Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of bioactive glass (BAG) in preventing dental erosion in primary teeth. METHODS Enamel and dentin specimens (2 × 2 × 2 mm) were obtained from extracted primary teeth, which were randomly divided into the following groups based on the pretreatments (n = 12): DW (deionized water), NaF (2 % sodium fluoride), 2BAG (2 % BAG), 4BAG (4 % BAG), 6BAG (6 % BAG), and 8BAG (8 % BAG). The specimens were immersed in the respective solutions for 2 min and subjected to in vitro erosive challenges (4 × 5 min/d) for 5 d. The erosive enamel loss (EEL), erosive dentin loss (EDL), and the thickness of the demineralized organic matrix (DOM) were measured using a contact profilometer. The surface microhardness (SMH) was measured, and the percentage of SMH loss (%SMHL) was calculated. The surface morphology and mineral composition were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), respectively. RESULTS After the erosive challenges, the EEL, EDL, and%SMHL of the 2BAG, 4BAG, 6BAG, and 8BAG groups significantly reduced, with the greatest reduction was observed in the 6BAG (EEL: 6.5 ± 0.2 μm;%SMHL in enamel: 12.8 ± 2.6; EDL: 7.9 ± 0.3 μm; %SMHL in dentin: 22.1 ± 2.7) and 8BAG groups (EEL: 6.4 ± 0.4 μm;%SMHL in enamel: 11.0 ± 1.9; EDL: 7.8 ± 0.5 μm; %SMHL in dentin: 22.0 ± 2.5) (P < 0.05). With increasing BAG concentrations, the number of surface deposits containing Ca, P, and Si increased. CONCLUSIONS 6BAG was the most effective for preventing dental erosion in primary teeth and showed a particularly strong potential for dentin erosion prevention. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Bioactive glass, especially at a 6 % concentration, has proven effective in reducing erosive tooth wear and surface microhardness loss while also protecting demineralized organic matrix in primary dentin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Erosive tooth wear is a multifactorial and common condition in children. AIM This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the prevalence and key risk factors for erosive tooth wear in the primary dentition of children up to 7 years of age. DESIGN Electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science) were searched in February 2023 for observational studies reporting prevalence and anamnestic risk factors. Additionally, a manual hand search was performed. Meta-analyses were conducted for the prevalence and odds ratios of identified risk factors. Risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale modified for cross-sectional studies. RESULTS A total of 26 sources, reporting on 23 studies, were included in the systematic review. The overall estimated prevalence of children with erosive tooth wear in the primary dentition amounted to 35.6% (95% CI: 24.8-48.1). Anamnestic factors were structured into domains. Meta-analyses revealed gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD; padj. = .008; OR = 1.98, 95% CI: 1.37-2.87), consumption of acidic food (padj. < .001; OR = 5.14, 95% CI: 3.56-7.42) and acidic drinks (padj. < .001; OR = 6.90, 95% CI: 4.64-10.25), holding beverages in the mouth while drinking (padj. = .035; OR = 1.82, 95% CI: 1.26-2.63), and snacking regularly (padj. = .041; OR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.18-2.10) to be significantly associated with erosive tooth wear. CONCLUSION Future research should use standardized questionnaires to assess erosive tooth wear and its underlying risk factors (PROSPERO: CRD4202339776).

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the prevalence of tooth wear and associated factors in adults from the 1982 Pelotas Birth Cohort. METHODS A subsample of the 5,914 individuals from the 1982 Pelotas Birth Cohort was randomly selected to be interviewed and clinically examined at the age of 31. Tooth wear was evaluated using a simplified version of the Tooth Wear Index (TWI), considering the absence or presence of tooth wear in dentin of first molars and anterior teeth (incisors and canines). Independent variables were socioeconomic, demographic, unhealthy behavior, and mental health. Crude and adjusted Poisson regression models were employed. A significant level of P ≤ 0.05 was adopted. RESULTS A total of 537 individuals were evaluated. A tooth wear prevalence of 61.6% was observed. Females presented a statistically significant lower tooth wear in dentin prevalence ratio (PR) compared to males in the adjusted analysis (PR 0.76; 95% CI: 0.67-0.86). Acid beverage consumption (PR 1.22; 95% CI: 1.01-1.49) and consumption of alcoholic beverages (PR 1.19; 95% CI: 1.04-1.35) were positively associated with tooth wear. CONCLUSION Almost 2/3 of the surveyed individuals presented tooth wear in dentin. Being a male, higher consumption of alcohol and acidic beverages were factors associated with tooth wear. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE There was a high prevalence of tooth wear in dentin in the adult population. Data has also shown the etiological complexity of tooth wear, reinforcing the importance of an early diagnosis and the establishment of preventive measures to decrease the potentially hazardous effect of tooth wear over time.

Risk prediction models for erosive wear in preschool-aged children: a prospective study. BMC Oral Health 2022; 22:312. Abstract
Background Despite increasing prevalence, age-specific risk predictive models for erosive tooth wear in preschool-age children have not been developed. Identification of at-risk groups and the timely introduction of behavioural change or treatment will stop the progression of erosive wear in the permanent dentition. This study aimed to identify age-specific risk factors for erosive wear. Distinct risk prediction models for 3-year-old and 5-year-old children were developed. Methods A prospective cohort study included school-based clinical examinations and parent administered questionnaires for consented 3 and 5-year-old healthy children. Calibrated examiners measured the following health parameters under standardised conditions: erosion, using the Basic Erosive Wear Examination Index (BEWE), caries using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS), plaque and calculus according to the British Association for the Study of Community Dentistry (BASCD) scores, dental traumatic injuries and soft tissue lesions, salivary testing and BMI. Other health conditions were collected via a parent-administered questionnaire that explored oral- and general-health. Non parametric tests were utilised to explore the temporal relation of erosion with, demographic factors, oral hygiene habits, general health and dietary habits. Variables showing significance with a difference in BEWE cumulative score over time were utilised to develop two risk prediction models. The models were evaluated by Receiver Operating Characteristics analysis. Results Risk factors for the 3-year-old cohort (N = 336) included erosive wear (χ2(1, 92) = 12.829, p < 0.001), district (χ2(5, 92) = 17.032, p = 0.004) and family size (χ2(1, 92) = 4.547, p = 0.033). Risk factors for the 5-year-old cohort (N = 441) also included erosive wear (χ2(1, 144) = 4.768, p = 0.029), gender (χ2(1, 144) = 19.399, p < 0.001), consumption of iced tea (χ2(1, 144) = 8.872, p = 0.003) and dry mouth (χ2(1, 144) = 9.598, p = 0.002). Conclusions Predictive risk factors for 3-year-old children are based on demographic factors and are distinct from those for 5-year-old children based on biological and behavioural factors. Erosive wear is a risk factor for further wear in both age cohorts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of three remineralizing agents on dental erosion in primary teeth. METHODS Forty primary molars were randomly divided into four groups (n = 10 each): self-assembling peptide (P11-4 ), casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium fluoride phosphate (CPP-ACFP), sodium fluoride (NaF) and artificial saliva (AS; control). The erosion-like formation was created by immersing the samples in citric acid (4 × 2 min, pH 2.3) and AS (4 × 2 h, pH 7). The eroded samples were then treated with remineralizing agents and subjected to further erosion consisting of 15 cycles (3x/8-h interval) of immersion in citric acid and AS for 6 s each. Alterations in the mineral content and morphology of the samples were quantified using a microhardness tester and atomic force microscope. RESULTS All agents had a significant remineralization effect on eroded primary tooth enamel. After further erosive challenge, enamel loss in the CPP-ACFP group was found to be significantly lower than in all other groups, and no significant difference was found between the P11-4 and NaF groups. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that all tested materials had remineralization ability, and CPP-ACFP had a superior effect in inhibiting enamel loss due to dental erosion in primary teeth. © 2022 Australian Dental Association.

Abstract
Background: Asthma is a long-lasting disease that affects large number of the society and could impact on the oral health leading to increase in the needs of prevention and treatment. Currently, the prevalence of childhood asthma in Saudi Arabia is ranging from 9% to 33%. Objective: the objective was to evaluate dental erosion in control children and those with asthma. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, with a sample of 100 children aged 3–12 years. Equally distribution of subjects was between the asthmatic and non-asthmatic group, at Prince Sattam Bin Abdulaziz University Dental Clinics, Alkharj, Saudi Arabia. The assessment consisted of an oral examination assessing erosive wear according to the American Academy of Pediatrics 2018 guidelines and a questionnaire to the parents/guardians addressing the background details and information about the child asthma. Results: Among 12 (24%) asthmatic children and 9 (18%) non-asthmatic children had dental erosion. In the adjusted analysis, no association was found between asthma and erosion. It has been shown that oral hygiene may have an effect occurrence or severity of erosion; brushing teeth once or more per day appeared to have less incidence of dental erosion compared with those not brushing their teeth regularly. Conclusions: This article provided no additional data than that given earlier, where no correlation was observed between asthma and dental erosion in children aged from 3 to 12 years.

Abstract
AbstractThe current review assesses the literature concerning the etiology of primary teeth staining and discoloration. The appearance of the dentition is of concern to many children and their caregivers seeking dental treatment as the color of the teeth is of aesthetic importance. The correct diagnosis of the cause of the discoloration is important as, invariably, it has a profound effect on treatment outcomes. It would seem reasonable, therefore, that dental practitioners understand the etiology of tooth discoloration to make a diagnosis and enable appropriate treatment to be conducted. Knowledge of the etiology of tooth staining is of importance to the dental practitioner to explain the patient the exact nature of the condition. In some instances, the mechanism of staining affects the outcome of the treatment and influences the options the dentist will be able to offer. Many of these contributing factors are preventable if parents are educated, managed by professional interventions, or provide a multidisciplinary approach. In this review, we highlight the importance of children smiles and the difference between primary and permanent teeth. We discuss the different types of primary teeth staining and discoloration and whether it is intrinsic or extrinsic, as well as the different impacts of some conditions on primary teeth compared with permanent teeth.
