Effect of pH and Temperature on Adsorption of Dimethyl Phthalate on Carbon Nanotubes in Aqueous Phase

Phenyl-functionalized mesoporous silica materials for the rapid and efficient removal of phthalate esters

Phthalate esters (PAEs) are a group of endocrine disrupting compounds, which have been widely used as plasticizers. To alleviate the environmental and health threats from water resources polluted by PAEs, we prepared phenyl functionalized mesoporous silica materials (ph-SBA-15) were synthesized by a simple post-modification approach for rapid and efficient removal of low concentration of di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) from aqueous solution. Mesostructure, texture, surface chemistry and surface charges were systemically characterized. The obtained ph-SBA-15 possesses a highly ordered mesostructure, a high surface area (418m²/g), uniform mesopores (6.5nm) and high-density organic groups around 11wt.%. Batch adsorption experiments revealed that phenyl modified SBA-15 had an excellent ability to remove DBP with the maximum adsorption capacity up to ∼40mg/g at 25°C. The thermodynamics and kinetics for the adsorption were also investigated, demonstrating an exothermic, multi-layer and fast adsorption process. In addition, DBP adsorption was found to be sensitive to the pH and the uptake was observed to be greatest at around pH 7.0. Furthermore, this material can be effectively regenerated by ethanol.

Adsorption of diethyl phthalate ester to clay minerals

Phthalate esters are a group of plasticizers, which have been widely detected in China's agricultural and industrial soils. In this study, batch adsorption experiments were conducted to investigate the environmental effects on the adsorption of diethyl phthalate ester (DEP) to clay minerals. The results showed that DEP adsorption isotherms were well fitted with the Freundlich model; the interlayer spacing of K(+) saturated montmorillonite (K-mont) was the most important adsorption area for DEP, and di-n-butyl ester (DnBP) was limited to intercalate into the interlayer of K-mont due to the bigger molecular size; there was no significant effect of pH and ionic strength on DEP adsorption to K-mont/Ca-mont, but to Na-mont clay. The adsorption to kaolinite was very limited. Data of X-ray diffraction and FTIR spectra further proved that DEP molecules could intercalate into K-/Ca-mont interlayer, and might interact with clay through H-bonding between carbonyl groups and clay adsorbed water. Coated humic acid on clay surface would enhance DEP adsorption at low concentration, but not at high concentration (eg. Ce>0.26 mM). The calculated adsorption enthalpy (ΔHobs) and adsorption isotherms at varied temperatures showed that DEP could be adsorbed easier as more adsorbed. This study implied that clay type, compound structure, exchangeable cation, soil organic matter and temperature played important roles in phthalate ester's transport in soil.

Soil adsorption studies of a rice herbicide, cyhalofop-butyl, in two texturally different soils of India

The ability of herbicides to be adsorbed by the soil and sediment and their tendency to be desorbed are some of the most important factors affecting soil and water contamination. Therefore, a sorption study was conducted to evaluate the adsorption of cyhalofop-butyl, butyl (2R)-2-[4-(4-cyano-2-fluorophenoxy) phenoxy] propanoate, in the sandy clay loam and clayey soils using a batch equilibrium method. The adsorption of cyhalofop-butyl was found positively related with the clay and organic carbon content. Freundlich constants (Kf) of cyhalofop-butyl in the clayey and sandy clay loam were found to be 13.39 and 2.21, respectively. Sorption coefficients (Koc) and distribution coefficients (Kd) were found to be 265.38 and 2,092.79, and 1.38 and 11.48, for sandy clay loam and clayey soils, respectively. The adsorption isotherm suggested a relatively higher affinity of cyhalofop-butyl to the adsorption sites at low equilibrium concentrations. The low value of the soil organic carbon partition coefficient (Koc) of cyhalofop-butyl in the sandy loam soil suggested its weaker adsorption in soil and thus increased its risk of mobility into water sources; hence, it should be used judiciously to prevent groundwater contamination.
