Attentional Correlates of Colored Lights: Considerations for Cognitive Testing

Attention, an important index of cognitive function, can be affected amidst colored lights. This work investigated the effects of colored lights on the performance in attention task. Participants (N = 42) performed in one, two, and three letter cancellation task (LCT) during four lighting conditions. The order of LCT and the colored light sessions were randomized. The performance in LCT was evaluated through % accuracy, % omission, and % error. A repeated measures ANOVA showed a statistically significant difference in % accuracy in one LCT (F(2.46, 100.8) = 24.45, p < 0.001), two LCT (F(2.57, 105.4) = 20.53, p < 0.001), and three LCT (F(2.66, 109.22) = 17.96, p < 0.001) among the four colored lights. In addition, % omission revealed a statistically significant difference in one LCT (F(2.46, 100.8) = 24.43, p < 0.001), two LCT (F(2.57, 105.4) = 20.57, p < 0.001), and three LCT (F(2.66, 109.16) = 18.21, p < 0.001) among the four lights. There was no statistically significant difference in % error in one LCT (F(2.05, 84.1) = 1.23, p = 0.3), two LCT (F(2.66, 109.06) = 0.62, p = 0.971), three LCT (F(2.62, 107.53) = 0.97, p = 0.4) among the four lighting conditions. Colored lights affect attention-related cognitive processing. The attentional correlates of white and red lights are more compared to green, and blue lights. Lighting condition should be an important consideration for cognitive testing, for designing workspaces, educational settings, and other environments where attention plays a crucial role.

The cognitive impact of light: illuminating ipRGC circuit mechanisms

Ever-present in our environments, light entrains circadian rhythms over long timescales, influencing daily activity patterns, health and performance. Increasing evidence indicates that light also acts independently of the circadian system to directly impact physiology and behaviour, including cognition. Exposure to light stimulates brain areas involved in cognition and appears to improve a broad range of cognitive functions. However, the extent of these effects and their mechanisms are unknown. Intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) have emerged as the primary conduit through which light impacts non-image-forming behaviours and are a prime candidate for mediating the direct effects of light on cognition. Here, we review the current state of understanding of these effects in humans and mice, and the tools available to uncover circuit-level and photoreceptor-specific mechanisms. We also address current barriers to progress in this area. Current and future efforts to unravel the circuits through which light influences cognitive functions may inform the tailoring of lighting landscapes to optimize health and cognitive function.

Effect of correlated colour temperature and illuminance levels on user's visual perception under LED lighting in Taiwan

This study aimed to utilise the characteristics of light-emitting diode (LED) lighting, including the adjustable correlated colour temperature (CCT) and illuminance levels, to evaluate the effects of various CCT and illuminance level combinations on visual perception and their patterns under different lighting conditions. Five white light balances with different CCTs were created together with four levels of illuminance. Based on the patterns of visual perception, when the CCT increased with the illuminance levels, the participants' visual perception changed from dim, boring, and sleepy to intense, vivid, energetic, and bright. As the CCT decreased, the participants gradually perceived the lighting as warm and relaxing. As illuminance levels increased, dim and unpleasant feelings progressively changed to bright and pleasant ones. The study attempted to identify lighting combinations that can respond to different psychological needs and can be used as a guide in the future design of lighting equipment. Practitioner summary: Appropriate lighting conditions could aid individuals in increasing the quality of life. This study conducted an experiment to evaluate the effects of various correlated colour temperature and illuminance level combinations on visual perception by using LED lighting. The results showed the effect of the different lighting combinations on the visual perception of the participants. The influence of cultural dimensions when implementing fun in the workplace approach as a driver of creativity

Creativity is essential for success in business, especially in the contemporary world where innovations are a cornerstone of competitive advantage. A large body of literature has examined many factors which influence creative abilities with the work environment being the factor of increasing importance. Creativity has been associated with the work environment through a number of theoretical frameworks and empirical studies. However, the relationship between the work environment and creativity in different cultures has not been explored sufficiently. This paper addresses this gap in the literature by linking the concept of a creativity-supporting work environment and culture. To that end, elements of the work environment (physical, socio-organisational, and fun in the workplace) and creative personality have been analysed on multinational samples. The results clearly point that the relationship exists between dimensions of the national culture (individualism, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity, and power distance) and specific elements of a creativity-supporting work environment. Practitioner summary: Companies experience high pressure for generating creative ideas. As a result, stimulating employees' creativity has become a key strategic aim. This study, through cross-cultural primary research, provides clear managerial implications and practical advice for successful implementation and quality adoption of the creativity-supporting work environment worldwide. Light as a positive situational cue at work: Satisfaction with light relates to judgements of other's warmth and competence

Workplace illumination is known to impact mood, performance and decision-making. Based on the idea that positive feelings associated with light might influence social judgements in workplaces, we propose that satisfaction with light as a specific affective response to light would lead to positive judgements of other individuals. In a laboratory experiment (N = 164), participants assessed their satisfaction with light and rated other person's faces on warmth and competence. Results showed that satisfaction with light positively influenced judgement of others. We replicated the positive relation between satisfaction with light and social judgements in a field study with employees (N = 176). These findings highlight the importance of satisfaction with light for social judgement in workplaces. We discuss theoretical contributions and practical implications concerning the design of settings involving the evaluation of other individuals. Practitioner Summary: The design of work settings where the evaluation of others takes place is an important topic. A laboratory experiment and a field study demonstrate that satisfaction with workplace illumination influences judgements of others. The results provide interesting possibilities for the design of work settings that involve the evaluation of others.
