Behavioural consequences of divergent selection on general locomotor activity in chickens

General locomotor activity is a highly variable phenotypic trait of animals. In domestic chickens it is different within and between breeds. The general locomotor activity is a substantially heritable trait and has been shown to be correlated with several other behavioural traits, such as for example feather pecking and anxiety in chickens. However, whether there is a relation between different levels of general locomotor activity and behavioural changes remained unclear. Therefore, a selection line model system has been established, where hens from the same founder population were selected over eight generations for either high or low general locomotor activity. The selection led to significant increases, respectively decreases in general locomotor activity and differences in growth. We here tested 128 hens of the 8^th generation in three behavioural tests. We assumed fearfulness to be affected from selection on general locomotor activity, which we tested in a tonic immobility test. Socio-positive and socio-negative behaviours were tested in respective test paradigms. Fearfulness was higher in hens selected for high general locomotor activity. Social behavioural traits and feather pecking were not affected by selection for general locomotor activity. Evolutionary mechanisms that link fear and general locomotor activity are discussed and also why social behaviours and feather pecking seems not to be affected from selection on general locomotor activity. Our results provide interesting new insights on how selection on one trait, general locomotor activity, affects the behavioural phenotype in other dimensions too.

Divergent selection on home pen locomotor activity in a chicken model: Selection program, genetic parameters and direct response on activity and body weight

General locomotor activity (GLA) in poultry has attracted attention, as it negatively influences production costs (energy expenditure and feed consumption) and welfare parameters (bone strength, litter quality, feather pecking and cannibalism). Laying hen lines diverging in the average level of spontaneous locomotor activity in the home pen were developed by genetic selection using the founder New Hampshire line. Activity was recorded using RFID technology at around five weeks of age during four to five days in the home pen. After initial phenotyping, the least active birds were selected for the low activity line and the most active for the high activity line, with no gene transfer between lines. In each of six generations, approximately ten sires were mated to twenty dams producing 158 to 334 offspring per line per generation. The response to selection was rapid and of a considerable magnitude. In sixth generation, the level of GLA was approximately halved in the low and doubled in the high line compared to the control (7.2, 14.9 and 28.7 recordings/h). Estimated heritability of locomotor activity in the low and high line was 0.38 and 0.33, respectively. Males, in general, were more active than females. High line birds were significantly heavier than low line birds. In fourth, fifth, and sixth generation, low as well as high line birds were lighter than control line birds. This selection experiment demonstrates variation in heritability for GLA and, as a result, genetically diverged lines have been developed. These lines can be used as models for further studies of underlying physiological, neural and molecular genetic mechanisms of spontaneous locomotor activity.

Divergent Selection on Feather Pecking Behavior in Laying Hens Has Caused Differences Between Lines in Egg Production, Egg Quality, and Feed Efficiency

The correlated changes in egg production, egg quality, and feed efficiency (FE) due to selection for feather pecking (FP) were investigated by analyzing the data from an experiment including 2 divergently selected lines and a control line. The experiment was conducted with hens from 42 to 46 wk (hatch 1) and 39 to 43 wk (hatch 2) of age in the fifth generation of selection. The number of FP bouts per hour in the low FP line (LFP) was lower than the high FP line (HFP; 0.38 vs. 2.01), and total plumage score in line LFP was better than in line HFP (16.9 vs. 11.6). During the 4 wk, egg number and egg mass in line LFP were higher than those in HFP (24.4 vs. 18.3 and 1,223 vs. 1,132 g, respectively). On the other hand, line HFP had greater egg weight (60.7 vs. 59.2 g), albumen height (73.0 vs. 64.9 in Haugh units), shell thickness (38.1 vs. 37.0 mm), and yolk percentage (30.6 vs. 29.5%) than the LFP line. The control line was intermediate for those traits. The residual feed consumption (RFC) was highest in line HFP, lowest in line LFP, and intermediate in line C. Partial regressions of feed consumption (FC) on BW gain and egg mass were not significantly different among the 3 lines, whereas a significant difference in regression on metabolic BW (32.6 g/d in line LFP, 38.0 g/d in control line, and 43.4 g/d in line HFP) was observed. In addition, there was a negative regression of FC per day on plumage score (-1.73 g). The adjustment for plumage score accounted for 60% of the difference between regressions on metabolic BW in lines LFP and HFP. These results indicated that selection for FP has led to a change in egg production, egg quality, and FE. The better FE in line LFP resulted from a lower requirement for maintenance energy. The later was partly accounted for by a better plumage cover.

Effects of ambient temperature and restricted feeding on the growth of feathers in growing turkeys

1. Male turkeys were reared to 6 weeks of age at 15 degrees C and 26 degrees C and fed ad libitum or restricted to 0.5 of the body weight of birds fed ad libitum. Basal metabolic rate was determined by indirect calorimetry at an ambient temperature of 20 degrees C. 2. Turkeys at 15 degrees C were lighter than those kept at 26 degrees C. Feather lengths and weight were similar in both groups. Fasting heat production corrected for both metabolic body size and activity was greater in turkeys reared at 15 degrees C than those at 26 degrees C. 3. Cranial breast feathers were significantly longer in restricted birds than in those fed ad libitum in contrast to a proportional decrease in the lengths of other feathers of 0.1 to 0.3. Feather weight as a proportion of body weight was 0.072 in restricted turkeys compared with 0.046 in birds fed ad libitum. There was no difference in basal metabolic rate between ad libitum and restricted turkeys. 4. It was concluded that feather growth was maintained in preference to body and muscle growth and that rearing birds at 15 degrees C did not improve breast feather cover. It is suggested that the growth of breast feathers in turkeys fed ad libitum is impaired.

Effect of plumage renewal after induced moulting on subsequent laying efficiency and persistence

1. Brown egg layers and dwarf broiler breeder females were force-moulted by different diets. The relationship between the extent of feather replacement and subsequent laying performance was studied. Some brown hens were subjected to metabolic experiments in order to compare post-moult heat production in relation to moulting success. 2. The extent of moulting had a clear effect on the post-moult heat production, and the differences were still present after 6 months in the second year of laying. 3. The extent of feather renewal during moulting showed high and very significant rank correlations with efficiency of food utilisation during the subsequent laying cycle. These correlations were generally higher than those of other features of the moulting procedure (body-weight-loss, minimum weight, duration of pause in laying). 4. The long-term energetic implications of the extent of moulting play an important role in subsequent performances and the persistence of lay during the following year is related to the extent of feather replacement.

A new approach to recording plumage deterioration

1. Recording methods for the scoring of plumage wear are reviewed. 2. A new technique, distinguishing between feather tracts, the surface to which damage occurs and the degree of degradation to the feathers themselves is elaborated: a 5 step scale for degradation is applied to all appropriate fractions of 6 feather regions. After correcting for the normal feather weight in the respective areas, all 6 area values are summed to constitute an overall index of body plumage wear (IBPW).
