Bioaerosols from land-applied biosolids: issues and needs

Bioaerosols are a vehicle for the dissemination of human and animal pathogens. Because of land-filling costs and the ban on ocean dumping of municipal biosolids, land application of biosolids and animal manure is increasing all over the globe. There is no doubt that the creation, generation, and disposal of human and animal wastes increases the aerosolization potential of a wide variety of microbial pathogens and related pollutants. In an attempt to address public health issues associated with the land application of municipal biosolids, the U.S. National Research Council (Washington, D.C.) published a report on this issue in 2002. This paper focuses on the current information and technology gaps related to estimating the public health risks associated with bioaerosols during the land application of biosolids.

Bioaerosols from municipal and animal wastes: background and contemporary issues

Global population increases, coupled with intensive animal and livestock production practices, have resulted in the generation, accumulation, and disposal of large amounts of wastes around the world. Aerosolization of microbial pathogens, endotoxins, odors, and dust particles is an inevitable consequence of the generation and handling of waste material. Bioaerosols can be a source of microbial pathogens, endotoxins, and other allergens. Given the close proximity of population centers to concentrated animal-rearing operations and municipal treatment facilities in many parts of the world, there is concern regarding the occupational and public health impacts associated with the exposure to bioaerosols from municipal and animal wastes. Major advances have been made in our understanding of bioaerosol characteristics, identifying the hazards, and identifying possible human and animal health links with aerosolized pathogens and allergens. However, significant knowledge and technology gaps still exist. These include a lack of clear understanding of the fate and transport of bioaerosols, especially within the open environment, an inability to accurately predict the health risks associated with bioaerosolized pathogens, and a lack of standardized bioaerosol sampling protocols, and efficient samplers. This review synthesizes the information related to bioaerosols and addresses the contemporary issues associated with bioaerosols from municipal and animal wastes, with a focus on pathogens.

Bacterial aerosol emission rates from municipal wastewater aeration tanks

In this report we describe the results of a study conducted to determine the rates of bacterial aerosol emission from the surfaces of the aeration tanks of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago John E. Egan Water Reclamation Plant. This study was accomplished by conducting test runs in which Andersen six-stage viable samplers were used to collect bacterial aerosol samples inside a walled tower positioned above an aeration tank liquid surface at the John E. Egan Water Reclamation Plant. The samples were analyzed for standard plate counts (SPC), total coliforms (TC), fecal coliforms, and fecal streptococci. Two methods of calculation were used to estimate the bacterial emission rate. The first method was a conventional stack emission rate calculation method in which the measured air concentration of bacteria was multiplied by the air flow rate emanating from the aeration tanks. The second method was a more empirical method in which an attempt was made to measure all of the bacteria emanating from an isolated area (0.37 m2) of the aeration tank surface over time. The data from six test runs were used to determine bacterial emission rates by both calculation methods. As determined by the conventional calculation method, the average SPC emission rate was 1.61 SPC/m2/s (range, 0.66 to 2.65 SPC/m2/s). As determined by the empirical calculation method, the average SPC emission rate was 2.18 SPC/m2/s (range, 1.25 to 2.66 SPC/m2/s). For TC, the average emission rate was 0.20 TC/m2/s (range, 0.02 to 0.40 TC/m2/s) when the conventional calculation method was used and 0.27 TC/m2/s (range, 0.04 to 0.53 TC/m2/s) when the empirical calculation method was used.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Comparison of coliphage and bacterial aerosols at a wastewater spray irrigation site

Microbiological aerosols were measured on a spray irrigation site at Fort Huachuca, Ariz. Indigenous bacteria and tracer bacteriophage were sampled from sprays of chlorinated and unchlorinated secondary-treatment wastewaters during day and night periods. Aerosol dispersal and downwind migration were determined. Bacterial and coliphage f2 aerosols were sampled by using Andersen viable type stacked-sieve and high-volume electrostatic precipitator samplers. Bacterial standard plate counts averaged 2.4 x 10(5) colony-forming units per ml in unchlorinated effluents. Bacterial aerosols reached 500 bacteria per m3 at 152 m downwind and 10,500 bacteria per m3 at 46m. Seeded coliphage f2 averaged 4.0 x 10(5) plaque-forming units per ml in the effluent and were detected 563 m downwind. Downwind microbial aerosol levels were somewhat enhanced by nighttime conditions. The median aerodynamic particle size of the microbial aerosols was approximately 5.0 micrometer. Chlorination reduced wastewater bacterial levels 99.97% and reduced aerosol concentrations to near background levels; coliphage f2 was reduced only 95.4% in the chlorinated effluent and was readily measured 137 m downwind. Microbiological source strength an meteorological data were used in conjunction with a dispersion model to generate mathematical predictions of aerosol strength at various sampler locations. The mean calculated survival of aerosolized bacteria (standard plate count) in the range 46 to 76 m downwind was 5.2%, and that of coliphage f2 was 4.3 %.

Isolation and identification of pathogenic microorganisms at wastewater-irrigated fields: ratios in air and wastewater

Samples of air and corresponding wastewater samples were taken at wastewater spray-irrigated fields. The concentrations of salmonellae and enteroviruses present in these samples were determined and compared with those of coliforms, and the ratios between them were calculated. The most common Salmonella serotype in the air was Salmonella ohio, whereas in the wastewater, Salmonella anatum was the most common. Enteroviruses isolated and identified were poliovirus, echovirus, and coxsackievirus type B. From the ratios of salmonellas to coliforms and enteroviruses to coliforms in the air, as compared to these ratios in the wastewater, it was concluded that the suitability of coliforms as an indication of airborne contamination caused by spray irrigation is questionable.

Airborne coliphages from wastewater treatment facilities

The emission (from wastewater treatment plants) of airborne coliphages that form plaques on two strains of Escherichia coli was investigated. Two activated-sludge and two trickling-filter plants were studied. Field sampling procedures used large-volume air samplers with recirculation devices. Coliphages were enumerated by a most-probable-number (MPN) procedure. Temperature, relative humidity, windspeed, and presence of sunlight were monitored. Concurrent samples of sewage were taken during each air-sampling run. Average coliphage levels in the airborne emissions of trickling-filter beds and activated-sludge units were 2.84 X 10(-1) and 3.02 X 10(-1) MPN/m3, respectively, for all positive observations, and sewage liquor concentrations from the sources were 4.48 X 10(5) and 2.94 X 10(6) plaque-forming units/liter, respectively, depending upon the E. coli host used for assay. This work establishes minimal airborne-coliphage concentrations from the plants studied. The procedures employed will be useful in evaluating the animal virus levels in these emissions.
