Influence of intramolecular hydrogen bonding on the electronic structure of oxymorphone

Simple One-Pot Preparation of a Rapid Response AIE Fluorescent Metal-Organic Framework

Luminogenic materials, particularly those that have turn-on response by sensing the analytes, are highly regarded as optical instruments, sensing material, fluorescent probes, etc. However, most of these materials are only usable in dilute form and often show the self-quenching effect at high concentrations. The use of light-emitting AIE-based materials (aggregation-induced emission) is the solution of this problem. The rigid structure of these active fluorescence ligands, which contains several aromatic rings attached to each other, does not lose its fluorescence properties by increasing the concentration. Unlike other AIE ligands, which have a complex or multistep synthetic route, here, we present a simple one-pot method for in situ synthesis of the AIE ligand and the metal-organic framework (MOF) contained therein. Presence of metal nodes having varied outer-shell electron configurations affects the fluorescence intensity of these materials and, thus, both high and low emissive "turn on" MOFs were readily acquired. Based on the possible interactions between the free nitrogens on the ligand and the phenolic compounds, the MOFs enable highly selective and sensitive detection of phenol derivatives in several seconds with low detection limits (less than 65 nM for 4-aminophenol and 120 nM for phenol) through turn-on emission fluorescence.

An arch-bridge-type fluorophore for bridging the gap between aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE)

Solution and solid dual photoluminescence (PL) molecules fill the substantial gap between ACQ and AIE molecules to explore the mechanism of molecular luminescence in greater detail and to facilitate practical applications. A unique arch-bridge-like thiazolo[5,4-b]thieno[3,2-e]pyridine moiety is obtained as a stator after the rigidification of rotor 1 by intramolecular H-bonding of ortho -OH or -NH2 to afford two classes of solid and solution dual PL molecules. As a typical example, DF5 is dual PL active. Moreover, the large Stokes shift with high dual PL efficiency (ΦF up to 51% in the solid state, 80% in DMF, 74% in DMSO, and 100% in water), together with the good thermal stability (Tm > 200 °C and T05 > 200 °C), make it more practical for promising optoelectronic and biological applications.

New insights in the clastic binding hypothesis for opiate-receptor interactions II: Proton-transfer mechanism

Ab initio (4-31G) molecular orbital calculations were performed on model systems to investigate the proton-transfer version of the clastic binding hypothesis for opiate-receptor interactions. Ammonia was chosen as the model for the nitrogen-containing portion of the opiate molecule, while ammonia and water were chosen as models for the proton acceptor at the receptor. The equilibrium position of a proton situated between the two molecules is found to be determined primarily by the orientation of the proton-donor molecule with some influence also from the other molecule. Misalignments of the lone pairs can significantly alter equilibrium populations when the proton affinities of the two molecules are similar.

Operation of long-range substituent effects in rigid opiates: protonated and unprotonated oxymorphone

The structure of protonated oxymorphone (amine salt) was determined by an X-ray crystallographic study. Significant differences were found with the previously determined structure of unprotonated oxymorphone (free base). Upon protonation on nitrogen, an elongation of the N-C bound occurred, accompanied by subtle changes in bond lengths and angles distant from the site of protonation. These changes in geometry are interpreted as a reflection of long-range substituent effects.
