Shortwave infrared (SWIR, 1000-1700 nm) absorbing and emitting dyes are needed for infrared diodes and sensors used in a wide variety of industrial and medical applications. Herein, an electron-withdrawing phosphine oxide (P═O) substituted xanthene is coupled with strong indolizine donors to produce a SWIR absorbing (λabs = 1294 nm in DCM) and emitting (λemis = 1450 nm in DCM) dye called PRos1450. The unique properties of this dye are characterized via photophysical, electrochemical, and computational analyses.

Carrier-frequency estimation for digital holograms of phase objects

Accurate estimation of carrier fringe frequency is essential for the demodulation of off-axis digital holograms. The fringe frequency is often associated with the amplitude peak of the cross-term in the two-dimensional Fourier transform of a digital hologram. We point out that this definition of carrier frequency is not valid in general for holograms associated with phase objects. We examine the carrier-envelope representation for digital holograms from the viewpoint of Mandel's criterion [J. Opt. Soc. Am.57, 613 (1967)10.1364/JOSA.57.000613]. An appropriate definition of carrier frequency is observed to be the centroid of the power spectrum associated with the cross term. This definition is shown to apply uniformly to holograms associated with phase objects, is robust to noise, and leads to the smoothest (or least fluctuating) envelope representation for the demodulated object wave. The proposed definition is illustrated with simulated as well as experimentally recorded off-axis holograms.

Intensity correlation holography for remote phase sensing and 3D imaging

Holography is an established technique for measuring the wavefront of optical signals through interferometric combination with a reference wave. Conventionally the integration time of a hologram is limited by the interferometer coherence time, thus making it challenging to prepare holograms of remote objects, especially using weak illumination. Here, we circumvent this limitation by using intensity correlation interferometry. Although the exposure time of individual holograms must be shorter than the interferometer coherence time, we show that any number of randomly phase-shifted holograms can be combined into a single intensity-correlation hologram. In a proof-of-principle experiment, we use this technique to perform phase imaging and 3D reconstruction of an object at a ∼3 m distance using weak illumination and without active phase stabilization.

Quantum enhanced non-interferometric quantitative phase imaging

Quantum entanglement and squeezing have significantly improved phase estimation and imaging in interferometric settings beyond the classical limits. However, for a wide class of non-interferometric phase imaging/retrieval methods vastly used in the classical domain, e.g., ptychography and diffractive imaging, a demonstration of quantum advantage is still missing. Here, we fill this gap by exploiting entanglement to enhance imaging of a pure phase object in a non-interferometric setting, only measuring the phase effect on the free-propagating field. This method, based on the so-called "transport of intensity equation", is quantitative since it provides the absolute value of the phase without prior knowledge of the object and operates in wide-field mode, so it does not need time-consuming raster scanning. Moreover, it does not require spatial and temporal coherence of the incident light. Besides a general improvement of the image quality at a fixed number of photons irradiated through the object, resulting in better discrimination of small details, we demonstrate a clear reduction of the uncertainty in the quantitative phase estimation. Although we provide an experimental demonstration of a specific scheme in the visible spectrum, this research also paves the way for applications at different wavelengths, e.g., X-ray imaging, where reducing the photon dose is of utmost importance.
