Proton Conducting Membranes with Molecular Self Assemblies and Ionic Channels for Efficient Proton Conduction

Supramolecular assemblies are vital for biological systems. This phenomenon in artificial materials is directly related to their numerous properties and their performance. Here, a simple approach to supramolecular assemblies is employed to fabricate highly efficient proton conducting molecular wires for fuel cell applications. Small molecule-based molecular assembly leading to a discotic columnar architecture is achieved, simultaneously with proton conduction that can take place efficiently in the absence of water, which otherwise is very difficult to obtain in interconnected ionic channels. High boiling point proton facilitators are incorporated into these columns possessing central ionic channels, thereby increasing the conduction multifold. Larger and asymmetrical proton facilitators disintegrated the self-assembly, resulting in low proton conduction efficiency. The highest conductivity was found to be approaching 10^-2 S/cm for the molecular wires in an anhydrous state, which is ascribed to the continuous network of hydrogen bonds in which protons can hop between with a lower energy barrier. The molecular wires with ionic channels presented here have potential as an alternative to proton conductors operating under anhydrous conditions at both low and high temperatures.

Entropic control of nanoparticle self-assembly through confinement

Entropy can be the sole driving force for the construction and regulation of ordered structures of soft matter systems. Specifically, under confinement, the entropic penalty could induce enhanced entropic effects which potentially generate visually ordered structures. Therefore, spatial confinement or a crowding environment offers an important approach to control entropy effects in these systems. Here, we review how spatial confinement-mediated entropic effects accurately and even dynamically control the self-assembly of nanoscale objects into ordered structures, focusing on our efforts towards computer simulations and theoretical analysis. First, we introduce the basic principle of entropic ordering through confinement. We then introduce the applications of this concept to various systems containing nanoparticles, including polymer nanocomposites, biological macromolecular systems and macromolecular colloids. Finally, the future directions and challenges for tailoring nanoparticle organization through spatial confinement-mediated entropic effects are detailed. We expect that this review could stimulate further efforts in the fundamental research on the relationship between confinement and entropy and in the applications of this concept for designer nanomaterials.

The C36 Laves phase in diblock polymer melts

The C14 and C15 Laves phases form as micelle packing structures in many types of soft matter, but the related C36 phase, which consists of alternating C14-type and C15-type layers, has not been observed in any such system. To understand this absence in the context of diblock polymers, we used self-consistent field theory to relate the morphology and energetics of C36 to other known mesophases. Two case studies were conducted: blends of AB diblock polymers with A homopolymers (where A forms the micelle core), in which C14 and C15 have stability windows, and neat AB diblock melts, in which Laves phases are metastable. Laves phases exhibit nearly identical micelle morphologies and nearly degenerate free energies, with the free energy of C36 being a near-perfect bisector of the C14 and C15 free energies in all cases, revealing an intrinsic symmetry in free energy that is attributed solely to the structural relationship between the phases in which the packing of C36 is intermediate between C14 and C15. Based on this connection between structure and free energy, C36 is thus not expected to form in flexible diblock polymers, since C14 and C15 can always form instead via facile mass transfer.
