatelets at the completed stage of the TC reaction. The Bi4Ti3O12 platelets act as a source of Ti(OH)62- species and, at the same time, as a substrate for the epitaxial growth of SrTiO3. The dissolution of the Bi4Ti3O12 platelets proceeds faster from the lateral direction, whereas the epitaxial growth of SrTiO3 occurs on both bismuth-oxide-terminated basal surface planes of the Bi4Ti3O12 platelets. In the progress of the TC reaction, the Bi4Ti3O12 platelet is replaced from the lateral ends toward the interior by SrTiO3, while Bi4Ti3O12 is preserved in the core of the heterostructural platelet. Without any support from noble-metal doping or cocatalysts, the SrTiO3/Bi4Ti3O12 platelets show stable and 15 times higher photocatalytic H2 production (1265 μmol·g-1·h-1; solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency = 0.19%) than commercial SrTiO3 nanopowders (81 μmol·g-1·h-1; STH = 0.012%) in pH-neutral water/methanol solutions. A plausible Z scheme is proposed to describe the charge-transfer mechanism during the photocatalysis.

Heterogeneous Nucleation and Growth of CaCO3 on Calcite (104) and Aragonite (110) Surfaces: Implications for the Formation of Abiogenic Carbonate Cements in the Ocean

Although near-surface seawater is supersaturated with CaCO3, only a minor part of it is abiogenic (e.g., carbonate cements). The possible reason for such a phenomenon has attracted much attention in the past decades. Substrate effects on the heterogeneous nucleation and growth of CaCO3 at various Mg2+/Ca2+ ratios may contribute to the understanding of the origin of abiogenic CaCO3 cements. Here, we used in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy to study the heterogeneous nucleation and growth of CaCO3 on both calcite (104) and aragonite (110) surfaces. The results show that (1) calcite spiral growth occurs on calcite (104) surfaces by monomer-by-monomer addition; (2) the aggregative growth of aragonite appears on aragonite (110) surfaces through a substrate-controlled oriented attachment (OA) along the [001] direction, followed by the formation of elongated columnar aragonite; and (3) Mg2+ inhibits the crystallization of both calcite and aragonite without impacting on crystallization pathways. These findings disclose that calcite and aragonite substrates determine the crystallization pathways, while the Mg2+/Ca2+ ratios control the growth rate of CaCO3, indicating that both types of CaCO3 substrate in shallow sediments and aqueous Mg2+/Ca2+ ratios constrain the deposition of abiogenic CaCO3 cements in the ocean.

Tuning the Superhydrophobic Properties of Hierarchical Nano-microstructural Silica Biomorph Arrays Grown at Triphasic Interfaces

The three-dimensional hierarchical morphology of surfaces greatly affects the wettability, absorption and microfabrication properties of their hybrid materials, however few scalable methods exist that controls simultaneously complex geometric shape and spatial scattered location and their physical properties tuned. Consequently, this report describes a synthetic strategy that enables the position of well-ordered biomorph nano-microstructures on hydrophobic surfaces to be precisely controlled. The hierarchical architecture can be accurately positioned on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surfaces in an unprecedented level by leveraging a solid/liquid/gas triphase dynamic reaction diffusion system strategy. The effect of salt concentrations, pH, CO₂ levels, temperature and substrate patterning on this self-assembly process has been investigated, enabling protocols to be devised that enables the hydrophobic properties of the hierarchically assembled multiscale microstructures to be tuned as required. This combined top-down/bottom-up approach can be used to produce composites with outstanding hydrophobicity properties, affording superhydrophobic materials that are capable of retaining water droplets on their surfaces, even when the material is inverted by 180°, with a wide range of potential applications in oil/water separation technology and for selective cell recognition in biological systems.

Emergence of chirality and structural complexity in single crystals at the molecular and morphological levels

Naturally occurring single crystals having a multidomain morphology are a counterintuitive phenonomon: the macroscopic appearance is expected to follow the symmetry of the unit cell. Growing such crystals in the lab is a great challenge, especially from organic molecules. We achieve here uniform metallo-organic crystals that exhibit single crystallinity with apparently distinct domains and chirality. The chirality is present at both the molecular and macroscopic levels, although only achiral elements are used. "Yo-yo"-like structures having opposite helical handedness evolve from initially formed seemingly achiral cylinders. This non-polyhedral morphology coexists with a continuous coordination network forming homochiral channels. This work sheds light on the enigmatic aspects of fascinating crystallization processes occurring in biological mineralization. Our findings open up opportunities to generate new porous and hierarchical chiral materials.

Enhanced biomass and lipid production of Neochloris oleoabundans under high light conditions by anisotropic nature of light-splitting CaCO3 crystal

The aim of this work was to study the anisotropic effect of crystalline CaCO₃ nanoparticles (CN)-driven multiple refraction/scattering from the CN-coated agglomerated cells on the rate of photosynthesis and the product yield under high light conditions in the freshwater microalgae Neochloris oleoabundans. The CN-coating via biomineralization significantly improved the biomass and lipid production of N. oleoabundans during second stage of autotrophic induction by sustaining relatively high rate of photosynthesis at high irradiance using the multiple-splitting effect of the anisotropic polymorphism. The CN were successfully produced, adsorbed and grown on the external cells under conditions of mild alkalinity (pH 7.5-8.0), mild CaCl₂ concentration (0.05 M) and under nitrogen starvation with strong light (400 µE m^-2 s^-1). Consequently, lipid content and productivity of N. oleoabundans cells cultured with 0.05 M CaCl₂ increased by 18.4% and 31.5%, respectively, compared to the cells cultured with 0.05 M CaCl₂ and acetazolamide to inhibit calcification.

Organic-mineral interfacial chemistry drives heterogeneous nucleation of Sr-rich (Ba x , Sr1-x )SO4 from undersaturated solution

Sr-bearing marine barite [(Ba _x , Sr_1-x )SO₄] cycling has been widely used to reconstruct geochemical evolutions of paleoenvironments. However, an understanding of barite precipitation in the ocean, which is globally undersaturated with respect to barite, is missing. Moreover, the reason for the occurrence of higher Sr content in marine barites than expected for classical crystal growth processes remains unknown. Field data analyses suggested that organic molecules may regulate the formation and composition of marine barites; however, the specific organic-mineral interactions are unclear. Using in situ grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS), size and total volume evolutions of barite precipitates on organic films were characterized. The results show that barite forms on organic films from undersaturated solutions. Moreover, from a single supersaturated solution with respect to barite, Sr-rich barite nanoparticles formed on organics, while micrometer-size Sr-poor barites formed in bulk solutions. Ion adsorption experiments showed that organic films can enrich cation concentrations in the adjacent solution, thus increasing the local supersaturation and promoting barite nucleation on organic films, even when the bulk solution was undersaturated. The Sr enrichment in barites formed on organic films was found to be controlled by solid-solution nucleation rates; instead, the Sr-poor barite formation in bulk solution was found to be controlled by solid-solution growth rates. This study provides a mechanistic explanation for Sr-rich marine barite formation and offers insights for understanding and controlling the compositions of solid solutions by separately tuning their nucleation and growth rates via the unique chemistry of solution-organic interfaces.
