Lysine Depletion during Different Feeding Phases: Effects on Growth Performances and Meat Quality of Broiler Chickens

In the past, many studies have been carried out to investigate the effect of lysine supplementation on broilers’ growth performances and feed efficiency. However, the knowledge concerning the reduction of the dietary content of this essential amino acid is limited and mainly restricted to the production performances of the birds. Within this context, the present study aimed at assessing the impact of lysine restriction during grower I (10–20 d) and grower I and II (10–20 and 21–34 d) feeding phases on live performances, breast meat quality traits and technological properties, as well as on the incidence and severity of abnormalities affecting the pectoral muscles (i.e., white striping, wooden breast and spaghetti meat). Lysine restriction during different feeding phases exerts negligible effects on the production performances of the broilers due to their compensatory growth. In addition, the increased anserine content following lysine depletion might have exerted a protective role against protein denaturation by buffering the acidic end-products generated during post-mortem rigor development.

Abstract

The present study aimed at assessing the impact of lysine restriction performed during different feeding phases on growth performances, meat quality traits and technological properties as well as on the incidence and severity of breast muscle abnormalities. For this purpose, a total of 945 one-day-old Ross 308 male chicks was randomly divided into three experimental groups: CONT, fed a four feeding phases commercial diet, GRW I, and GRW I + II fed CONT diet with the depletion of synthetic lysine during grower I and grower I and II feeding phases, respectively. Productive performances were recorded throughout the whole rearing cycle and the incidence of breast muscle growth-related abnormalities assessed at slaughter (49 d) on 280 breasts/group. Quality traits and technological properties of breast meat were measured on a total of 54 Pectoralis major muscles. Lysine restriction only marginally affected the productive performances and the quality parameters of breast meat. The increased (p < 0.05) solubility of the protein fraction along with the remarkably higher (p < 0.05) anserine content found in GRW I + II suggests an increased energy requirement in the pectoral muscles belonging to lysine-restricted birds and supports the hypothesis of a reduced protein synthesis taking place within these muscles.

Effects of reduced digestible lysine density on myopathies of the Pectoralis major muscles in broiler chickens at 48 and 62 days of age

Quantitative control of nutrient intake may decrease the incidence of wooden breast (WB) and white striping (WS) myopathies with some impairment of live performance. Two experiments (Exp) utilizing Yield Plus × Ross 708 male broilers were conducted to determine if a reduction in myopathies may be obtained through a qualitative approach by reducing digestible lysine (dLys) density. All birds received an identical starter diet until 11 d of age. In Exp 1 (63 pens; 22 birds/pen), each pen was then randomly assigned to 1 of the following 7 dietary treatments (TRT) for a 47 d production period. Seven dietary treatments were provided for the grower 1 (G1; 12 to 18 d of age) and grower 2 (G2; 19 to 26 d of age) phases: 1) 100% of primary breeder recommendations for dLys throughout Exp; 2) 85% of TRT 1 dLys for G1; 3) 85% of TRT 1 dLys for G2; 4) 85% of TRT 1 dLys for G1 and G2; 5) 75% of TRT 1 dLys for G1; 6) 75% of TRT 1 dLys for G2; 7) 75% of TRT 1 for G1 and G2. In Exp 2 (24 pens; 30 birds/pen), birds were randomly assigned to 1 of the following 4 dietary TRT (Table 2) during a 61 d production period. Four dietary treatments were provided for the grower (G; 12 to 28 d) and finisher 1 (F1; 29 to 40 d of age) phases: 1) 100% of primary breeder recommendations for dLys 2) 85% of TRT 1 dLys for G; 3) 85% of TRT 1 dLys for F1; 4) 85% of TRT 1 dLys for G and F1; thereafter, birds received common finisher 1 (Exp 1: 27 to 42 d of age), finisher 2 (Exp 2: 41 to 48 d of age) and withdrawal (Exp 1: 43 to 47 d of age; Exp 2: 49 to 61 d of age) diets. Ideal amino acid ratios were not maintained in reduced dLys diets in either Exp. At 48 (Exp 1; 18 birds/pen) and 62 (Exp 2; 30 birds/pen) d of age, selected birds were processed and fillets were visually scored for WB and WS. No differences (P > 0.05) in cumulative live performance responses between TRT 1 and the remaining TRT were observed in either Exp. In Exp 1, the incidence of severe WB (20.8%) and WS (42.3%) at 48 d of age among birds receiving TRT 7 was reduced (P < 0.01) compared with TRT 1 (WB: 36.6%; WS: 64.3%), at the expense of reduced (P = 0.003) breast weights and yield. In Exp 2, the incidence of severe WB (18.8%) and WS (17.8%) at 62 d of age for birds receiving TRT 4 was reduced (P < 0.05) compared with TRT 1 (WB: 39.3%; WS: 38.3%), without any detrimental effects on processing characteristics. These results indicate that altering dietary dLys during critical periods of the growth trajectory may be a viable strategy for reducing the incidence and severity of WB and WS.

Effect of production phase on growth, enzyme activities and feed selection of broilers raised on vegetable protein diet

This study consisted of two experiments, conducted to assess the impact of phase at which vegetable protein (VP) diets are introduced to broiler chicks, and preference of birds for diets based on soybean or canola meal (CM). Two hundred and ten day-old Cobb 500 chicks were randomly distributed into five dietary groups in the main experiment. One group was fed on animal protein (AP) diet all through to 21 days of age; two other groups were started on AP diet for 7 days and then switched to diets containing soybean meal (AP-SBM) or AP-CM, while two other diets (SBM-AP and CM-AP) were started on one of the VP diets for 7 days and then switched to AP diet. A sub-experiment on thirty birds raised on a commercial diet to 7 days was used in a feed selection test to quantify the preference of birds for the diets containing mainly CM or SBM. Chicks were reared under similar care and management conditions and the diets were iso-caloric and iso-nitrogenous. Results of the main experiment showed that chicks on CM-AP diet ate more (p<0.05) than those on the other diets up to day 7. Body weight gain was highest (p<0.001) on the AP-SBM diet while birds on the CM-AP diet weighed the least at 7 d. Feed intake, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, mortality, bone growth, visceral organ development, and activities of digestive enzymes were similar between the groups from hatch to 21 days of age. Results of the second sub-experiment showed that chicks preferred the CM-based diets to the SBM-based diets at 8 to 14 d (p<0.001) and 15 to 21 d (p<0.01) when given a choice. Overall, the birds were not affected by the nature of the starter diet although they tended to prefer the canola to soybean diets.

Evidence of a dietary selection for methionine by the piglet

The objective of the current study was to investigate if there is a preference of piglets for diets varying in Met content and whether these preferences change with time. For this purpose, a feeding trial was carried out over a period of 6 wk. Piglets (equal numbers of males and females) with an initial BW of 7.2 +/- 0.1 kg were randomly subdivided into 4 groups of 12 pigs each. Two reference groups were fed either 0.19% Met (low-Met group) or 0.26% Met (high-Met group) diets. Two other groups had the choice between 2 diets containing 0.19 or 0.23% Met (Met-choice 1 group), or 0.19 or 0.26% Met (Met-choice 2 group). Compared with the low-Met group (397 g), daily feed intake was increased by 43%, 60%, and 82% (P < 0.05) in the Met-choice 1, Met-choice 2, and the high-Met group, respectively. Piglets on the Met-choice 1 and Met-choice 2 groups, respectively, selected 72 and 80% of the higher Met diet. In the first week, piglets on both Met-choice groups selected the diets at random, but they increased their preference for the diets higher in Met up to 81 and 89%, respectively, in the last experimental week. For the total experiment, mean Met contents of total diets were 0.22 and 0.25% in the Met-choice 1 and Met-choice 2 groups, respectively. Average daily gain of 195 g in the low-Met group was more than doubled (P < 0.05) in the high-Met group. Daily gains of 306 and 366 g in the Met-choice 1 and 2 groups, respectively, were (P < 0.05) improved compared with the low-Met group but lower (P < 0.05) than in the high-Met group. Plasma Met concentration of 46.3 micromol/mL in the Met-choice 2 group was greater than in the low-Met or the Met-choice 1 groups (25.3 and 32.8 micromol/mL, respectively) but lower (P < 0.05) compared with the high-Met group (59.6 micromol/mL). Conversely, the sum of essential AA showed a greater (P < 0.05) concentration in plasma from pigs on the low-Met and Met-choice 1 groups than in plasma from pigs on Met-choice 2 group and the high-Met group. In conclusion, the present data demonstrate that piglets are able to discriminate among diets of varying Met content. When given a choice, they prefer a diet better balanced for Met to a Met-deficient diet. As a result of the altered feeding pattern, piglets are able to partly redress the depressed performance and altered plasma AA pattern resulting from the ingestion of the diet more limiting in Met concentration.

Broiler Short-Term Feed Preferences Measured with SRAbox, a New Feed Choice Procedure

Three dietary compositions and 3 methods of pellet preparation were used in different choice situations to improve our understanding of the factors perceived by broiler chickens in the physical structure of their diet. Within the same visual field, broiler chickens were offered 8 microfeeders containing different pelleted feeds that could be reached from the same position of the bird. Chickens were daily tested during 5-min tests following a 45-min period of feed withdrawal, after adaptation to individual cages and experimental feeders. Two feeds (4 microfeeders/feed in alternate positions) were weighed prior to and after the test. Behavior of the chickens was videotaped during the test to count the number of pecks given to each microfeeder. In a first experiment, 2 feeds of distinct composition were either steam or cold-pelleted. The tests of choice were repeated daily from 22 to 25 and from 35 to 38 d of age on 96 male broiler chickens. Significant preferences were measured from the first test. Similar preferences were measured when chickens received the same choice or alternating choices from one test to another. Differences of feed intake between 2 feeds during 5 min were significantly correlated to differences of number of pecks (R2 = 0.85). In most cases, preferences were established within the first minute of pecking. Steam pellets were significantly preferred to cold pellets for one feed composition but not for the other. Preferences for compositions were consistent whatever the pellet preparation and probably associated with the color of the feeds. A second experiment confirmed that 38-d-old broiler chickens seemed to prefer light colors. Short-term preferences of a chicken for a feed were rather influenced by physical characteristics of feed particles (size, color, hardness) than by the origin of raw materials. Feed pecking may change because of feed composition itself, because of its consequences on color or texture cues, or both.

Sequential Feeding Programs for Broiler Chickens: Twenty-Four- and Forty-Eight-Hour Cycles

Sequential feeding programs (Seq) of 2 feeds, 1 protein rich-energy poor and 1 energy rich-protein poor, during the same day or every other day were compared with a control complete diet for male broiler growth and body composition from 15 d to market weight. In experiment 1, BW gain and breast meat yield were significantly lower than those of controls for 24-h-cycle Seq with extreme protein content difference between the 2 feeds. BW gain and breast meat yield were higher than those of controls when feeds with moderate differences [feed moderately rich in protein (PM) = 26% CP; feed moderately rich in energy (EM) = 16% CP] were fed. Feeding periods that were half as long but changed twice as frequently gave less favorable results. In experiment 2, effects of allowing access to feed for different lengths of time were measured. The treatments in a 24-h cycle were a constant control diet, 50% PM-50% EM, 40% PM-60% EM, or 80% PM-20% EM decreasing to 40% PM-60% EM. Chickens fed 40% PM-60% EM had a 6% lower BW gain and a 3% higher feed/gain ratio and were fatter than those from other treatments. In experiment 3, male chickens fed a 48-h-cycle Seq of EM and PM every other day had the same BW gain, feed intake, and feed/gain ratio as controls. In experiment 4, five 48-h-cycle Seq with varying differences of energy and protein contents between EM and PM gave similar or slight reduction of performances compared with controls. A field trial with 8 flocks of broilers confirmed that feeding high and low protein feeds on alternate days resulted in performance similar to that from feeding a complete feed despite large day-to-day variations in lysine intake. Converse to shorter phases, Seq for 48-h cycles offers new opportunities for practical application and also for studies of short-term regulation of protein and lipid metabolism in chickens.

Components of feed efficiency in broiler breeding stock: is improved feed conversion associated with increased docility and lethargy in broilers?

Two trials were conducted to test the hypothesis that broilers classified as good rather than poor feed converters (low vs. high feed-to-gain ratios, respectively) would show decreased activity (increased lethargy) and reduced fear of human caretakers. In both trials birds were reared to juvenile selection age when the 192 males with the "best" breast and leg conformation were placed into individual bird cages (46 x 60 cm), and their feed conversion ratio (FCR) was measured. In trial 1, birds remained in the cages for 7 d for assessment of feed conversion. During the feed conversion testing period, the birds were subjected to three behavioral tests. First, approach-avoidance responses to a novel object placed in the feeder were observed when feeding would be expected. Second, behavior patterns of individual birds were assessed by recording feeding, drinking, walking pecking, preening, standing, and resting. Third, the 20 birds showing the best FCR and the 20 showing the worst were induced into tonic immobility (TI). Feed conversion was not related to either the novel object or the TI measures of fearfulness. Neither was FCR related to feeding, drinking, walking, or pecking. However, FCR was positively correlated with both standing and preening and negatively correlated with resting behavior. In trial 2, the FCR test lasted for 11 d. The birds were assessed for behavioral patterns (feeding, drinking, walking, pecking, preening, standing, and resting) as in the previous trial. As in trial 1, FCR was positively correlated with standing and negatively correlated with resting behavior. Contrary to expectations, the results of these two studies suggest that broilers with good FCR were actually less lethargic and no more fearful than those that showed poor FCR values.

Responses of meat-type chickens to choice feeding of diets differing in protein and energy from hatch to market weight

Chickens from three genetic stocks known to differ in growth potential consumed ad libitum either a single (control) diet or a choice of two diets that differed in protein and energy. Formulation of the choice diets was such that when mixed in specific proportions they provided single diets that decreased in protein and increased in energy over the experimental period. When comparisons of feeding regimens were made at a common age, body weights and feed efficiencies for all stocks were enhanced in chicks fed a single diet. When comparisons were made at a common body weight for controls, chickens fed the single diet were about 15% heavier than those given a dietary choice. For feed efficiency, however, the pattern remained for the faster growing stock whereas there was no difference between feeding regimens for the slower growing stock. Chicks provided a choice of diets had heavier abdominal fat pads and lighter breasts relative to body weight than those fed a single diet. With choice feeding, there were stock by diet interactions for dietary preferences through the first 9 d after hatch. Early on, the interactions resulted from the faster growing stocks exhibiting a greater preference for the diet higher in protein and lower in energy than the slower growing stock. By Day 5, however, the interaction occurred because stocks exhibited either no dietary preference or preferred the diet that was lower in protein and higher in energy. Regardless of genetic stock, at 9 d of age and thereafter there was a clear preference for the diet lower in protein and higher in energy than the diet higher in protein and lower in energy. These data for feed intake were consistent with behavioral observations that showed a preponderance of chicks eating from the feeder containing the diet lower in protein and higher in energy. Compared to a single diet, under choice feeding, energy utilization was negatively influenced more in the faster than slower growing stocks. Protein and sulfur amino acid utilization was not affected by feeding regimen in faster growing stocks, but was enhanced under choice feeding in the slower growing stock. Although lysine utilization was enhanced by choice feeding in all stocks, the effect was greater in the slower than in the faster growing ones. These data demonstrate that although broiler diets are formulated to enhance growth and overall feed efficiency, chicks that are provided a dietary choice of protein and energy do not eat to maximize growth or feed efficiency.

Effect of altering the early dietary protein level on males from two strains of commercial turkeys

Two trials were conducted in which male turkeys from commercial Strains A and B were fed diets calculated to contain 80, 100, or 120% of recommended levels of protein from 1 to 8 wk of age and recommended levels of protein at other ages. Feeding reduced protein diets decreased 8-wk BW of both strains. No difference in BW, however, was evident at 17 wk in either strain. Dietary protein level generally did not influence overall feed to gain ratios, feed intake, or behaviors of male turkeys from these two strains. Effects of dietary protein level on walking ability were inconclusive. The results of the present study indicate that it may be possible to reduce early dietary protein levels with savings in feed cost for male turkeys with no adverse effects on growth or feed conversion at market age.

Self-selection among diets differing in methionine content by chickens of different lines

Two trials were conducted to compare the ability of chickens from different genetic lines to select among diets differing in methionine. In Trial 1, chicks from White Plymouth Rock (HW) and White Leghorn (HA) lines were offered a choice of diets containing .85, .58, or .44% methionine from 1 through 7 days of age. In Trial 2, a slow-growing line of White Plymouth Rocks (LW) was used in addition to the same lines used in Trial 1. A choice of the three diets was offered from 1 through 13 and from 20 through 23 days of age. During the period from 14 through 19 days of age, all chicks were fed the .44% methionine diet. In both trials, Line HW chicks first exhibited a dietary preference at 5 days of age. Line HA chicks did not discriminate among diets in either trial when given a choice from 1 day posthatch. They did, however, exhibit a preference starting on Day 20 in Trial 2 (after being fed the deficient diet). No dietary preferences were exhibited by chicks from Line LW. Results of these trials showed that selection among diets varying in methionine content was influenced by genotype, age, nutritional state of the chick, and their interactions.

Food intake adjustments of chicks: short term reactions to deficiencies in lysine, methionine and tryptophan

1. Two experiments were conducted to compare food intake responses of broiler chicks fed diets varying in lysine, methionine, and tryptophan. Diet D was formulated to create simultaneous deficiencies of lysine, methionine, and tryptophan. Diet A matched National Research Council (1984) recommendations for broilers, and diets B and C were, respectively, 2:1 and 1:2 mixes of diets A and D. 2. Short-term food intake can provide information on the sequences of adaptation of chicks to a diet deficient in essential amino acids. 3. Chicks consumed 26% less of diet D than A during the first 24 h posthatch. When chicks fed diet A or D to 7 d of age were then fed one of 4 diets singly, within 24 h intake was lowest for chicks fed diet D. Within 48 h, food intake of diet C was more than that of diet D and less than that of diet A, while for diet B intake was more than of diet D but not different from diet A. 4. In the second experiment, chicks were fed diet A to 8 d and then diets A or D alone or given a choice of diets A and D from 8 to 20 d of age. Within 4 to 8 h, food intake of chicks fed diet D alone decreased markedly followed by partial recovery within 24 h. In a choice setting, consistent preference of Diet A over Diet D was observed within 7 h followed by stabilisation at about 65% diet A to 35% diet D. 5. Chicks fed diet D alone from 8 to 20 d of age, then placed in the same choice situation preferred diet A to D with a delay of less than one h and stabilisation at about 85%. Chicks provided a choice of diets A and D from 8 to 20 d, and then diet D alone reduced their food intake more quickly than those not given a choice initially. 6. Broiler chicks appear to react to amino acid deficiencies within a short period (hours) by adjusting their feed intake and/or selection. The response is influenced by age and prior experience.
