No effect of age on spatial interval discrimination as a function of eccentricity or separation

The effect of aging on crowded letter recognition in the peripheral visual field

PURPOSE

Crowding describes the increased difficulty in identifying a target object when it is surrounded by nearby objects (flankers). A recent study investigated the effect of age on visual crowding and found equivocal results: Although crowded visual acuity was worse in older participants, crowding expressed as a ratio did not change with age. However, the spatial extent of crowding is a better index of crowding effects and remains unknown. In the present study, we used established psychophysical methods to characterize the effect of age on visual crowding (magnitude and extent) in a letter recognition task.

METHODS

Letter recognition thresholds were determined for three different flanker separations in 54 adults (aged 18-76 years) with normal vision. Additionally, the spatial extent of crowding was established by measuring spacing thresholds: the flanker-to-target separation required to produce a given reduction in performance. Uncrowded visual acuity, crowded visual acuity, and spacing thresholds were expressed as a function of age, avoiding arbitrary categorization of young and old participants.

RESULTS

Our results showed that uncrowded and crowded visual acuities do not change significantly as a function of age. Furthermore, spacing thresholds did not change with age and approximated Bouma's law (half eccentricity).

CONCLUSIONS

These data show that crowding in adults is unaffected by senescence and provide additional evidence for distinct neural mechanisms mediating surround suppression and visual crowding, since the former shows a significant age effect. Finally, our data suggest that the well-documented age-related decline in peripheral reading ability is not due to age-related changes in visual crowding.

The effects of ageing and visual field loss on pointing to visual targets

Purpose

To investigate the effect of ageing on visuomotor function and subsequently evaluate the effect of visual field loss on such function in older adults.

Methods

Two experiments were performed: 1) to determine the effect of ageing on visual localisation and subsequent pointing precision, and 2) to determine the effect of visual field loss on these outcome measures. For Experiment 1, we measured visual localisation and pointing precision radially at visual eccentricities of 5, 10 and 15° in 25 older (60–72 years) and 25 younger (20–31 years) adults. In the pointing task, participants were asked to point to a target on a touchscreen at a natural pace that prioritised accuracy of the touch. In Experiment 2, a subset of these tasks were performed at 15° eccentricity under both monocular and binocular conditions, by 8 glaucoma (55–76 years) and 10 approximately age-matched controls (61–72 years).

Results

Visual localisation and pointing precision was unaffected by ageing (p>0.05) and visual field loss (p>0.05), although movement time was increased in glaucoma (p = 0.01).

Conclusion

Visual localisation and pointing precision to high contrast stimuli within the central 15° of vision are unaffected by ageing. Even in the presence of significant visual field loss, older adults with glaucoma are able perform such tasks with reasonable precision provided the target can be perceived and movement time is not restricted.

Senescent effects on binocular summation for contrast sensitivity and spatial interval acuity

PURPOSE

Age effects on binocular summation, a cortically mediated visual function, were compared for resolution acuity, contrast sensitivity (CS), and spatial interval (SI) hyperacuity.

METHOD

The binocular and monocular thresholds of healthy, optimally-corrected healthy young (mean age 21.3 years) and old (mean age 69.9 years) observers were determined for acuity, SI discrimination, and CS at 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, 8.0 and 18.0 c/deg.

RESULTS

No age effects were observed on monocular or binocular SI discrimination. The binocular summation ratios (BSRs) did not exceed the expected probability gain for resolution acuity or SI discrimination in either age group. Older observers showed a binocular inhibition effect on the SI task. On the CS task, the BSRs of the young significantly exceeded those of the old only at 18.0 c/deg.

CONCLUSIONS

1.) Binocular summation of high spatial frequency contrast information, which may be less robust in the senescent visual system, did not appear to be related to interocular CS differences, 2.) SI discrimination of high contrast, well-separated targets appears to be unaffected by aging, and 3.) Binocular neural summation on SI discrimination may be more likely to be seen with targets that are narrowly separated or low in contrast.

Aging effects on intra- and inter-attribute spatial frequency information for luminance, color, and working memory

Visual working memory (VWM) for spatial frequency information was assessed in both young and older observers. In the first experiment we assessed the effect of a memory mask on a VWM task. We found no effect of mask on retention for either the young or older groups. This argues against the 'inhibition' hypothesis of aging in regards to visual processing, which suggests that the elderly should have difficulty to inhibit irrelevant information. We conclude that the suggestion of an inefficient inhibition process in aging derived from evidence obtained for higher-level WM tasks cannot be generalized to the discrimination of basic patterns in VWM. The second experiment focused on processing resources within VWM by assessing VWM for intra-attribute (color or luminance), and inter-attribute (color and luminance)-defined spatial frequency information. Results show that retention of spatial frequency information in VWM is robust for both the younger and older group regardless of the defining attribute. Thresholds were significantly higher in the inter-attribute condition, indicating increased processing demands for this task and suggesting that these attributes are initially processed in parallel. Older observers showed higher discrimination thresholds than young observers for all conditions indicating a deficit in perceptual abilities rather than in VWM for basic stimuli. The difference in thresholds for the older group was highest in the inter-attribute condition suggesting that older observers show more deficits on visual tasks with increased processing demands.

Recruitment of unique neural systems to support visual memory in normal aging

The performance of many cognitive tasks changes in normal aging [1] [2] [3]. Recent behavioral work has identified some tasks that seem to be performed in an age-invariant manner [4]. To understand the brain mechanisms responsible for this, we combined psychophysical measurements of visual short-term memory with positron emission tomography (PET) in young and old individuals. Participants judged the differences between two visual stimuli, and the memory load was manipulated by interposing a delay between the two stimuli. Both age groups performed the task equally well, but the neural systems supporting performance differed between young and old individuals. Although there was some overlap in the brain regions supporting performance (for example, occipital, temporal and inferior prefrontal cortices, and caudate), the functional interconnections between these common regions were much weaker in old participants. This suggests that the regions were not operating effectively as a network in old individuals. Old participants recruited unique areas, however, including medial temporal and dorsolateral prefrontal cortices. These unique areas were strongly interactive and their activity was related to performance only in old participants. Therefore, these areas may have acted to compensate for reduced interactions between the other brain areas.
