Abstract
The escalating global demand for sustainable manufacturing, motivated by concerns over energy conservation and carbon footprints, encounters challenges due to insufficient renewable materials and arduous fabrication procedures to fulfill specific requirements in medical and healthcare systems. Here, biosafe pollen cryogel is engineered as effective hemostats without additional harmful crosslinkers to treat deep noncompressible wounds. A straightforward and low-energy approach is involved in forming stable macroporous cryogel, benefiting from the unique micro-hierarchical structures and chemical components of non-allergenic plant pollen. It is demonstrated that the pollen cryogel exhibits rapid water/blood-triggered shape-memory properties within 2 s. Owing to their inherent nano/micro hierarchical structure and abundant chemical functional groups on the pollen surface, the pollen cryogel shows effective hemostatic performance in a mouse liver penetration model, which is easily removed after usage. Overall, the self-crosslinking pollen cryogel in this work pioneers a framework of potential clinical applications for the first-hand treatment on deep noncompressible wounds.

Abstract
Plant tissues are constructed as composite material systems of stiff cellulose microfibers reinforcing a soft matrix. Thus, they comprise smart and multifunctional structures that can change shape in response to external stimuli due to asymmetrical fiber alignment and possess robust mechanical properties. Herein, we demonstrate the biomimetics of the plant material system using silk fiber-reinforced alginate hydrogel matrix biocomposites. We fabricate single and bilamellar biocomposites with different fiber orientations. The mechanical behavior of the biocomposites is nonlinear, with large deformations, as in plant tissues. In general, the bilamellar system shows increased modulus, strain UTS, and toughness compared to the single-lamellar system for most of the tested orientations. Overall, the biocomposites present a wide range of elastic modulus values (3.0 ± 0.6-104.7 ± 11.3 MPa) and UTS values (0.23 ± 0.04-12.5 ± 2.0 MPa). The bilamellar biocomposites demonstrated shape-transforming abilities with diverse morphing modes, emulating different plant tissues and creating complex shape-morphing structures. These multifunctional biocomposites possess tunable and robust mechanical properties, controllable shape-morphing deformations, and the ability to self-controlled encapsulation, grip, and release objects. By harnessing biomimetic principles, these soft, smart, and multifunctional materials hold potential applications spanning from soft robotics, medicine, and tissue engineering to sensing and drug delivery.

Abstract
Soft actuators with stimuli-responsive and reversible deformations have shown great promise in soft robotics. However, some challenges remain in existing actuators, such as the materials involved derived from nonrenewable resources, complex and nonscalable preparation methods, and incapability of complex and programmable deformation. Here, a biobased ink based on cuttlefish ink nanoparticles (CINPs) and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) was developed, allowing for the preparation of biodegradable patterned actuators by direct ink writing technology. The hybrid CNF/CINP ink displays good rheological properties, allowing it to be accurately printed on a variety of flexible substrates. A bilayer actuator was developed by printing an ink layer on a biodegradable poly(lactic acid) film using extrusion-based 3D printing technology, which exhibits reversible and large bending behavior under the stimuli of humidity and light. Furthermore, programmable and reversible folding and coiling deformations in response to stimuli have been achieved by adjusting the ink patterns. This work offers a fast, scalable, and cost-effective strategy for the development of biodegradable patterned actuators with programmable shape-morphing.

Abstract
Plant leaves, whose remarkable ability for morphogenesis results in a wide range of petal and leaf shapes in response to environmental cues, have inspired scientific studies as well as the development of engineering structures and devices. Although some typical shape changes in plants and the driving force for such shape evolution have been extensively studied, there remain many poorly understood mechanisms, characteristics, and principles associated with the vast array of shape formation of plant leaves in nature. Here, we present a comprehensive study that combines experiment, theory, and numerical simulations of one such topic-the mechanics and mechanisms of corrugated leaf folding induced by differential shrinking in Rhapis excelsa. Through systematic measurements of the dehydration process in sectioned leaves, we identify a linear correlation between change in the leaf-folding angle and water loss. Building on experimental findings, we develop a generalized model that provides a scaling relationship for water loss in sectioned leaves. Furthermore, our study reveals that corrugated folding induced by dehydration in R. excelsa leaves is achieved by the deformation of a structural architecture-the "hinge" cells. Utilizing such connections among structure, morphology, environmental stimuli, and mechanics, we fabricate several biomimetic machines, including a humidity sensor and morphing devices capable of folding in response to dehydration. The mechanisms of corrugated folding in R. excelsa identified in this work provide a general understanding of the interactions between plant leaves and water. The actuation mechanisms identified in this study also provide insights into the rational design of soft machines.

Abstract
The hierarchical design of the toe pad surface in geckos and its reversible adhesiveness have inspired material scientists for many years. Micro- and nano-patterned surfaces with impressive adhesive performance have been developed to mimic gecko's properties. While the adhesive performance achieved in some examples has surpassed living counterparts, the durability of the fabricated surfaces is limited and the capability to self-renew and restore function-inherent to biological systems-is unimaginable. Here the morphogenesis of gecko setae using skin samples from the Bibron´s gecko (Chondrodactylus bibronii) is studied. Gecko setae develop as specialized apical differentiation structures at a distinct cell-cell layer interface within the skin epidermis. A primary role for F-actin and microtubules as templating structural elements is necessary for the development of setae's hierarchical morphology, and a stabilization role of keratins and corneus beta proteins is identified. Setae grow from single cells in a bottom layer protruding into four neighboring cells in the upper layer. The resulting multicellular junction can play a role during shedding by facilitating fracture of the cell-cell interface and release of the high aspect ratio setae. The results contribute to the understanding of setae regeneration and may inspire future concepts to bioengineer self-renewable patterned adhesive surfaces.

Abstract
Shape transformation, a key mechanism for organismal survival and adaptation, has gained importance in developing synthetic shape-shifting systems with diverse applications ranging from robotics to bioengineering. However, designing and controlling microscale shape-shifting materials remains a fundamental challenge in various actuation modalities. As materials and structures are scaled down to the microscale, they often exhibit size-dependent characteristics, and the underlying physical mechanisms can be significantly affected or rendered ineffective. Additionally, surface forces such as van der Waals forces and electrostatic forces become dominant at the microscale, resulting in stiction and adhesion between small structures, making them fracture and more difficult to deform. Furthermore, despite various actuation approaches, acoustics have received limited attention despite their potential advantages. Here, we introduce "SonoTransformer," the acoustically activated micromachine that delivers shape transformability using preprogrammed soft hinges with different stiffnesses. When exposed to an acoustic field, these hinges concentrate sound energy through intensified oscillation and provide the necessary force and torque for the transformation of the entire micromachine within milliseconds. We have created machine designs to predetermine the folding state, enabling precise programming and customization of the acoustic transformation. Additionally, we have shown selective shape transformable microrobots by adjusting acoustic power, realizing high degrees of control and functional versatility. Our findings open new research avenues in acoustics, physics, and soft matter, offering new design paradigms and development opportunities in robotics, metamaterials, adaptive optics, flexible electronics, and microtechnology.

Abstract
Untethered soft robots have attracted growing attention due to their safe interaction with living organisms, good flexibility, and accurate remote control. However, the materials involved are often nonbiodegradable or are derived from nonrenewable resources, leading to serious environmental problems. Here, we report a biomass-based multistimuli-responsive actuator based on cuttlefish ink nanoparticles (CINPs), wood-derived cellulose nanofiber (CNF), and bioderived polylactic acid (PLA). Taking advantage of the good photothermal conversion performance and exceptionally hygroscopic sensitivity of the CINPs/CNF composite (CICC) layer and the opposite thermally induced deformation behavior between the CICC layer and PLA layer, the soft actuator exhibits reversible deformation behaviors under near-infrared (NIR) light, humidity, and temperature stimuli, respectively. By introducing patterned or alignment structures and combining them with a macroscopic reassembly strategy, diverse programmable shape-morphing from 2D to 3D such as letter-shape, coiling, self-folding, and more sophisticated 3D deformations have been demonstrated. All of these deformations can be successfully predicted by finite element analysis (FEA) . Furthermore, this actuator has been further applied as an untethered grasping robot, weightlifting robot, and climbing robot capable of climbing a vertical pole. Such actuators consisting entirely of biodegradable materials will offer a sustainable future for untethered soft robots.

Abstract
Biocompatible and morphable hydrogels capable of multimode reprogrammable, and adaptive shape changes are potentially useful for diverse biomedical applications. However, existing morphable systems often rely on complicated structural designs involving cumbersome and energy-intensive fabrication processes. Here, we report a simple electric-field-activated protein network migration strategy to reversibly program silk-protein hydrogels with controllable and reprogrammable complex shape transformations. The application of a low electric field enables the convergence of net negatively charged protein cross-linking networks toward the anode (isoelectric point plane) due to the pH gradient generated in the process, facilitating the formation of a gradient network structure and systems suitable for three-dimensional shape change. These tunable protein networks can be reprogrammed or permanently fixed by control of the polymorphic transitions. We show that these morphing hydrogels are capable of conformally interfacing with biological tissues by programming the shape changes and a bimorph structure consisting of aligned carbon nanotube multilayers and the silk hydrogels was assembled to illustrate utility as an implantable bioelectronic device for localized low-voltage electrical stimulation of the sciatic nerve in a rabbit.

Abstract
Spores and pollens refer to the reproductive cells of seed plants and asexually reproducing sporophytes, exhibiting a natural core-shell structure and exquisite surface morphology. They possess extraordinary dimensional homogeneity, porosity, amphiphilicity and adhesion. Their sporopollenin exine layer endows them with chemically stable, UV resistant, and biocompatible properties, which can also be facilely functionalized due to sufficient groups on the surface. The unique characteristics of spores and pollens have facilitated a wide range of applications in drug carriers, biological imaging, food science, microrobotics, environmental purification, flexible electronics, cell scaffolds, 3D printing materials and biological detection. This review showcases the common structural composition and physicochemical properties of spores and pollens, describes the extraction and processing methods, and summarizes the recent research on their applications in various fields. Following these sections, this review analyzes the existing challenges in spores and pollen research and provides a future outlook.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this work, natural club moss (Lycopodium clavatum, LC) spores with a porous surface morphology and highly uniform size distribution were engineered into controlled-release microvehicles for pesticide delivery. As a proof of concept, a widely used fungicide, fluazinam (FLU), was successfully loaded into LC spores and then modified with different amounts of CaCO3 (CaC) to extend the efficacy duration of FLU. Significantly, as the control target of FLU, clubroot disease is a worldwide destructive disease of cruciferous crops, and its development is favored by acidic soils and can be suppressed at high Ca concentrations. RESULTS Fabricated FLU@LC-CaC microcapsules, FLU loading and CaCO3 deposition were systematically characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The as-prepared FLU@LC-CaC microcapsules showed sustained-release behaviors and were potentially able to supplement the Ca concentration in acidic environments. This approach synergistically enhanced in vivo bioactivity for the on-demand control of clubroot disease. An in vivo bioassay revealed that the control efficacy of FLU@LC-CaC against clubroot disease in pak choi (Brassica chinensis) (66.4%) was 1.7-fold higher than that of a commercial FLU suspension concentrate (38.2%) over the course of the cultivation period (35 days). CONCLUSIONS This work provides new ideas not only for developing eco-friendly and scalable microvehicles for pesticide delivery based on natural sporopollen, but also for unconventional research perspectives in on-demand pest management based on their occurrence characteristics. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Graphene remains of great interest in biomedical applications because of biocompatibility. Diseases relating to human senses interfere with life satisfaction and happiness. Therefore, the restoration by artificial organs or sensory devices may bring a bright future by the recovery of senses in patients. In this review, we update the most recent progress in graphene based sensors for mimicking human senses such as artificial retina for image sensors, artificial eardrums, gas sensors, chemical sensors, and tactile sensors. The brain-like processors are discussed based on conventional transistors as well as memristor related neuromorphic computing. The brain-machine interface is introduced for providing a single pathway. Besides, the artificial muscles based on graphene are summarized in the means of actuators in order to react to the physical world. Future opportunities remain for elevating the performances of human-like sensors and their clinical applications.

Abstract
Aerial seeding can quickly cover large and physically inaccessible areas1 to improve soil quality and scavenge residual nitrogen in agriculture2, and for postfire reforestation3-5 and wildland restoration6,7. However, it suffers from low germination rates, due to the direct exposure of unburied seeds to harsh sunlight, wind and granivorous birds, as well as undesirable air humidity and temperature1,8,9. Here, inspired by Erodium seeds10-14, we design and fabricate self-drilling seed carriers, turning wood veneer into highly stiff (about 4.9 GPa when dry, and about 1.3 GPa when wet) and hygromorphic bending or coiling actuators with an extremely large bending curvature (1,854 m-1), 45 times larger than the values in the literature15-18. Our three-tailed carrier has an 80% drilling success rate on flat land after two triggering cycles, due to the beneficial resting angle (25°-30°) of its tail anchoring, whereas the natural Erodium seed's success rate is 0%. Our carriers can carry payloads of various sizes and contents including biofertilizers and plant seeds as large as those of whitebark pine, which are about 11 mm in length and about 72 mg. We compare data from experiments and numerical simulation to elucidate the curvature transformation and actuation mechanisms to guide the design and optimization of the seed carriers. Our system will improve the effectiveness of aerial seeding to relieve agricultural and environmental stresses, and has potential applications in energy harvesting, soft robotics and sustainable buildings.

Abstract
Smart surfaces with superhydrophobic/superhydrophilic characteristics can be controlled by external stimuli, such as temperature. These transitions are attributed to the molecular-level conformation of the grafted polymer chains due to the varied interactions at the interface. Here, tunable surfaces were prepared by grafting two well-known thermo-responsive polymers, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and poly(oligoethylene glycol)methyl ether acrylate (POEGMA188) onto micro-pollen particles of uniform morphology and roughness. Direct Raman spectra and thermodynamic analyses revealed that above the lower critical solution temperature, the bonded and free water at the interface partially transformed to intermediate water that disrupted the "water cage" surrounding the hydrophobic groups. The increased amounts of intermediate water produced hydrogen bonding networks that were less ordered around the polymer grafted microparticles, inducing a weaker binding interaction at the interface and a lower tendency to wet the surface. Combining the roughness factor, the bulk surface assembled by distinct polymer-grafted-pollen microparticles (PNIPAM or POEGMA188) could undergo a different wettability transition for liquid under air, water, and oil. This work identifies new perspectives on the interfacial water structure variation at a multiple length scale, which contributed to the temperature-dependent surface wettability transition. It offers inspiration for the application of thermo-responsive surface to liquid-gated multiphase separation, water purification and harvesting, biomedical devices, and printing.

Abstract
Although paperless technologies are becoming ubiquitous, paper and paper-based materials remain one of the most widely used resources, predicted to exceed an annual total of 460 million metric tons by 2030. Given the environmental challenges, deleterious impact on natural resources, and waste associated with conventional wood-based paper manufacturing, developing more sustainable strategies to source, produce, and recycle paper from natural materials is essential. Here, the development and production of reusable and recyclable paper are reported. This approach offers a pathway for easily producing natural pollen grains via ecofriendly, economical, scalable, and low-energy fabrication routes. It is demonstrated that the pollen-based paper exhibits high-quality printability, readability, and erasability, enabling its reuse. Based on the pH-responsive morphological responses of engineered pollen materials, a method for hygro stable printing and on-demand unprinting is presented. The reusability of the pollen paper renders it more advantageous than conventional single-print wood-based paper. This study thus provides possible pathways to utilize non-allergenic pollen, which is renewable and naturally abundant, as a sustainable source of reusable paper. While this work primarily deals with paper, the methods described here can be extended to produce other products such as cartons and containers for the storage and transport of liquid and solid materials.

Abstract
Soft actuators that respond to external stimuli like moisture, magnetism, light, and temperature have received tremendous attention owing to their promising potential in many frontier applications, including smart switches, soft robots, sensors, and artificial muscles. However, most of the conventional actuators can only be triggered by a solo stimulus and demand advanced manufacturing techniques that utilize expensive, hazardous, and synthetic raw materials. Herein, we design and fabricate a multiple stimuli-responsive actuator using graphene oxide, Fe3O4 nanoparticles, and tapioca starch via a water evaporation-induced self-assembly method. The resultant hybrid actuator exhibits a bending speed of ∼72° s-1 upon moisture exposure. Moreover, it can perform clockwise and counterclockwise rotations, linear motion, and magnetic object capture by regulating a magnetic field. As representative examples, the actuator is used to fabricate various smart devices such as smart curtains, biomimetic structures, and a smart gripper that undergo complex and consecutive motion under the influence of multiple stimuli.
