Determination of Phenolic Compounds and the Antioxidant Capacity of Ximenia parviflora Benth. var. parviflora (Olacaceae) Fruit by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography with Diode Array Detection

Antioxidant, Antibacterial, and Antifungal Activities of the Ethanolic Extract Obtained from Berberis vulgaris Roots and Leaves

This work assessed the phenolic and flavonoid components and their antioxidant, antifungal, and antibacterial effects in the ethanolic extract of barberry leaf and roots. The antibactericidal activity of root and leaf extracts against pathogenic bacteria was tested using agar diffusion and microdilution broth production for the lowest inhibitory concentration (MIC). Berberis vulgaris root and leaf extracts inhibited Staphylococcus aureus ATCC9973, Escherichia coli HB101, Staphylococcus enteritis, and Escherichia coli Cip812. The disc assay technique was used to assess the bactericidal activity of the extracts versus both pathogenic Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains. Hydro alcoholic extract was more effective against bacterial than fungal strains. The results showed that Berberis vulgaris leaf and roots extract had similar antifungal activities. Berberis vulgaris root extract inhibited the mycelial growth of Penicillium verrucosum, Fusarium proliferatum, Aspergillus ochraceous, Aspergillus niger, and Aspergillus flavus. Berberis vulgaris root extract has excellent antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal effects. Berberis vulgaris exhibited antimicrobial activity in vitro, and MIC showed that Berberis vulgaris parts efficiently affected pathogens in vitro. In conclusion, both Berberis vulgaris roots and leaves have considerable antibacterial activity and can be used as a source of antibacterial, antioxidant, and bioactive compounds to benefit human health.

Flavonoids: isolation, characterization, and health benefits

Background

The unique and vast pharmacological activities of flavonoids have made them of research interest. This led to the use of various techniques to isolate and characterize them, intending to determine their potential health benefits.

Main text

The medicinal values of plant-based flavonoids that this literature review tends to summarize the pharmacological activities of these secondary metabolites from 22 selected plant families. The pharmacological shreds of evidence reported in the literature have proven that flavonoids have shown anti-cancer, anti-microbial, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-ulcer, and anti-edematogenic activities. Out of these, 30% showed to have anti-oxidant activity, key in protecting the body against free radicals. Besides, 18% of the references showed anti-microbial and anti-cancer activities. Further literature reports indicated that flavonoids from these families exhibited anti-inflammatory and anti-edematogenic (9%), anti-viral and anti-ulcer (5%), anti-fungal, anti-nociceptive, and anti-histamine (2%).

Conclusion

The pharmacological activities of flavonoids from the various sources reviewed in this study show that the secondary metabolites could provide a scaffold for the development of potent anti-cancer drugs in the future.

Antioxidant Activity of Collagen Extracts Obtained from the Skin and Gills of Oreochromis sp

Efforts aimed at reduction of fishing waste generated during the evisceration and filleting are scarce. The fishing waste is used in the production of low value-added products, such as flours or silages. It is important to visualize an alternative and profitable use of this waste, as it constitutes a serious environmental problem. This research determined the antioxidant properties of collagenous extracts of skin and galls of Oreochromis sp. The raw materials were characterized by proximal chemical analysis. Three treatments were applied to extract the collagen: salt-soluble collagen, acid-soluble collagen (ASC), and pepsin-hydrolyzed collagen (PHC). The collagenous fractions were hydrolyzed (0.1% pepsin). The recovered collagen yield and antioxidant activity were determined to hydrolyzed collagen (HC) and nonhydrolyzed collagen (NHC). The ASC skin showed the highest extraction yield (3.02%). For galls, only the PHC extraction was feasible (0.16%). Antioxidant analysis of NHC did not reveal radical scavenging activities. HC displayed a 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl %RSA of 22.58 (ASC skin) and 10.34% (PHC galls), and a 2,2'-azino-bis[3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid] %RSA of 30.40% (PHC skin) and 29.43% (PHC galls), respectively. The ASC skin and PHC gall extracts exhibited 94.40% and 81.54% in ferric-reducing antioxidant power, and 43.63 and 38.08 μg ascorbic acid equivalents per milli liter for total antioxidant capacity, respectively. The collagen extracts showed %RSA and chelation of pro-oxidant metal ions. Different mechanism of antioxidant action was identified for the extracts: radical scavengers for HC and metal ion chelators for NHC. In conclusion, red tilapia skin collagen is recommended as an active ingredient of nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, or functional foods, for the identified bioactive properties.
