Interfacial Spinel Local Interlocking Strategy Toward Structural Integrity in P3 Oxide Cathodes

P3-layered transition oxide cathodes have garnered considerable attention owing to their high initial capacity, rapid Na+ kinetics, and less energy consumption during the synthesis process. Despite these merits, their practical application is hindered by the substantial capacity degradation resulting from unfavorable structural transformations, Mn dissolution and migration. In this study, we systematically investigated the failure mechanisms of P3 cathodes, encompassing Mn dissolution, migration, and the irreversible P3-O3' phase transition, culminating in severe structural collapse. To address these challenges, we proposed an interfacial spinel local interlocking strategy utilizing P3/spinel intergrowth oxide as a proof-of-concept material. As a result, P3/spinel intergrowth oxide cathodes demonstrated enhanced cycling performance. The effectiveness of suppressing Mn migration and maintaining local structure of interfacial spinel local interlocking strategy was validated through depth-etching X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and in situ synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction. This interfacial spinel local interlocking engineering strategy presents a promising avenue for the development of advanced cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Regulation of anion-Na+ coordination chemistry in electrolyte solvates for low-temperature sodium-ion batteries

High-performance sodium storage at low temperature is urgent with the increasingly stringent demand for energy storage systems. However, the aggravated capacity loss is induced by the sluggish interfacial kinetics, which originates from the interfacial Na+ desolvation. Herein, all-fluorinated anions with ultrahigh electron donicity, trifluoroacetate (TFA-), are introduced into the diglyme (G2)-based electrolyte for the anion-reinforced solvates in a wide temperature range. The unique solvation structure with TFA- anions and decreased G2 molecules occupying the inner sheath accelerates desolvation of Na+ to exhibit decreased desolvation energy from 4.16 to 3.49 kJ mol-1 and 24.74 to 16.55 kJ mol-1 beyond and below -20 °C, respectively, compared with that in 1.0 M NaPF6-G2. These enable the cell of Na||Na3V2(PO4)3 to deliver 60.2% of its room-temperature capacity and high capacity retention of 99.2% after 100 cycles at -40 °C. This work highlights regulation of solvation chemistry for highly stable sodium-ion batteries at low temperature.

Heavily Tungsten-Doped Sodium Thioantimonate Solid-State Electrolytes with Exceptionally Low Activation Energy for Ionic Diffusion

A strategy for modifying the structure of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) to reduce the cation diffusion activation energy is presented. Two heavily W-doped sodium thioantimonate SSEs, Na_2.895 W_0.3 Sb_0.7 S₄ and Na_2.7 W_0.3 Sb_0.7 S₄ are designed, both exhibiting exceptionally low activation energy and enhanced room temperature (RT) ionic conductivity; 0.09 eV, 24.2 mS/cm and 0.12 eV, 14.5 mS/cm. At -15 °C the Na_2.895 W_0.3 Sb_0.7 S₄ displays a total ionic conductivity of 5.5 mS/cm. The 30 % W content goes far beyond the 10-12 % reported in the prior studies, and results in novel pseudo-cubic or orthorhombic structures. Calculations reveal that these properties result from a combination of multiple diffusion mechanisms, including vacancy defects, strongly correlated modes and excessive Na-ions. An all-solid-state battery (ASSB) using Na_2.895 W_0.3 Sb_0.7 S₄ as the primary SSE and a sodium sulfide (Na₂ S) cathode achieves a reversible capacity of 400 mAh g^-1 .

Revealing the role of the cathode-electrolyte interface on solid-state batteries

Interfaces have crucial, but still poorly understood, roles in the performance of secondary solid-state batteries. Here, using crystallographically oriented and highly faceted thick cathodes, we directly assess the impact of cathode crystallography and morphology on the long-term performance of solid-state batteries. The controlled interface crystallography, area and microstructure of these cathodes enables an understanding of interface instabilities unknown (hidden) in conventional thin-film and composite solid-state electrodes. A generic and direct correlation between cell performance and interface stability is revealed for a variety of both lithium- and sodium-based cathodes and solid electrolytes. Our findings highlight that minimizing interfacial area, rather than its expansion as is the case in conventional composite cathodes, is key to both understanding the nature of interface instabilities and improving cell performance. Our findings also point to the use of dense and thick cathodes as a way of increasing the energy density and stability of solid-state batteries.
