Modelling of thermochemical energy recovery processes for switchgrass (Panicum virgatum)

Sugarcane bagasse: a biomass sufficiently applied for improving global energy, environment and economic sustainability

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) bagasse (SCB) is a biomass of agricultural waste obtained from sugarcane processing that has been found in abundance globally. Due to its abundance in nature, researchers have been harnessing this biomass for numerous applications such as in energy and environmental sustainability. However, before it could be optimally utilised, it has to be pre-treated using available methods. Different pre-treatment methods were reviewed for SCB, both alkaline and alkali-acid process reveal efficient and successful approaches for obtaining higher glucose production from hydrolysis. Procedures for hydrolysis were evaluated, and results indicate that pre-treated SCB was susceptible to acid and enzymatic hydrolysis as > 80% glucose yield was obtained in both cases. The SCB could achieve a bio-ethanol (a biofuel) yield of > 0.2 g/g at optimal conditions and xylitol (a bio-product) yield at > 0.4 g/g in most cases. Thermochemical processing of SCB also gave excellent biofuel yields. The plethora of products obtained in this regard have been catalogued and elucidated extensively. As found in this study, the SCB could be used in diverse applications such as adsorbent, ion exchange resin, briquettes, ceramics, concrete, cement and polymer composites. Consequently, the SCB is a biomass with great potential to meet global energy demand and encourage environmental sustainability.

Bioh2, Heat and Power from Palm Empty Fruit Bunch via Pyrolysis-Autothermal Reforming: Plant Simulation, Experiments, and CO2 Mitigation

Empty fruit bunch, a significant by-product of the palm oil industry, represents a tremendous and hitherto neglected renewable energy resource for many countries in South East Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. The design and simulation of a plant producing pure hydrogen through autothermal reforming (ATR) of palm empty fruit bunch (PEFB) was carried out based on successful laboratory experiments of the core process. The bio-oil feed to the ATR stage was represented in the experiments and in the simulation by a surrogate bio-oil mixture of 11 organic compounds shown to be main constituents of PEFB oil from previous work, and whose combined elemental composition and volatility was determined to be as close as possible to that of the real PEFB bio-oil. The experiments confirmed that H2 yields close to equilibrium predictions were achievable using an in-house synthetised Rh-Al2O3 catalyst in a packed bed reactor. Initial sensitivity analysis on the plant revealed that feed molar steam to carbon ratio should not exceed 3 for the optimal design of the ATR hydrogen production plant. An overall plant efficiency of 39.4% was obtained for the initial design, this value was improved to 67.5% by applying pinch analysis to enhance the integration of heat in the design. The proposed design renders CO2 savings of about 0.56 kg per kg of raw PEFB processed. The proposed design and accompanying experimental studies together make a strong case on the possibility of polygeneration of H2, heat, and power from an otherwise discarded agricultural waste.

Pyrolysis of corn cob: physico-chemical characterization, thermal decomposition behavior and kinetic analysis

Bioenergy out of lignocellulosic biomass, especially from agricultural crop residues, is making massive inroads in our quest for sustainable environment. In the present study, detailed physico-chemical characterization, thermal degradation characteristics, and kinetics of pyrolysis of corn cob are reported. Thermogravimetric experiments were performed at different heating rates, such as, 10, 20, and 30 °C/min in an inert atmosphere. Thermogravimetric (TG) and derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) curves inferred the thermal behavior characteristics of corn cob. Significant content of cellulose and hemicellulose put together (76.23%) suggested tremendous potential of corn cob to give enhanced yield of bio-oil through pyrolysis. Maximum mass loss of 61.92% for corn cob was observed in the temperature range of 180–360 °C. The kinetic parameters for pyrolysis of corn cob were determined by employing model-free isoconversional methods like, Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa, and Starink. Activation energy from FWO (62.44 kJ/mol) and Starink (61.74 kJ/mol) method for pyrolysis of corn cob was found to be in close proximity. The results revealed prospective bioenergy potential of corn cob as a feedstock for pyrolysis process.
