Optical dipole-induced anisotropic growth of semiconductors: A facile strategy toward chiral and complex nanostructures

Trace-Amount Detection of Chiral Molecules Based on Plasmonic Racemic Arrays Fabricated via Direct Laser Writing

Superchiral fields, supported by chiral plasmonic structures, have shown outstanding performance for chiral molecule sensing via enhanced chiral light-matter interaction. However, this sensing capability cannot fully reveal the chiral origin of the molecules as the chiroptic response of the molecules is intertwined with the chiroptic response of the chiral plasmonic nanostructures, which can potentially be excluded by using a plasmonic racemic mixture. Such a plasmonic racemic mixture is not easily attainable, as it normally requires complex fabrication and expensive instrumentation, whose structural fineness is limited by the fabrication precision. Here, we demonstrate trace-amount chiral molecule detection with plasmonic racemic arrays fabricated by direct laser writing with vector beams, which is facile, cost-effective, and highly controllable. The racemic arrays present no inherent circular differential scattering but a large local superchiral field, which reflects the intrinsic chiral features of the chiral molecules. They are further applied to discriminate enantiomers of phenylalanine with a limit of detection (LOD) of 10.0 ± 2.8 μM, which is an order of magnitude smaller than the LOD of conventional circular dichroism spectroscopy. The strong local superchiral field provided by the plasmonic racemic arrays enlightens the design of a superior sensing platform, which holds promising applications for biomedical detection and enantioselective drug development.

Colloidal Chiral Carbon Dots: An Emerging System for Chiroptical Applications

Chiral CDots (c-CDots) not only inherit those merits from CDots but also exhibit chiral effects in optical, electric, and bio-properties. Therefore, c-CDots have received significant interest from a wide range of research communities including chemistry, physics, biology, and device engineers. They have already made decent progress in terms of synthesis, together with the exploration of their optical properties and applications. In this review, the chiroptical properties and chirality origin in extinction circular dichroism (ECD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) of c-CDots is briefly discussed. Then, the synthetic strategies of c-CDots is summarized, including one-pot synthesis, post-functionalization of CDots with chiral ligands, and assembly of CDots into chiral architectures with soft chiral templates. Afterward, the chiral effects on the applications of c-CDots are elaborated. Research domains such as drug delivery, bio- or chemical sensing, regulation of enzyme-like catalysis, and others are covered. Finally, the perspective on the challenges associated with the synthetic strategies, understanding the origin of chirality, and potential applications is provided. This review not only discusses the latest developments of c-CDots but also helps toward a better understanding of the structure-property relationship along with their respective applications.

Theoretical Study of Strong Coupling between Molecular Shells and Chiral Plasmons of Gold Nanoparticles Helices

Chiral plasmonic nanostructures can produce strong chiral optical responses and have potential applications in photonics. Experimentally, metallic nanoparticle helices have been synthesized to achieve strong chiral responses. Strong coupling effects between the quantum emitters and the plasmon have attracted significant attention in the past decade and have been recently extended to the chiral plasmon of nanostructures. However, the strong coupling between molecules and metallic nanosphere helices has not been reported yet. In this article we study theoretically such an effect and examine the modulation of chiral and coupling effects by illumination light and molecular layer thickness. Our study may guide further experimental studies.

Electromagnetic heating-assisted metasurface for stably tunable, fast-responding chiroptics

Herein, a graphene-dielectric metasurface with the function of stably tunable and fast responding on the chiroptics is theoretically investigated and numerically demonstrated. Via utilizing the intrinsic thermo-optical effect of the silicon, the circular dichroism (CD) peak position can be linearly scaled with a spectral sensitivity of up to 0.06 nm/K by artificially adjusting the temperature. Moreover, a perfectly adjusting manipulation with a wavelength shift of full width at half maximum for the resonant spectrum and the simultaneously maintained CD values can be realized by a slight temperature variation of ∼0.8 K. Additionally, we take a graphene layer as the heating source to actually demonstrate the ultra-fast thermal generation. Applying an input voltage of 2 V to the graphene with only 10 µs can rapidly increase the metasurface temperature of up to 550 K. Such performances hold the platform with wide applications in functional chiroptics and optoelectronics.

Chiral photonic crystals from sphere packing

Inspired by recent developments in self-assembled chiral nanostructures, we have explored the possibility of using spherical particles packed in cylinders as building blocks for chiral photonic crystals. In particular, we focused on an array of parallel cylinders arranged in a perfect triangular lattice, each containing an identical densest sphere packing structure. Despite the non-chirality of both the spheres and cylinders, the self-assembled system can exhibit chirality due to spontaneous symmetry breaking during the assembly process. We have investigated the circular dichroism effects of the system and have found that, for both perfect electric conductor and dielectric spheres, the system can display dual-polarization photonic band gaps for circularly polarized light at normal incidence along the axis of the helix. We have also examined how the polarization band gap size depends on the dielectric constant of the spheres and the packing fraction of the cylinders. Furthermore, we have explored the effects of non-ideality and found that the polarization gap persists even in the presence of imperfections and heterogeneity. Our study suggests that a cluster formed by spheres self-assembling inside parallel cylinders with appropriate material parameters can be a promising approach to creating chiral photonic crystals.

Polarization-directed growth of spiral nanostructures by laser direct writing with vector beams

Chirality is pivotal in nature which attracts wide research interests from all disciplines and creating chiral matter is one of the central themes for chemists and material scientists. Despite of significant efforts, a simple, cost-effective and general method that can produce different kinds of chiral metamaterials with high regularity and tailorability is still demanding but greatly missing. Here, we introduce polarization-directed growth of spiral nanostructures via vector beams, which is simple, tailorable and generally applicable to both plasmonic and dielectric materials. The self-aligned near field enhances the photochemical growth along the polarization, which is crucial for the oriented growth. The obtained plasmonic chiral nanostructures present prominent optical activity with a g-factor up to 0.4, which can be tuned by adjusting the spirality of the vector beams. These spiral plasmonic nanostructures can be used for the sensing of different chiral enantiomers. The dielectric chiral metasurfaces can also be formed in arrays of sub-mm scale, which exhibit a g-factor over 0.1. However, photoluminescence of chiral cadmium sulfide presents a very weak luminescence g-factor with the excitation of linearly polarized light. A number of applications can be envisioned with these chiral nanostructures such as chiral sensing, chiral separation and chiral information storage.
