Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the clinical performance of two flowable composites based on methacrylate and one based on ormocer in treating non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) after 48-month evaluation in a split-mouth double-blind clinical study design. METHODS A total of 183 restorations were performed on NCCLs using a universal adhesive system (Futurabond U, Voco GmbH) with selective enamel etching on 27 participants: two participants received twelve restorations each, three received nine restorations each, and 22 participants received six restorations each. Three different flowable composites were employed (n = 61): a low-viscosity methacrylate-based composite (GrandioSO Flow, LVM), a high-viscosity methacrylate-based composite (GrandioSO Heavy Flow, HVM), and an ormocer-based flowable composite (Admira Fusion Flow, ORM). All restorations were evaluated using FDI and USPHS criteria after 48 months. Statistical analysis was conducted using Kaplan-Meier Survival analysis and Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance rank (α = 0.05). RESULTS After 48 months, 17 restorations were lost: LVM 6, HVM 9, ORM 2. The retention rates (95 % confidence interval) were 89.4 % for LVM, 80.4 % for HVM, and 95.6 % for ORM, with a significant difference between HVM vs. LVM and HVM vs. ORM (p < 0.05). Minor defects were observed in 30 restorations for marginal staining criteria (LVM 12, HVM 10, ORM 8) and in 71 restorations for marginal adaptation criteria (LVM 24, HVM 20, ORM 27) without significant difference between groups (p > 0.05). No restorations showed postoperative sensitivity or recurrence of caries. SIGNIFICANCE The increased viscosity of flowable composites could reduce the clinical longevity in NCCLs after 48 months. Ormocer-based and low-viscosity methacrylate-based flowable composites showed a successful clinical performance in NCCLs after 48 months.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the influence of dentin moisture on the clinical behavior of a universal adhesive on posterior teeth after 36 months of follow-up. METHODS Forty-five patients participated in this study. Following a split-mouth design, three operators placed 90 Class I/Class II restorations over moist dentin (MD) or dry (DD) (n = 45) with resin composite (Filtek Bulk Fill) and a universal adhesive used in the etch-and-rinse mode (Single Bond Universal). Each restoration was evaluated according to the FDI and USPHS criteria (postoperative sensitivity, fracture and retention, marginal staining, marginal adaptation, and recurrence of caries) at baseline and after 6-, 12-, and 36 months. For statistical analysis, Kruskal Wallis analysis of variance rank (α = 0.05) and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis were used. RESULTS No significant difference between groups was observed in each FDI criterion after 36 months of clinical evaluation (p > 0.05). The retention rates (confidence interval 95 %) were 97.37 % (86.5 - 99.5) for both MD and DD without significant difference between them (p > 0.05). Eight restorations (MD = 4; DD = 4) showed minimal marginal staining defects (p > 0.05). Two restorations were lost (MD = 1; DD = 1). Fifteen restorations (MD = 8; DD = 7) presented minor marginal discrepancies according to the FDI criteria (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION The clinical performance of the universal adhesive when applied in etch-and-rinse mode was not influenced by dentin moisture in posterior bulk-fill composite restorations. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The level of dentin moisture appears not to influence the clinical efficacy of a universal adhesive when applied using the etch-and-rinse technique in posterior composite resin restorations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the effect of copper nanoparticles (CuNp) on the clinical performance of a universal adhesive system used as an etch-and-rinse or self-etch strategy. METHODS A total of 216 class V (non-carious lesions) restorations were randomly placed in 36 subjects according to the following groups: ERcu, adhesive in etch-and-rinse with 0.1% CuNp; ERct, adhesive in etch-and-rinse without CuNp; SEcu, adhesive in self-etch with 0.1% CuNp; and Sect, adhesive in self-etch without CuNp. Restorations were evaluated at baseline and at 6, 12, 18, 36, and 48 months, using the FDI and USPHS criteria. Appropriate statistical analyses were performed (α = 0.05). RESULTS After 48 months, 14 restorations were lost (two for ERcu, five for SEcu, and seven for SEct) and the retention rates (95% confidence interval [CI]) were 74.1% for ERcu (95% CI 61.1-83.8); 81.5% for ERct (95% CI 69.2-89.6); 64.8% (95% CI 51.5-76.2) for SEcu; and 64.8% (95% CI 51.5-76.2) for SEct, with statistical differences between SEct vs. ERct and SEcu vs. ERct (p < 0.05). No significant differences between the groups were observed when the secondary parameters were evaluated (p > 0.05). Nineteen restorations (two for ERcu, two for ERct, six for SEcu, and nine for SEct) showed minor marginal staining, and 44 restorations (7 for ERcu, 8 for ERct, 14 for SEcu, and 15 for SEct) presented minimal marginal adaptation defects. SIGNIFICANCE This is the first long-term clinical trial to show that the addition of CuNp to a universal adhesive system does not affect clinical performance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the clinical performance of a universal adhesive system (Futurabond U, Voco) when applied following different adhesive strategies in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) after 5 years. METHODS Fifty participants were included. Futurabond U (Voco) was applied in NCCLs using four adhesive strategies (n = 50 each): only self-etch (SE); selective enamel etching + self-etch (SET + SE); etch-and-rinse with dry dentin (ERD); and etch-and-rinse with wet dentin (ERW). All cavities were restored with Admira Fusion composite resin (Voco). Restorations were evaluated after 1, 3, and 5 years using the World Federation criteria (FDI) and the modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. RESULTS After 5 years, retention rates were 81 % (65.8-90.5) for SE, 87 % (73.2-94.4) for SET + SE, 84 % (69.6-92.6) for ERD, and 78 % (63.6-88.9) for ERW (p > 0.05). Thirty-five restorations were considered to have minor discrepancies in marginal adaptation at the 5-year recall (14 for SE, 9 for SET + SE, 6 for ERD, and 6 for ERW; p > 0.05). Sixteen restorations were detected as a minor marginal discoloration (6 for SE, 4 for SET + SE, 1 for ERD, and 5 for ERW; p > 0.05) and one restoration showed a recurrence of caries (1 for ERW; p > 0.05) at the 5-year recall. No restorations showed postoperative sensitivity after 5 years. SIGNIFICANCE NCCLs restorations using a universal adhesive showed satisfactory clinical performance after 5 years, regardless of the adhesive strategy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this double-blind, randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the 6- and 18-month clinical performances of a new universal adhesive applied in the "no-waiting" (NW) technique to non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) using two evaluation criteria. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred and seventy-six restorations were assigned to four groups according to the adhesive system, adhesive strategy, and application mode: Prime&Bond Active (PB) applied using the etch-and-rinse (ER) and self-etch (SE) strategies with 20 s applications and Clearfil Universal Bond Quick (CQ) applied using the ER and SE strategies with the NW technique. The composite resin restorations were evaluated at baseline and after 6 and 18 months using the World Dental Federation (FDI) and US Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. The Friedman repeated measures analysis of variance and Wilcoxon test were used for statistical analyses (α = 0.05). RESULTS No significant differences were observed among any of the groups or criteria after 6 months (p > 0.05). After 18 months, 10 restorations were lost (p > 0.05) (2 with PB-ER [95.5%; 95%CI: 92-100%], 4 with PB-SE [90.9%; 95%CI: 82-98%], 0 with CQ-ER [100%; 95%CI: 92-100%], and 4 with CQ-SE [90.9%; 82-98%]). The restorations performed with the SE strategy showed more marginal discrepancies than those performed with the ER strategy, mainly when the FDI criteria were used (p < 0.05). Those that used the PB-SE showed fewer marginal discrepancies than those that used the CQ-SE (FDI; p < 0.05). A few restorations showed marginal discrepancies after the USPHS analysis (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The results when using the CQ-SE and -ER strategies with the NW technique were similar to those when using the PB-SE and -ER strategies in standard applications to non-carious cervical lesions after 6 and 18 months of clinical evaluation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE After 6 and 18 months, the application of Clearfil Universal Bond Quick with the "no-waiting" technique showed similar clinical performance compared to the standard application of Prime & Bond Active applied using the standard application time (20 s). Abstract
Objectives The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of collagen cross-linking agents (CCLAs) used in combination with the adhesive technique in restorative procedures. Materials and Methods In this systematic review, the authors followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses checklist. An electronic search was performed using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, LILACS, and DOSS, up to October 2020. The gray literature was also researched. Only randomized clinical trials were selected. Results The selection process yielded 3 studies from the 838 retrieved. The addition of CCLAs in the retention of restorations increased the number of events. The postoperative sensitivity scores and marginal adaptation scores showed no significant difference between the CCLA and control groups, and the marginal pigmentation scores showed a significant increase in the CCLA group. There were no caries events in any group throughout the evaluation period. Conclusions This systematic review showed that there is no clinical efficacy to justify the use of CCLAs in the protocols performed.

Thirty-six-month follow-up of cervical composite restorations placed with an MDP-free universal adhesive system using different adhesive protocols: a randomized clinical trial. Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the influence of different application strategies on the clinical behavior of an MDP-free universal adhesive placed in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) over the course of 36 months. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-one patients participated in this study (N = 31). One hundred twenty-four restorations were assigned to four groups: We used the self-etch strategy on groups with (SE-et) and without (SET) selective enamel etching, and the etch-and-rinse strategy on groups with dry (ER-D) and moist (ER-M) dentin. After applying the MDP-free universal adhesive (Xeno Select universal adhesive, Dentsply Sirona), cavities were filled using EvoluX composite resin (Dentsply Sirona). The restorations were evaluated at baseline and after 36 months according to World Dental Federation (FDI) and US Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. Friedman's repeated-measures analysis of variance rank (α = 0.05) was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS We evaluated the 31 patients after 36 months. Forty-two restorations were lost (ER-D = 5, ER-M = 7, SE-et = 14, SET = 16). The 36-month retention/fracture rates (95% confidence interval) were 83.9% for ER-D, 77.4% for ER-M, 54.9% for SE-et, and 48.4% for SET. ER strategy showed better retention rate than SE strategy (p < 0.05). Thirty-four restorations (ER-D = 6, ER-M = 10, SE-et = 10, SET = 8) showed marginal staining per FDI criteria and 15 restorations (ER-D = 1, ER-M = 2, SE-et = 6, SET = 6) showed marginal staining per USPHS criteria. No restorations showed postoperative sensitivity or recurrence of caries. CONCLUSION The retention rate of Xeno Select universal adhesive was poor, mainly in the self-etch strategy. TRIAL REGISTRATION REBEC clinical registry under protocol RBR-4wh4sh. CLINICAL RELEVANCE MDP-free universal adhesive behavior depends on the bonding strategy used.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the influence of the sonic device on the clinical performance of one-step self-etch adhesive systems in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) after 18 months. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty patients participated in this study. Eighty restorations were assigned to two groups (n = 40): Sonic application and Manual application. After the adhesive application (iBond Self-Etch, Kulzer, Hanau, Germany), NCCLs were restored using composite resin (Charisma, Kulzer, Hanau, Germany). The restorations were evaluated at baseline and after 18 months both according to the Word Dental Federation (FDI) and the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. Friedman repeated measures analysis of variance by rank and Wilcoxon test for significance in each pair were applied (α = 0.05). RESULTS After 18 months, 38 patients were evaluated. Twenty-three restorations were lost (19 for manual vs. 4 for sonic application). The retention rates (95% confidence interval) were 50% (CI 34.8%-65.1%) for manual application and 84.2% (CI 69.6%-92.6%) for sonic application (p < 0.05). Twelve restorations showed marginal staining (nine for manual vs. three for sonic application; FDI, p < 0.05) and nine some marginal discrepancy (seven for manual vs. two for sonic application; FDI, p < 0.05). No restorations showed postoperative sensitivity and caries recurrence at the time. CONCLUSION The sonic application increases the retention rate of iBond Self-Etch after 18 months of clinical evaluation in NCCLs. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The application of a simplified self-etch adhesive (iBond Self-Etch) associated to a sonic device seems to be an alternative to improve the clinical behavior in NCCLs.

Adhesive strategies in cervical lesions: systematic review and a network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. Clin Oral Investig 2021; 25:2495-2510. Abstract
OBJECTIVES A network meta-analysis (NMA) was performed to assess which adhesive strategy is most clinically effective in treating non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs). MATERIAL AND METHODS Studies were identified by a systematic search of electronic databases including MEDLINE via PubMed, Brazilian Library in Dentistry (BBO), Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature database (LILACS), Scopus, and Web of Science without restrictions on publication year or language. The grey literature was also consulted. Only randomized clinical trials that compared different adhesive strategies in NCCLs in adult patients were included. The risk of bias was evaluated by using the Cochrane Collaboration tool. A random-effects Bayesian mixed treatment comparison model was used to compare adhesive strategies (3ER, 2ER, 2SE, and 1SE) at different follow-up times. The surface under cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) was estimated for each strategy. Heterogeneity was assessed by using the Cochran Q test and I2 statistics. The quality of evidence was evaluated using the GRADE approach. RESULTS A total of 5058 studies were identified, 66 of which met the eligibility criteria and of these 5 were judged "low" risk of bias and 57 were meta-analyzed. We did not observe significant differences in the NMA analysis for any two pairs of adhesives, except for the shortest follow-up for 2ER vs 3ER. The material 2SE ranked highest, although it differed only slightly from the other bonding strategies. CONCLUSIONS No bonding strategy is better than the others. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Adhesive efficacy cannot be characterized by its bonding strategy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the five-year clinical performance of Scotchbond Universal Adhesive (SU; 3M Oral Care, St. Paul, MN, USA) in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) using two evaluation criteria. METHODS Thirty-nine patients participated in this study. Two hundred restorations were assigned to four groups: SU-ERm: etch-and-rinse + moist dentin; SU-ERd: etch-and-rinse + dry dentin; SU-Set: selective enamel etching; and SU-SE: self-etch. A nanofilled composite resin was placed incrementally. The restorations were evaluated at baseline and after 5 years using both the World Dental Federation (FDI) and the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. The survival rates (retention/fractures) were calculated with the Kaplan-Meier and the log-rank test. For the secondary outcomes, Friedman repeated measures analysis of variance by rank was applied (α = 0.05). RESULTS After 5 years the recall rate was 86%. The retention/fracture rates were 93% for Erm and ERd, 88.4% for SEet and 81.4% for SE. A significant difference was observed for SE vs. ERd and SE vs. ERm (p = 0.01). Also, marginal discoloration and adaptation showed significant differences with ERm and ERd resulting in fewer marginal discrepancies than SE (p < 0.05). SIGNIFICANCE After 5 years, the clinical behavior of the universal adhesive in the etch-and-rinse strategy was better when compared to the self-etch strategy. The use of selective enamel etching is highly recommended for the self-etch strategy. The FDI and USPHS evaluation criteria showed similar results after 5 years.

Abstract
CLINICAL RELEVANCE Non-carious cervical lesion restorations using a dual-cure universal adhesive in self-etch and etch-and-rinse mode showed satisfactory clinical performance after 18 months. SUMMARY Objectives: The objective of this multicenter, double-blind, split-mouth randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the clinical performance of a new dual-cure universal adhesive system (Futurabond U, Voco GmBH) when applied using different strategies over a period of 18 months.Methods and Materials: Fifty patients participated in this study. Two hundred non-carious cervical lesions were restored using the adhesive Futurabond U according to four adhesive strategies (n=50 per group): only self-etch (SEE), selective enamel etching + self-etch (SET), etch-and-rinse with dry dentin (ERDry), and etch-and-rinse with wet dentin (ERWet). After the adhesive application, cavities were restored using Admira Fusion composite resin. These restorations were evaluated according to FDI World Dental Federation criteria for the following characteristics: retention/fracture, marginal adaptation, marginal staining, postoperative sensitivity, and caries recurrence.Results: After 18 months, only four patients (12 months: one patient, n=4 restorations; and 18 months: three patients, n=12 restorations) were not evaluated. Fourteen restorations were lost after 18 months of clinical evaluation (four for SEE, three for SET, three for ERDry, and four for ERWet). The retention rates for 18 months (95% confidence interval) were 92% (81%-97%) for SEE, 94% (83%-97%) for SET, 94% (83%-97%) for ERDry, and 92% (81%-97%) for ERWet (p>0.05). Thirty-eight restorations were considered to have minor discrepancies in marginal adaptation at the 18-month recall (13 for SEE, 13 for SET, six for ERDry, and six for ERWet; p>0.05). Fourteen restorations were detected as a minor marginal discoloration at the 18-month recall (six for SEE, six for SET, one for ERDry, and one for ERWet; p>0.05). However, all were considered clinically acceptable. No restorations showed postoperative sensitivity or caries recurrence at the time.Conclusion: The clinical performance of the Futurabond U did not depend on the bonding strategy used, and it was considered reliable after 18 months of clinical evaluation, although more marginal discrepancy was observed in the self-etch group.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the addition of copper nanoparticles (CuNp) on the clinical performance of a universal adhesive system used as etch-and-rinse (ER) and self-etch (SE). METHODS 216 restorations were randomly placed in 36 subjects according to the following groups: ERcu = etch-and-rinse with 0.1% CuNp; ERct = etch-and-rinse without CuNp; SEcu = self-etch with 0.1% CuNp; SEct = self-etch without CuNp. Resin composite was placed incrementally and light-cured. The restorations were evaluated at baseline and 6, 12 and 18 months using the FDI and USPHS criteria. Statistical analyses were performed using appropriate tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS The addition of CuNp did not increase the clinical performance (FDI / USPHS) of the universal adhesive tested after 18-month when applied in the ER mode (p > 0.05). The addition of CuNp in SE restorations increased the retention rate significantly and decreased the marginal discrepancies after 18 months (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The clinical performance of universal adhesive was significantly increased when applied in the SE mode with the addition of copper nanoparticles. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This is the first study that demonstrates a slight improvement in the clinical performance of universal adhesive systems in non-carious cervical lesions when added CuNp in lower concentration.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this randomized, controlled, prospective clinical trial was to evaluate the performances of two different universal adhesives and one etch-rinse adhesive for restoration of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs). Material and Methods Twenty patients with at least seven NCCLs were enrolled. Lesions were divided into seven groups according to adhesive systems and application modes: GSE: GLUMA Universal-self-etch, GSL: GLUMA Universal-selective etching, GER: GLUMA Universal-etch-and-rinse, ASE: All-Bond Universal-self-etch, ASL: All-Bond Universal-selective etching, AER: All-Bond Universal-etch-and-rinse, SBE (Control): Single Bond2-etch-and-rinse. A total of 155 NCCLs were restored with a nano hybrid composite (Tetric N-Ceram). Restorations were scored with regard to retention, marginal discoloration, marginal adaptation, recurrent caries and post-operative sensitivity using modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria after one week, 6, 12 and 24 months. Statistical evaluations were performed using Chi-square tests (p=0.05). Results The recall rate was 81.9% after the 24-month follow-up. The cumulative retention rates for self-etch groups (GSE: 72.2%, ASE:75%) were significantly lower than other experimental groups (GSL: 93.7%, GER: 100%, ASL: 94.1%, AER: 100%, SBE: 100%) at the 24-month follow-up (p<0.05). Regarding marginal adaptation and marginal discoloration, GSE and ASE groups demonstrated more bravo scores after 6 and 12-month observations but differences were not significant (p>0.05). Only one restoration from ASL group demonstrated post-operative sensitivity at 6 and 12-month observations. No secondary caries was observed on the restorations at any recall. At the end of 24-month observations, no significant differences were detected among groups regarding any of the criteria assessed, except retention. Conclusion GLUMA Universal and All-Bond Universal showed better results in etch-and-rinse and selective etching mode compared to the self-etch mode regarding retention. Etch-and-rinse and selective etching application modes of the current universal adhesives tended to provide better clinical outcomes considering the criteria evaluated at the end of 24-month evaluation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the clinical behavior of Proanthocyanidins (PA)-free and PA-containing two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive used underneath resin composite restorations in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) over a 6- (6 M) and 24-month (24 M) period. METHODS 135 restorations were randomly placed in 45 subjects. The NCCLs were conditioned (37% phosphoric acid for 15 s) and distributed into 3 groups: Control (EX0) - ExciTE F (Ivoclar Vivadent) adhesive applied following the manufacturer's recommendations; EX2 and EX5 - 2 wt% and 5 wt% of PA were added to ExciTE F, respectively, and applied as in EX0. Resin composite was placed incrementally and light-cured. The restorations were evaluated at baseline, 6 M and 24 M, using FDI and USPHS criteria. Statistical analyses were performed using Friedman and Wilcoxon tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS The retention rates were 98% (95% confidence interval 88-99%) for EX0, 92% (80-97%) for EX2; and 85% (72-93%) for EX5 at 6 M. A significant difference was found only for EX5 at 6 M when compared with the respective baseline findings (p = 0.03) and when compared with EX0 and EX2 (p = 0.001) at 6 M. After 24 M, the retention rates were 98% (88-99%) for EX0, 73% (59-84%) for EX2, and 71% (56-82%) for EX5. Only EX0 did not result in significant difference in retention rate at 24 M when compared with baseline but showed a significant higher retention rate when compared with those of EX2 and EX5 (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION Adding proanthocyanidins to the adhesive solution jeopardized the retention of composite resins restorations in non-carious cervical lesions after 24 months. CLINICAL RELEVANCE In spite of being user-friendlier than when used separately, the incorporation of proanthocyanidins into the adhesive solution impairs the longevity of composite restorations.

Abstract
SUMMARY
The literature was reviewed to evaluate the compliance of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) with the CONsolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT ) and the risk of bias of these studies through the Cochrane Collaboration risk of bias tool (CCRT). RCTs were searched at Cochrane Library, PubMed, and other electronic databases to find studies about adhesive systems for cervical lesions. The compliance of the articles with CONSORT was evaluated using the following scale: 0 = no description, 1 = poor description, and 2 = adequate description. Descriptive analyses about the number of studies by journal, follow-up period, country, and quality assessments were performed with CCRT for assessing risk of bias in RCTs. One hundred thirty-eight RCTs were left for assessment. More than 30% of the studies received scores of 0 or 1. Flow chart, effect size, allocation concealment, and sample size were more critical items, with 80% receiving a score of 0. The overall CONSORT score for the included studies was 15.0 ± 4.8 points, which represents 46.9% of the maximum CONSORT score. A significant difference among countries was observed (p<0.001), as well as range of year (p<0.001). Only 4.3% of the studies were judged as at low risk; 36.2% were classified as having unclear risk and 59.4% as having high risk of bias. The adherence of RCTs evaluating adhesive systems to the CONSORT is low with unclear/high risk of bias.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We aimed to answer the following PICO question: "Is the risk of postoperative sensitivity (POS), retention rates and marginal discoloration of composite restorations [CR] bonded with self-etch (SE) in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) of adults equals to etch-and-rinse (ER) adhesives?". METHODS A comprehensive search was performed in May 2016 in the MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, BBO and Cochrane Library and SIGLE, abstracts of IADR, unpublished and ongoing trials registries, dissertations and theses without restrictions. Only randomized clinical trials that compared composite resin restorations placed with self-etch and etch-and-rinse in NCCLs were included. After removal of duplicates and non-eligible articles, 50 articles from 42 studies (follow-ups of the same study were merged) remained for synthesis of the risk of bias (Cochrane Risk of bias tool). RESULTS Thirteen studies were at "high" risk of bias, yielding 29 studies for meta-analysis. No difference on the POS after restoration placement (risk ratio [RR] 1.04; 95% CI 0.81 to 1.34) as well as in the retention rates for all follow-up periods was observed. The etch-and-rinse approach produced less marginal discoloration at 18 months to 2 years (RR 1.51; 95% CI 1.21 to 1.90) and at 4 to 5 years (RR 1.81; 95% CI 1.28 to 2.55) (p<0.0007). CONCLUSIONS The adhesive strategy did not influence the POS and the retention rates of composite resin in NCCLs in any of the follow-up periods; but less marginal discoloration was found in etch-and-rinse adhesives. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Composite resin restorations placed with self-etch and etch-and-rinse adhesives produce restoration with the similar clinical service and POS, however using etch-and-rinse adhesives one can reduce marginal discoloration. Abstract
SUMMARY
Purpose: The objective of this double-blind, randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the six-month clinical performance of a new universal adhesive (Xeno Select, Dentsply) in noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) using two evaluation criteria: World Dental Federation (FDI) and the US Public Health Service (USPHS).
Methods and Materials: A total of 124 restorations were randomly placed in 31 patients according to the following groups: ER-D = etch-and-rinse/dry dentin; ER-M = etch-and-rinse/moist dentin; SE-et = selective enamel etching; and SET = self-etch. The composite resin EVOLUX (Dentsply) was placed incrementally. The restorations were evaluated after one week (baseline) and at six months using the FDI and USPHS criteria. Statistical analyses were performed using appropriate tests (α=0.05).
Results: Fifteen restorations were lost or fractured at six months (one for ER-D, three for ER-M, five for SE-et, and six for SET) (p>0.05 at six-month recall). When ER (ER-D and ER-M) was compared with SE (SE-et and SET) there was a significant difference in the retention rate after six months (p=0.001). Marginal staining and postoperative sensitivity to air were only observed in three (one for ER-M and two for SET) and two restorations (two for ER-D) in both evaluation criteria (p>0.05), respectively. Forty-seven restorations were considered to have minor discrepancies in marginal adaptation at the six-month recall using the FDI criteria (13 for ER-D, 10 for ER-M, 11 for SE-et, and 13 for SET; p>0.05 between groups). However, for all groups, a significant difference was detected when baseline and six-month data were compared (p<0.05).
Conclusions: The six-month clinical behavior of Xeno Select Universal Adhesive depends on the bonding strategy used. The universal adhesive did not fulfill the American Dental Association criteria for full approval when used in the self-etch mode.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To identify if selective etching of enamel (SEE) margins improves the retention rates and marginal discoloration of cervical composite restorations in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) of adult patients. SOURCE MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, BBO Library, Cochrane Library and SIGLE were searched without restrictions, as well as IADR abstracts and gray literature via trial registries. Dissertations and theses were searched using the ProQuest Dissertations and Periódicos Capes Theses databases. STUDY SELECTION We included randomized clinical trials that compared the clinical effectiveness of SEE using the self-etch adhesive for direct composite resin restorations in NCCLs in the permanent dentition. DATA After removal of duplicates, 2689 articles were identified. Following screening of abstracts, 10 studies remained in the qualitative synthesis. Seven were considered to be at "low" risk of bias. The report of the studies varied from 1 to 5 years. Except for one-year follow-up, there was a significantly lower marginal discoloration and marginal adaptation during all follow-up periods. Significantly less loss of retention of restorations at the 3-year follow-up was observed with the selective enamel etching technique. CONCLUSIONS Selective enamel prior to application of self-etch adhesive systems in NCCLs might improve clinical performance of resin-composite cervical restorations, although further long-term research is required to confirm this. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Selective enamel etching prior to application of self-etch adhesive systems in NCCLs can produce composite restorations with higher longevity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental adhesives are believed to influence marginal adaptation and marginal discoloration when used under posterior resin-based composite restorations. Studies on the latest adhesive systems reveal that the group of the three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive (3-E&RA) and the one-step self-etch adhesive (1-SEA) have entirely different bonding mechanisms, as well as different bond strength and resistance to chemical, thermal and mechanical factors. STUDY OBJECTIVES A hypothesis that a 1-SEA would result in greater enamel marginal discoloration and poorer marginal adaptation than a 3-E&RA was tested. MATERIAL AND METHODS One hundred restorations were placed with a 1-SEA and 100 restorations with a 3-E&RA. Teeth were restored with Filtek Supreme nanofilled resin-composite and were evaluated for marginal adaptation and marginal discoloration at baseline, and 6 months, 12 months, and 36 months postoperatively. RESULTS The statistical analysis revealed significant differences in marginal integrity between test groups. The 1-SEA resulted in greater enamel marginal discoloration and poorer marginal adaptation than the 3-E&RA at any recall time. CONCLUSIONS Marginal adaptation and marginal discoloration depend on the type of dentin adhesive used. The restorations with Filtek Supreme and Scotchbond MP are better than the restorations with Adper Prompt L-Pop with regard to the marginal adaptation and marginal discoloration at 6-, 12- and 36-month evaluations.

Abstract
SUMMARY
The purpose of this study was to use shear bond strength (SBS) and shear fatigue limit (SFL) testing to determine the effect of phosphoric acid pre-etching of enamel and dentin prior to application of self-etch adhesives for bonding resin composite to these substrates. Three self-etch adhesives—1) G- ænial Bond (GC Corporation, Tokyo, Japan); 2) OptiBond XTR (Kerr Corp, Orange, CA, USA); and 3) Scotchbond Universal (3M ESPE Dental Products, St Paul, MN, USA)—were used to bond Z100 Restorative resin composite to enamel and dentin surfaces. A stainless-steel metal ring with an inner diameter of 2.4 mm was used to bond the resin composite to flat-ground (4000 grit) tooth surfaces for determination of both SBS and SFL. Fifteen specimens each were used to determine initial SBS to human enamel/dentin, with and without pre-etching with a 35% phosphoric acid (Ultra-Etch, Ultradent Products Inc, South Jordan, UT, USA) for 15 seconds prior to the application of the adhesives. A staircase method of fatigue testing (25 specimens for each test) was then used to determine the SFL of resin composite bonded to enamel/dentin using a frequency of 10 Hz for 50,000 cycles or until failure occurred. A two-way analysis of variance and Tukey post hoc test were used for analysis of SBS data, and a modified t-test with Bonferroni correction was used for the SFL data. Scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the area of the bonded restorative/tooth interface. For all three adhesive systems, phosphoric acid pre-etching of enamel demonstrated significantly higher (p<0.05) SBS and SFL with pre-etching than it did without pre-etching. The SBS and SFL of dentin bonds decreased with phosphoric acid pre-etching. The SBS and SFL of bonds using phosphoric acid prior to application of self-etching adhesives clearly demonstrated different tendencies between enamel and dentin. The effect of using phosphoric acid, prior to the application of the self-etching adhesives, on SBS and SFL was dependent on the adhesive material and tooth substrate and should be carefully considered in clinical situations.

Purpose
To evaluate the 18-month clinical performance of a multimode adhesive (Scotchbond Universal Adhesive, SU, 3M ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA) in noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) using two evaluation criteria.
Materials and Methods
Thirty-nine patients participated in this study. Two-hundred restorations were assigned to four groups: ERm, etch-and-rinse + moist dentin; ERd, etch-and-rinse + dry dentin; Set, selective enamel etching; and SE, self-etch. The composite resin, Filtek Supreme Ultra (3M ESPE), was placed incrementally. The restorations were evaluated at baseline, and at 18 months, using both the World Dental Federation (FDI) and the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. Statistical analyses were performed using Friedman repeated-measures analysis of variance by rank and McNemar test for significance in each pair (α=0.05).
Results
Five restorations (SE: 3; Set: 1; and ERm: 1) were lost after 18 months (p>0.05 for either criteria). Marginal staining occurred in four and 10% of the restorations evaluated (p>0.05), respectively, for USPHS and FDI criteria. Nine restorations were scored as bravo for marginal adaptation using the USPHS criteria and 38%, 40%, 36%, and 44% for groups ERm, ERd, Set, and SE, respectively, when the FDI criteria were applied (p>0.05). However, when semiquantitative scores (or SQUACE) for marginal adaptation were used, SE resulted in a significantly greater number of restorations, with more than 30% of the total length of the interface showing marginal discrepancy (28%) in comparison with the other groups (8%, 6%, and 8%, respectively, for ERm, ERd, and Set).
Conclusions
The clinical retention of the multimode adhesive at 18 months does not depend on the bonding strategy. The only differences between strategies were found for the parameter marginal adaptation, for which the FDI criteria were more sensitive than the USPHS criteria.

Abstract
PURPOSE To study the effect of dentin age and adhesive composition on the microtensile dentin bond strengths (μTBS) of five dentin adhesives. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty extracted caries-free human teeth were assigned to the appropriate age group: less than 21 years of age (<21), 21-40 years of age (21-40), and greater than 40 years of age (>40). For each age group, specimens were randomly divided into five dentin adhesives: (1) Adper Easy Bond (EB, 3M ESPE), a one-step self-etch adhesive; (2) Experimental Adper Easy Bond without the Vitrebond Co-polymer (CP) (EBnoCP, 3M ESPE); (3) Adper Single Bond Plus (SB, 3M ESPE), a two-step etch&rinse adhesive; (4) Experimental Adper Single Bond Plus without CP (SBnoCP, 3M ESPE); and (5) Adper Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (MP, 3M ESPE), a three-step etch&rinse adhesive, as the control group. Specimens were sectioned in X and Y directions and the resulting beams were tested to failure in tension mode at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. Statistical analysis was computed using t-test and two-way analysis of variance followed by Fisher least significant difference multiple comparison post hoc test at p < 0.05. RESULTS The highest mean μTBS values were obtained in the control group (MP) for all age groups. EB resulted in statistically similar mean μTBS compared to EBnoCP for all age groups: p = 0.538 for (<21); p = 0.974 for (21-40); and p = 0.909 for (>40). SB resulted in statistically higher mean μTBS than SBnoCP for all age groups [p<0.009 for (<21); p<0.028 for (21-40); and p<0.041 for (>40)]. MP, the control group, resulted in statistically lower mean μTBS when applied to the oldest age group (>40) compared to the youngest age group (<21), at p < 0.04. When means were pooled for the variable 'age group,' SB resulted in significantly higher mean μTBS than SBnoCP at p < 0.009, while EB resulted in statistically similar mean μTBS compared to EBnoCP (p=0.9). MP resulted in statistically higher mean μTBS than all other adhesives-SB (p<0.0001), SBnoCP (p<0.0001), EBnoCP (p<0.022), and EB (p<0.046). CONCLUSIONS The substrate age influenced the bonding ability of the three-step etch&rinse adhesive. The presence of a carboxylic-based polymer (CP) enhanced the bonding ability of the two-step etch&rinse adhesive.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study evaluated the effects of filler addition, storage medium and time on biaxial flexural strength and flexural modulus of six adhesive systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS The adhesives were either unfilled resins: Single Bond, Prime&Bond 2.1 and One-Step; or filled resins: Single Bond Plus, Prime&Bond NT and One-Step Plus. Resin discs of each product (0.5 mm thick × 6.0 mm diameter) were prepared using silicon molds (n = 10). The discs were stored dry, in water, mineral oil or ethanol for 1 week or 3 months before biaxial flexural testing. Data were statistically analyzed by 3-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test (α = 0.05). The specimens were tested in a universal testing machine at 1.27 mm/min until failure occurred. RESULTS In general, the storage in ethanol led to significantly lower flexural strength and flexural modulus values than the other storage conditions for all adhesives in both storage periods. Filler addition increased flexural strength and flexural modulus for Prime&Bond NT, when it was stored dry or in water for 1 week. For Single Bond Plus, the filler addition resulted in higher flexural modulus, when it was stored for 1 week in oil and in ethanol. No significant differences in flexural modulus were observed between One-Step and One-Step Plus in any storage medium. CONCLUSIONS Results suggested that filler addition does not necessarily have to increase the flexural strength and flexural modulus. Ethanol and oil storages tended to yield opposite effects.

Abstract
Clinical Relevance
The 18-month retention rate of the two self-etch adhesives used in the present study was similar to that of two etch-and-rinse adhesives from the same manufacturer. However, the quality of enamel margins was significantly better for the two etch-and-rinse adhesives.
SUMMARY
Statement of the Problem
With Institutional Review Board approval, 39 patients who needed restoration of noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) were enrolled in this study. A total of 125 NCCLs were selected and randomly assigned to four groups: 1) a three-step etch-and-rinse adhesive, Adper Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (MP, 3M ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA); 2) a two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive, Adper Single Bond Plus (SB, 3M ESPE); 3) a two-step self-etch adhesive, Adper Scotchbond SE (SE, 3M ESPE); and 4) a one-step self-etch adhesive, Adper Easy Bond (EB, 3M ESPE). A nanofilled composite resin was used for all restorations. Restorations were evaluated at six months and 18 months using modified U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) parameters.
Results
At six months after initial placement, 107 restorations (85.6% recall rate) were evaluated. At 18 months, 94 restorations (75.2% recall rate) were available for evaluation. The 6 mo/18 mo overall retention rates (%) were 100/90.9 for MP; 100/91.7 for SB; 100/90.9 for SE; and 96.4/92.3 for EB with no statistical difference between any pair of groups at each recall. Sensitivity to air decreased significantly for all adhesives from the preoperative to the postoperative stage and was stable thereafter. Interfacial staining did not change statistically from baseline to six months; however, interfacial staining at the enamel margins was statistically worse at 18 months than at baseline for the two self-etch adhesives EB and SE. Marginal adaptation was statistically worse at 18 months compared with baseline only for EB. This tendency was already significant at the six-month recall.
Conclusion
Although 18-month retention was similar for the different adhesion strategies, enamel marginal deficiencies were more prevalent for the self-etch adhesives.

Abstract
The current study investigated the clinical effectiveness of three adhesives and the use of retention form in Class V resin composite restorations of the non-carious cervical lesion (NCCL) over a two-year period. One-hundred and fifty NCCLs in 39 patients were restored with resin composites according to six experimental protocols combining the presence or absence of retention form and three adhesives: ScotchBond Multi-Purpose (MP, 3M ESPE), an experimental adhesive (EX, Vericom) and Adper Prompt (AP, 3M ESPE). All restorations were evaluated at baseline, 6, 12 and 24 months. Modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria were used to evaluate the restorations. MP was found to have significantly superior marginal adaptation than AP in cumulative logistic regression analysis (odds ratio, 2.12; 95% confidence interval, 1.05-4.31; p = 0.0397). In analysis using the Pearson's Chi-square or Fisher's Exact Test to compare the clinical performance of restorations with and without retention form, EX with retention form showed a significantly higher retention rate at two years than that without retention form (p = 0.0089). Restorations with retention form also showed significantly less marginal discoloration than those without retention form in all three adhesives (p = 0.0336).

Abstract
The aim was to test the null hypotheses that there is no difference: (1) in carious lesion development at the restoration margin between class II composite resin restorations in primary molars produced through the atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) with and without a chemomechanical caries removal gel and (2) in the survival rate of class II composite resin restorations between two treatment groups after 2 years. Three hundred twenty-seven children with 568 class II cavitated lesions were included in a parallel mouth study design. Four operators placed resin composite (Filtek Z 250) restorations bonded with a self-etch adhesive (Adper prompt L pop). Two independent examiners evaluated the restorations after 0.5, 1, and 2 years using the modified Ryge criteria. The Kaplan-Meier survival method was applied to estimate survival percentages. A high proportion of restorations were lost during the study period. Therefore, the first hypothesis could not be tested. No statistically significant difference was observed between the cumulative survival percentages of restorations produced by the two treatment approaches over the 2-year period (ART, 54.1 +/- 3.4%; ART with Carisolv, 46.0 +/- 3.4%). This hypothesis was accepted. ART with chemomechanical gel might not provide an added benefit increasing the survival percentages of ART class II composite resin restorations in primary teeth.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the morphological, early and long-term microtensile bond strengths (microTBS) of one-step self-etch systems to unground and ground enamel. MATERIALS AND METHODS Resin composite (Filtek Z250) buildups were bonded to the buccal and lingual enamel surfaces (unground, bur-cut or SiC-roughened enamel) of third molars after adhesive application using the following adhesives: Clearfil S3 Bond (CS3); Adper Prompt L-Pop (ADP); iBond (iB) and, as the control, Clearfil SE Bond (CSE). Six tooth halves were assigned for each condition. After storage in water (24 hours/37 degrees C), the bonded specimens were sectioned into beams (0.8 mm2) and subjected to microTBS (0.5 mm/min) either immediately (IM) or after six (6 M) or 12 months (12 M) of water storage. The data were analyzed by three-way repeated measures ANOVA and Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05). Surface conditioning was observed under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). RESULTS The microTBS in the Si-C paper and diamond bur groups were similar and higher than the unground group. No significant difference was observed among the different storage periods, except for CS3, which showed an increase in the microTBS after 12 M. The etching pattern was more retentive on ground enamel. CONCLUSIONS One-step self-etch adhesives showed higher bond strengths on ground enamel and no reductions in resin-enamel bonds were observed after 12 M of water storage.

Abstract
This study evaluated the microleakage of brackets bonded by four different enamel etching techniques. Forty freshly extracted human premolars were divided randomly into four equal groups and received the following treatment: group 1, acid etching; group 2, self-etching primer (SEP); group 3, erbium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser etching; and group 4, erbium, chromium:yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser etching. After photopolymerization, the teeth were kept in distilled water for 1 month and then subjected to 500 thermal cycles. Then, the specimens were sealed with nail varnish, stained with 0.5% basic fuchsin for 24 h, sectioned, and examined under a stereomicroscope. In addition, they were scored for marginal microleakage at the adhesive-enamel and bracket-adhesive interfaces from the incisal and gingival margins. Statistical analyses consisted of the Kruskal-Wallis test and the Mann-Whitney U test with Bonferroni correction. Microleakage occurred between the adhesive-enamel and bracket-adhesive interfaces in all groups. For the adhesive-enamel surface, a significant difference was observed between group 1 and groups 2 (P = 0.011), 3 (P = 0.002), and 4 (P = 0.000) on the gingival side. Overall, significant differences were observed between group 1 and groups 3 (P = 0.003) and 4 (P = 0.000). In dental bonding procedures, acid etching was found to result in the least microleakage. Since etching with a laser decreases the risk of caries and is time-saving, it may serve as an alternative to acid etching.

Clinical Relevance
After calibration of the restoration procedure, three operators experienced differences in tooth-composite interface morphology and microleakage formation. These differences reflect technique-sensitivity of the etch-and-rinse adhesive. The lowest microleakage on dentin was related to an enhanced interface integrity. After additional application of an adhesive component, sealing of the enamel and dentin was partially enhanced, but microleakage formation did not decrease. These results are helpful in the comparative evaluation of other bonding systems.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the interfacial ultra-morphology formed by "all-in-one" self-etch adhesives. METHODS Forty-nine extracted molars were assigned to one of five all-in-one adhesives: Adper Prompt L-Pop (AP, 3M ESPE); Clearfil S3 Bond (S3, Kuraray); G-Bond (GB, GC America); iBond (iB, Heraeus Kulzer) and Xeno IV (XE, Dentsply Caulk). Adper Single Bond Plus (SB, 3M ESPE), a two-step etch&rinse adhesive, and Clearfil SE Bond (SE, Kuraray), a two-step self-etch adhesive, were used as controls. Dentin, unground enamel and ground enamel were used as bonding substrates. Dentin specimens were processed for FESEM and TEM analyses. Enamel specimens were processed for FESEM. RESULTS Dentin: GB, iB, S3, SE and XE resulted in a submicron-thick hybrid layer (0.2-0.7 microm), but only S3 and SE did not result in interfacial gaps. AP resulted in the thickest hybrid layer (1.7-2.9 microm) among the self-etch adhesives. SB resulted in a 3.4-5.2 pm thick hybrid layer. Unground enamel-GB, iB and SE resulted in a mostly featureless morphology resembling that of untreated enamel with areas in which the superficial enamel layer was removed without dissolving the subsurface enamel. XE resulted in areas of intra-prismatic etching and areas without any etching pattern. S3 resulted in frequent shallow intra-prismatic etching, while AP was able to unveil the enamel crystallites across the entire enamel surface. Phosphoric acid in SB resulted in the deepest intra- and inter-prismatic demineralization. Ground enamel--AP resulted in a well-defined inter-prismatic etching pattern. iB, GB, SE and S3 resulted in islands of superficially dissolved enamel within areas without evidence of enamel dissolution. XE resulted in etched enamel areas with mild intraprismatic exposure of crystallites. Phosphoric acid in SB resulted in deep enamel etching. CONCLUSIONS Only AP, an aggressive self-etch adhesive, showed enamel morphological features that resemble those created by etch & rinse adhesives. S3 and SE were the only self-etch adhesives that did not result in dentin interfacial debonding.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purposes of this study were to assess the shear bond strength, the surface characteristics, and the adhesive remnant index scores of teeth prepared for bonding with erbium, chromium doped: yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser etching, and to compare laser etching with phosphoric-acid etching and a self-etching primer. METHODS Sixty-four premolars, extracted for orthodontic purposes, were randomly divided into 4 groups, and a different method was used to prepare the tooth enamel in each group for bonding: irradiation for 15 seconds with a 0.75-W Er,Cr:YSGG laser; irradiation for 15 seconds with a 1.5-W Er,Cr:YSGG laser; etching with 37% phosphoric acid; application of a self-etching primer. After surface preparation, standard edgewise stainless steel premolar brackets were bonded; 1 tooth in each group was not bonded and was examined under a scanning electron microscopic. The brackets were debonded 24 hours later; shear bond strengths were measured, and adhesive remnant index scores were recorded. RESULTS Irradiation with the 0.75-W laser produced lower shear bond strengths than the other methods. No statistically significant differences were found between 1.5-W laser irradiation, phosphoric-acid etching, and self-etching primer. Adhesive remnant scores were compared with the chi-square test, and statistically significant differences were found between all groups; when the 0.75-W laser irradiation group was excluded, no statistically significant differences were observed. CONCLUSIONS Irradiation with a 1.50-W laser produced sufficient etching for orthodontic bonding, but irradiation with the 0.75-W laser did not.

Abstract
Numerous simplified adhesives have been introduced to the dental market within the last few years, sometimes without comprehensive testing to validate the performance claimed by the respective manufacturers. Mild self-etch adhesives are unable to etch enamel to provide adequate retention for bonded restorations. Although high early resin-dentin bond strength values can be achieved with some self-etch adhesives, their resistance to thermal and mechanical stresses over time is disappointing. In light of the current drawbacks attributed to all-in-one self-etch adhesives, etch-and-rinse adhesives are still the benchmark for dental adhesion in routine clinical use. This article summarizes current issues and factors related to the performance of adhesives.
