Response of broilers susceptible to ascites when grown in high and low oxygen environments

Oral supplementation with vitamin C improves intestinal mucosa morphology in the pulmonary hypertensive broiler chicken

1. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of added dietary vitamin C on the intestinal mucosa morphology in pulmonary hypertensive broiler chickens. 2. One-day-old chickens were reared at high altitude and treated with 400, 800 or 1200 mg vitamin C/l of drinking water for 48 d. Segments from the duodenum, jejunum and ileum were collected for morphometric analysis. 3. The duodenum and jejunum villus height, width, surface area and lamina propria thickness were greater in the highest vitamin C-treated groups compared to controls. 4. There were significant variations only in villus types of the jejunum and ileum: increased proportions of leaf + tongue-like villi and decreased proportions of convoluted + ridge-like villi at day 36 at the groups with 400 and 800 mg vitamin C/l. 5. It was concluded that vitamin C improves the gut morphology of the pulmonary hypertensive broiler chickens.

Rupture of the right auricle in broiler chickens

This report describes a case of cardiac right auricle rupture (RAR) in a flock of 11,500 broilers that were 14 days old. The birds were housed at an altitude of 300 m, with an external temperature of -10 degrees C and an internal temperature of 15 degrees C. There was 3.6% mortality, due to sudden deaths, from 10 to 14 days of age. All necropsied birds had haemopericardium due to RAR at the point of the junction with the vena cava, and 85% of them had blood in the oral cavity and external acoustic meatus. The vena cava and its caudal branches, the intestinal vessels, and the sinus durae matris and sinus saggitalis were distended. Histological examination showed haemorrhages into the myocardium, degeneration of the cardiac muscle fibres, as well as oedema of the lungs and hypertrophy of the smooth muscle bundles of the parabronchial walls. Blood in the mouth of the broilers may have been due to haemoptysis, which in humans is caused mainly by mitral stenosis. In broilers, mitral stenosis and/or insufficiency, and left ventricular failure with consequent pulmonary hypertension (PH) were considered as possible triggers for right ventricular failure. The alarm reaction in hypoxaemia, due to secondary factors such as cold, caused tachycardia and tachypnoea, may have induced further elevation of PH, and acute myocardial infarction causing cardiac rupture and haemopericardium in this case. Hypertension and PH, due to possible mitral stenosis/insufficiency in association with acute myocardial ischaemia, were probably the determinant factors causing this acute episode. This opens the possibility that the RAR may be cardiogenic.

Influence of the stocking density and rearing season on incidence of sudden death syndrome in broiler chickens

Influences of the stocking density and rearing season on the incidence of sudden death syndrome (SDS) were investigated in commercial broiler chickens, which were reared until 63 d after birth. The SDS mortality and total mortality were measured at three different stocking densities of 12, 15, and 18 birds/m2 in rearing seasons of summer, autumn, and winter. At stocking densities of 15 and 12 birds/m2, neither SDS mortality nor total mortality was significantly different throughout the rearing season. However, at 18 birds/m2, SDS mortality significantly increased in summer and winter. The increased SDS mortality was accompanied by a significant increase in total mortality in summer but not in winter. Irrespective of the stocking density, body weight gain and feed intake were lower in summer with no significant change in feed efficiency. The data suggest that stocking density can act as a factor affecting the incidence of SDS in summer and winter, independent of feed efficiency.
