Effect of local zoledronate delivery on osseointegration: a systematic review of preclinical studies

Osteoporosis poses a major public health challenge, and it is characterized by low bone mass, deterioration of the microarchitecture of bone tissue, causing a consequent increase in bone fragility and susceptibility to fractures and complicating bone fixation, particularly screw implantation. In the present study, our aim was to improve implant stability in osteoporotic bone using a thermoresponsive hyaluronan hydrogel (HA-pNIPAM) to locally deliver the bisphosphonate zoledronic acid (ZOL) to prevent bone resorption and bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2) to induce bone formation. Adult female Wistar rats (n = 36) were divided into 2 treatment groups: one group of SHAM-operated animals and another group that received an ovariectomy (OVX) to induce an osteoporotic state. All animals received a polyetheretherketone (PEEK) screw in the proximal tibia. In addition, subgroups of SHAM or OVX animals received either the HA-pNIPAM hydrogel without or with ZOL/BMP2, placed into the defect site prior to screw implantation. Periprosthetic bone and implant fixation were monitored using longitudinal in vivo microCT scanning post-operatively and at 3, 6, 9, 14, 20 and 28 days. Histological assessment was performed post-mortem. Our data showed that pure hydrogel has no impact of implant fixation The ZOL/BMP2-hydrogel significantly increased bone-implant contact and peri-implant bone fraction, primarily through reduced resorption. STATEMENT OF CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Local delivery of ZOL and BMP2 using a biocompatible hydrogel improved implant stability in osteoporotic bone. This approach could constitute a potent alternative to systemic drug administration and may be useful in avoiding implant loosening in clinical settings.

A randomized, multicenter, double-blinded parallel study to evaluate the safety and performance of zoledronate-coated versus uncoated dental implants in partially edentulous patients

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate patient safety, implants survival and implant stability of the bisphosphonate (zoledronate) as a coating on dental implants in patients requiring oral rehabilitation in the posterior maxilla.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In this multicenter, double-blind, randomized controlled study, 62 patients were randomized to receive either zoledronate-coated or uncoated control implants in the premolar or molar area of the maxilla, using a one stage-protocol. Due to dropouts and exclusion 49 patients completed the study. The implants were examined by resonance frequency analysis (RFA) using an implant stability quotient (ISQ) scale at the time of insertion, and at 8 weeks, and after 12 weeks prior to prosthetic restoration. Radiographs were taken prior to surgery, directly after insertion, and during the follow-up at 12 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year to analyze changes in marginal bone levels (MBL). Finally, all complications and adverse effects (AE) were observed and recorded.

RESULTS

Out of 62 included patients, 49 patients completed the study. No AE were reported by patients receiving zoledronate-coated implants. There was no statistically significant difference between the zoledronate-coated or uncoated implant groups when comparing ISQ levels at insertion and after 12 weeks of healing, the mean of the ISQ values demonstrated a change of 4.64 (95% confidence interval: 15.46; 5.79, p = 0.43) between the two groups. At 8- and 12-weeks, ISQ values remained stable (range 62-70). Radiographic analysis showed no statistically significant difference in MBL between the two implant groups after 1 year of loading neither at the mesial side (p = 0.99) or the distal side (p = 0.97). MBL for coated implants were 0.57 mm at the mesial side and 0.46 mm at the distal side. For the uncoated implants, MBL was 0.48 mm at the mesial side and 0.47 mm at the distal side.

CONCLUSION

The zoledronate-coated dental implants are safe to use in a one-stage surgery protocol in patients requiring oral rehabilitation in the posterior maxilla, after 1 year of loading. There were no statically significant changes in implant stability and marginal bone levels measured by intraoral radiographs in comparison to uncoated control implants.

Evaluation of Biocompatibility of New Osteoplastic Xenomaterials Containing Zoledronic Acid and Strontium Ranelate

Background. The problem of improving the functional characteristics of implanted devices and materials used in traumatology and orthopedics is a topical issue. Aim of the study to study biocompatibility of bovine bone matrix xenomaterials modified by zoledronic acid and strontium ranelate when implanted into the bone defect cavity. Methods. The study was performed on 24 male rabbits of the Soviet Chinchilla breed. Test blocks of bone matrix were implanted into the cavity of bone defects of the femur. Group 1 animals (n = 8, control group) were implanted with bone xenogenic material (Bio-Ost osteoplastic matrix). Group 2 animals (n = 8) were implanted with bone xenogenic material impregnated with zoledronic acid. Group 3 animals (n = 8) were implanted with bone xenogeneic material impregnated with strontium ranelate. Supercritical fluid extraction technology was used to purify the material and impregnate it with zoledronic acid and strontium ranelate. Radiological, pathomorphological, histological and laboratory (hematology and blood biochemistry) diagnostic methods were used to assess biocompatibility. Follow-up period was 182 days after implantation. Results. It was found out that on the 182nd day after implantation the median area of the newly-formed bone tissue in the defect modeling area in Group 1 was 79%, in Group 2 0%, in Group 3 67%. In Group 2 the maximum area by this period was filled with connective tissue 77%. Median relative area of implanted material fragments in Group 1 was 4%, in Group 2 23%, in Group 3 15%. No infection or material rejection was observed in animals of all groups. There were no signs of intoxication or prolonged systemic inflammatory reaction. Laboratory parameters did not change significantly over time. One animal in each group experienced one-time increase in C-reactive protein level against the background of leukocytosis. Two animals in Group 1 had a slight migration of implanted material under the skin, one animal developed arthritis of the knee joint. Conclusion. Osteoplastic materials based on bovine bone xenomatrix and filled with zoledronic acid and strontium ranelate have acceptable values of biocompatibility including their safety profile.

Do Systemic Diseases and Medications Influence Dental Implant Osseointegration and Dental Implant Health? An Umbrella Review

The aim of this umbrella review is to evaluate what are the most common medications and systemic diseases that can affect bone-implant integration, the success rate and survival rate of dental implants, peri-implant tissue health, and implant loss. Systematic reviews, with meta-analysis or not, about how systemic diseases and medications influence dental implant osseointegration, survival rate, success rate, and peri-implant diseases, published only in the English language, are electronically searched across the most important scientific databases. The present umbrella review includes eight systematic reviews, and osteoporosis and diabetes are the most investigated pathologies. Systemic diseases, such as neurologic disorders, HIV, hypothyroidism, cardiovascular diseases, and drugs, such as beta blockers, anti-hypertensives, or diuretics do not show a decreased rate of implant osseointegration. It seems that drugs, such as proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) or serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), negatively affect implant osseointegration. Few studies compare the effects of drugs and systemic diseases on the parameters considered in this overview. It is important to underline how the results of this review need to be validated with subsequent and more reviews.

Dental implants osseointegration in patients with osteoporosis

The successful use of surgical and medical methods of jaw bone tissue restoration has been convincingly confirmed in clinical practice. At the same time, technologies are being developed to improve the osseointegration of dental implants in patients with osteoporosis. The use of various implant coatings, as well as systemic therapy, demonstrate the emergence of new directions in the treatment of patients with partial or complete secondary edentulism with concomitant osteoporosis. This trend is relevant in modern medicine . Information was obtained from the PubMed database, using the keywords «osteoporosis» and «osseointegration» and «dental implantation» and «zoledronic acid» from 2016 to 2022. Articles were selected based on experimental work. Numerous studies have shown that bone tissue is an effective indicator of osteoporotic changes. The main changes in bone tissue in osteoporosis are emphasized - a decrease in bone volume, deterioration of the microarchitecture of the trabecular bone and processes that prevent osseointegration - loss of bone mass, a significant decrease in the percentage of contact in the implant-bone complex. Methods of dealing with the negative impact on the operation of dental implantation have been identified. In a review of studies on the systemic administration of drugs based on bisphosphonates, an increase in the osseointegration of dental implants was revealed, the systemic administration of zoledronic acid preparations significantly increased the formation of new bone, which in turn contributed to the elimination of such a negative effect of osteoporosis as bone resorption. In addition to the systemic administration of bisphosphonates, experimental studies describe the topical application of bisphosphonates in the form of various implant coatings. Topical application of bisphosphonates also contributed to increased osseointegration. Microstructured coated implants showed less marginal bone loss compared to uncoated implants. Conclusion. The use of dental implants with modified macro- and microrelief, as well as systemic drug therapy, remains the main direction of scientific research that contributes to the optimization of osseointegration of dental implants.

Effect of Locally Administered Denosumab on Bone Graft Healing in Rabbit Critical-Size Calvarial Defects

BACKGROUND/AIM

Denosumab is a human monoclonal immunoglobulin G2 antibody developed from the ovarian cells of Chinese hamsters. We aimed to histomorphometrically and radiologically evaluate the effects of xenografts used with local denosumab on the healing of defect sites using rabbit skulls.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Two 10-mm diameter critical-size defects were created in 16 rabbits. The defect areas were filled with xenografts and xenograft + 3 mg denosumab in the control and denosumab groups (DEN), respectively. We evaluated new bone, residual graft, soft tissue areas, and bone volume in 4- and 8-week study groups.

RESULTS

Histomorphometrically, there were no statistically significant differences between groups at both 4 and 8 weeks regarding residual graft, new bone, and soft tissue area (p > 0.05). The 4-week residual graft control group values were significantly higher than the 8-week values (p < 0.05). The soft tissue area was significantly greater in the 4-week compared with the 8-week DEN group (p < 0.05). The radiologically measured total bone volume was significantly greater in the 8-week specimens than in the 4-week specimens (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

In this study, denosumab used locally with bone grafts, showed no direct effect on new and total bone volume.

Effect of Primary Stabilisation on Osseointegration of Implants With Local and Systemic Zoledronic Acid Application

ABSTRACT

Primary stabilization (PS) is defined as initial tight fit during the surgical placement of an implant. Tight implant placement is quite difficult in cases where bone quality and quantity are insufficient. Zoledronic acid (ZA) is a powerful bisphosphonate that prevents bone resorption. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of local and systemic ZA application on osseointegration in titanium implants with and without PS. Male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into 2 main groups, with PS, PS + (n = 24), and without primary stabilisation, PS - (n = 24). These main groups were divided into control (n = 8), 2 mg/1 mL local ZA (n = 8) and 0.1 mg/kg systemic ZA (n = 8) groups. All of the subjects were sacrificed after a 4-week recovery period. Bone implant connection (BIC) and thread filling (TF) (%) of the samples was analyzed according to the non-decalcified histological analysis method. In terms of BIC percentages and TF, statistically significant differences were found between the groups with and without PS and between the ZA treatment groups (P < 0.05). The common effect of PS and ZA use on the percentage of BIC was found to be statistically significant (P < 0.05). The common effect of PS and acid type on TF was not statistically significant (P < 0.05). Within the limitations of this study, it may be concluded that systemic and local administration of ZA may increase implant osseointegration.

Methods of Topical Administration of Drugs and Biological Active Substances for Dental Implants-A Narrative Review

Dental implants are, nowadays, established surgical devices for the restoration of lost teeth. Considered as an alternative for traditional prosthetic appliances, dental implants surpass them in reliability and patient feedback. Local drug delivery around the implants promotes osseointegration and reduces peri-implantitis. However, there are currently no methods of a multiple, precise topical administration of drugs to the implant area. Engineering coatings on the implants, drug application on carriers during implantation, or gingival pockets do not meet all requirements of dental surgeons. Therefore, there is a need to create porous implants and other medical devices that will allow a multiple drug delivery at a controlled dose and release profile without traumatic treatment. Due to the growing demand for the use of biologically active agents to support dental implant treatment at its various stages (implant placement, long-term use of dental superstructures, treatment of the peri-implant conditions) and due to the proven effectiveness of the topical application of pharmacological biologically active agents to the implant area, the authors would like to present a review and show the methods and devices that can be used by clinicians for local drug administration to facilitate dental implant treatment. Our review concludes that there is a need for research in the field of inventions such as new medical devices or implants with gradient solid-porous structures. These devices, in the future, will enable to perform repeatable, controllable, atraumatic, and repeatable injections of active factors that may affect the improvement of osteointegration and the longer survival of implants, as well as the treatment of peri-implantitis.

Bisphosphonates in Dentistry – State of the Art

Bisphosphonates remain the most used and most effective drugs for the treatment of systemic bone diseases followed by bone resorption. Although their side effects in a form of alveolar bone osteonecrosis have been reported, bisphosphonates have a potential of being used in the treatment of the most common oral diseases followed by alveolar bone resorption such as peri-implantitis, periapical lesions, and periodontitis. The aim of this article was to review the most recent research regarding the use of bisphosphonates in the field of dentistry. The results of studies indicate that bisphosphonate use in the treatment of peri-implantitis, periapical lesions, and periodontitis can reduce alveolar bone resorption and contribute to bone preservation. However, the most beneficial way of their application in the treatment of these oral diseases remain to be determined.

The influence of local delivery of bisphosphonate on osseointegration of dental implants

Data sourcesThe databases searched were the Cochrane Library, PubMed/Medline, Embase, ISI Web of Knowledge, Scopus and SIGLE OpenGrey. Databases were searched with no restriction on year of publication or language.Study selectionRandomised controlled clinical trials (RCTs), prospective and retrospective studies, case-control studies and case series studies in humans were included. The test group received implants with the local delivery of bisphosphonates, controls received implants only. Studies involving patients with metabolic bone diseases or undergoing systemic medications for bone bio-modulation or immunosuppression or with relevant pathologies were excluded.Data extraction and synthesisThree authors independently selected studies with disagreements being resolved by discussion. Study quality was assessed by two reviewers using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale (NOS).ResultsThree articles published between 2010 and 2013 met the selection criteria. Sample size ranged from five to 39. Mean age was 52.6 to 66. Efficacy was assessed using radiographic analysis, implant stability quotient (ISQ) and histological assessment. Despite methodological differences, all articles reported positive results for osseointegration when a local bisphosphonate was used, either on the implant surface or direct application of a pharmacologically active compound at the surgical site or in the form of a gel directly at the surgical site. Greater implant stability, better implant survival rates and reduced peri-implant bone loss were recorded in the test groups compared with controls. As well as formation of lamellar bone trabeculae in intimate contact with the implants.ConclusionsThe local use of a bisphosphonate appears to favour the osseointegration of titanium implants in humans.

Biomodulation of an implant for enhanced bone-implant anchorage

Aseptic loosening of implants is the major cause for revision surgery. By modulating the bone-implant interface, early bone-implant anchorage could be improved. Implant surface manipulation by the addition of osteopromotive molecules locally and systemically to promote implant integration has been described with limited success. This study describes a novel approach by making the implant capable of biologically modulating its surroundings. It was hypothesized that the early implant fixation would improve by filling the interior of the implant with a carrier providing spatio-temporal release of bone active drugs with known osteogenic effect. The implant consisted of a threaded polyether ether ketone (PEEK) hollow chamber with holes at the bottom. The implant was filled with a calcium sulphate (CaS)/hydroxyapatite (HA) carrier, delivering two bone active molecules; zoledronic acid (ZA) and bone morphogenic protein-2 (BMP-2). At first, a rat abdominal muscle pouch model indicated a sustained in-vivo release of both ¹²⁵I-rhBMP-2 (57%) and ¹⁴C-ZA (22%) from the CaS/HA carrier over a period of 4-weeks. The biomodulated implant was then inserted in the proximal tibia in rats with the following experimental groups: G1) Empty implant, G2) Implant + CaS/HA, G3) Implant + CaS/HA + ZA and G4) Implant + CaS/HA + ZA + rhBMP-2. Significantly higher bone volume (BV) was seen around the implant in groups G3 (3.3 ± 0.7 mm³) and G4 (3.1 ± 0.7 mm³) compared to the control (1.3 ± 0.4 mm³) using micro-computed tomography and qualitative histology. Group G3, also exhibited significantly higher pull-out force and absorbed energy when compared to the control group G1. These findings indicate that a low dose of ZA alone, released in a controlled manner from within a fenestrated implant is enough to improve implant anchorage without the need of adding rhBMP-2. This simple method of using a fenestrated implant containing a ceramic carrier releasing bone active molecules improved bone anchorage and could clinically reduce prosthetic failure. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Aseptic loosening remains as a major cause for implant revisions and early reaction of surrounding bone to the prosthesis is important for longevity. A novel approach to enhance early bone-implant anchorage is presented. The implant is filled with a carrier providing controlled release of bone active molecules. In an animal model, a calcium sulphate (CaS)/hydroxyapatite (HA) carrier was used to provide a spatio-temporal release of bone morphogenic protein-2 (BMP-2) and zoledronic acid (ZA). Significantly better bone-implant integration was achieved using ZA alone, thereby eliminating the need for adding BMP-2. The developed method of implant biomodulation holds potential to prevent implant loosening and is an alternative to prosthetic coatings or systemic drug treatment. Importantly, all constituents are approved for clinical use.

Low-dose zoledronate for the treatment of bone metastasis secondary to prostate cancer

Background

Bisphosphonates (BPs) including zoledronate (zol) have become standard care for bone metastases as they effectively inhibit tumor-induced osteolysis and associated pain. Several studies have also suggested that zol has direct anti-tumor activity. Systemic administration at high doses is the current approach to deliver zol, yet it has been associated with debilitating side effects. Local therapeutic delivery offers the ability to administer much lower total dosage, while at the same time maintaining sustained high-local drug concentration directly at the target treatment site. Here, we aimed to assess effects of lower doses of zol on bone metastases over a longer time.

Methods

Prostate cancer cell line LAPC4 and prostate-induced bone metastasis cells were treated with zol at 1, 3 and 10 µM for 7 days. Following treatment, cell proliferation was assessed using Almarblue^®, Vybrant MTT^®, and Live/Dead^® viability/cytotoxicity assays. Additionally, cell migration and invasion were carried out using Falcon™ cell culture inserts and Cultrex^® 3D spheroid cell invasion assays respectively.

Results

We show that treatment with 3–10 µM zol over 7-days significantly decreased cell proliferation in both the prostate cancer cell line LAPC4 and cells from spine metastases secondary to prostate cancer. Using the same low-dose and longer time course for treatment, we demonstrate that 10 µM zol also significantly inhibits tumor cell migration and 3D-cell growth/invasion.

Conclusions

This project harnesses the potential of using zol at low doses for longer treatment periods, which may be a viable treatment modality when coupled with biomaterials or biodevices for local delivery.

Impact of a zoledronate coating on early post-surgical implant stability and marginal bone resorption in the maxilla-A split-mouth randomized clinical trial

OBJECTIVES

The objective of this clinical study was to evaluate the effect of a bisphosphonate coating on a titanium implant on the implant stability quotient (ISQ) and the radiographic marginal bone levels at implants during early healing (2-8 weeks).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In a randomized double-blind trial with internal controls, 16 patients received a dental implant coated with zoledronate and one uncoated implant as a control. The coated and uncoated implants which were visually indistinguishable were bone level titanium implants with a moderately rough surface and a microthreaded neck. ISQ values were obtained at insertion and at 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks. Radiographs were obtained at insertion and at 8 weeks. The primary outcome was the difference in ISQ values between the coated implants and the control implants at 4 and 6 weeks, corrected for insertion values. The secondary outcome was loss of marginal bone level from insertion to 8 weeks.

RESULTS

Implant stability quotient values remained largely constant over the 8 weeks, and there was no significant difference between coated and uncoated implants at any time point. There was 0.12 (SD 0.10) mm marginal bone loss at the control implants and 0.04 (SD 0.08) mm at the coated implants. The difference was 0.17 mm; SD 0.14; p < 0.006). On blind qualitative scoring, 13 of the 15 control implants and two of 15 coated implants showed small marginal bone defects (p = 0.003).

CONCLUSIONS

There were no statistically significant differences observed in ISQ values between the coated and uncoated implants during the early healing. There was less marginal bone loss at the coated implants.

Local delivery of a zoledronate solution improves osseointegration of titanium implants in a rat distal femur model

This study aimed to determine whether locally applied anti-resorptive agents acetazolamide or zoledronic acid would improve mechanical stability in implant osseointegration when applied as a solution within the medullary canal. Thirty-three rats received titanium-implants bilaterally in their intramedullary femoral canals. Prior to implantation, animals received 0.1 ml saline, 1 mM acetazolamide solution, or 0.7 mM zoledronic acid solution directly into the medullary cavity. The control group only received saline within the medullary canal while the treatment groups only received the respective treatment to which they were randomized. Animals were allowed to heal 4 weeks, at which time they were euthanized and femurs isolated for mechanical and radiographic evaluation. Push-out force to failure increased 152% in the zoledronic acid group relative to the control. There was no significant difference in push-out force with acetazolamide relative to control. Also, zoledronic acid increased metaphyseal bone volume fraction 46% and increased metaphyseal bone-implant contact 58% relative to the control. Recent research exploring local injection of medications to improve implant osseointegration and minimize systemic-effects has failed to quantitatively evaluate implant fixation strength on non-hydroxyapatite coated implants or implants without previous bone compaction. This study demonstrated that a simple injection of zoledronic acid into the medullary canal, rather than coatings or commercial gels, can increase fixation strength of an uncoated titanium-implant. Our findings indicate simple injection of zoledronic acid in saline solution has the potential for improving fixation of uncemented joint implants. Clinical Significance: Intramedullary injection of local bisphosphonate solutions could be implemented to improve osseointegration in cementless arthroplasty. © 2018 Orthopaedic Research Society. Influence of nicotine on orthodontic tooth movement: A systematic review of experimental studies in rats

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this systematic review was to assess the impact of nicotine administration on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM).

METHODS

A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, MEDLINE (OVID) and Web of Knowledge databases and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed. Studies evaluating the influence of nicotine on OTM, and with the presence of a control group (OTM without nicotine administration), were included. Quality assessment of the selected studies was performed following the Animal Research Reporting in Vivo Experiment (ARRIVE) guidelines.

RESULTS

Six of the initially identified 108 articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were selected. All included studies were performed in male rats, which underwent OTM with or without nicotine administration. Since there was a variation among the included studies regarding nicotine dosage and the duration and magnitude of force application during OTM only a qualitative analysis could be performed. The studies reported that nicotine administration accelerated OTM by inducing alveolar bone resorption around the moving teeth. It was also found that nicotine increased root resorption during experimental OTM. More standardized animal research or clinical studies are warranted to further evaluate the impact of nicotine on OTM.

CONCLUSIONS

On an experimental level, nicotine exposure in rats jeopardizes OTM by increasing alveolar bone loss and root resorption. From a clinical perspective, further studies are needed to assess the impact of habitual use of tobacco products on OTM.

Influence of involuntary cigarette smoke inhalation on osseointegration: a systematic review and meta-analysis of preclinical studies

There are no studies that have systematically reviewed the influence of involuntary cigarette smoke inhalation (ICSI) on the stability of implants. The aim of the present study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of preclinical studies that assessed the influence of involuntary cigarette smoke inhalation ICSI on osseointegration. Indexed databases (PubMed, Google-Scholar, Scopus, EMBASE, and Web of Knowledge) were searched till September 2017. Titles and abstracts of studies identified using the above-described protocol were independently screened by 2 authors. Full-texts of studies judged by title and abstract to be relevant were independently evaluated for the stated eligibility criteria. Nine studies were included. Six studies showed that ICSI compromised bone area contact around implants. In 4 studies, peri-implant bone mineral density was significantly higher in the control group than among subjects exposed to ICSI. For the effects of ICSI on the osseointegration of dental implants, significant differences could be observed for bone-to-implant contact for test subjects in cancellous (Z=-4.08, p<0.001) and cortical bone (Z=-4.31, p<0.001) respectively. ICSI may negatively influence osseointegration of dental implants. It is imperative to educate patients about the negative effects of passive smoking on dental and systemic health.

Surface Modification of Direct-Current and Radio-Frequency Oxygen Plasma Treatments Enhance Cell Biocompatibility

The sand-blasting and acid etching (SLA) method can fabricate a rough topography for mechanical fixation and long-term stability of titanium implant, but can not achieve early bone healing. This study used two kinds of plasma treatments (Direct-Current and Radio-Frequency plasma) to modify the SLA-treated surface. The modification of plasma treatments creates respective power range and different content functional OH groups. The results show that the plasma treatments do not change the micron scale topography, and plasma-treated specimens presented super hydrophilicity. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)-examined result showed that the functional OH content of the RF plasma-treated group was higher than the control (SLA) and DC treatment groups. The biological responses (protein adsorption, cell attachment, cell proliferation, and differentiation) promoted after plasma treatments, and the cell responses, have correlated to the total content of amphoteric OH groups. The experimental results indicated that plasma treatments can create functional OH groups on SLA-treated specimens, and the RF plasma-treated SLA implant thus has potential for achievement of bone healing in early stage of implantation.
