Sleep environments and sleep physiology: A review

Sleep loss impairs task performance and post-physical activity recovery, cognitive performance and mood, heightens fatigue and decreases vigour; poor sleep quality impairs decision-making, the speed and accuracy of task performance, and post-exercise recovery. Sleep time and quality are affected by age, psychological and physiological conditions, culture and environmental factors. Skin temperature, rapid temperature change and sweating during sleep can significantly reduce sleep quality. Hence, the thermal properties of bedding and sleepwear, both in steady-state and transient ambient temperature conditions, are logically important factors. Research to date on sleeping thermal microclimates and their effect on sleep quality is scarce. This present review covers the fundamental elements of human sleep, highlighting physically active people, such as athletes, and the influence of sleepwear and bedding on sleep thermal microclimates, as well as the research methods that have been and could be used in this field. This review identifies opportunity for future research direction and approaches to understanding thermal environments that may support better human sleep.

Gender-dependent association between sleep duration and overweight incidence in CHINESE school children: a national follow-up study

BACKGROUND

The relationship between sleep duration and overweight risk remains unexplored among Chinese children. This study aims to evaluate this association in a national investigation with school-aged population.

METHODS

There were 18,302 normal weight children in this Chinese national study which conducted during 2013-2014 included in the research. Anthropometric measurements were performed both at baseline and after 6-9 month. Sleep duration, physical activity, food intake and social economic information were collected by self-report questionnaire. Overweight was defined according to the updated Chinese criterion. Cox regression was used to evaluate the relationships between sleep duration and overweight incidence with multivariable adjusted.

RESULTS

In total, there were 443 new overweight cases recorded at the end of observation. Overweight incidence with greater than 9 h (long sleep duration, LSD), 7 to 9 h (middle sleep duration, MSD), and less than 7 h of sleep (short sleep duration, SSD) were 2.7, 3.1 and 3.3% respectively. Stratified by gender and compared with LSD, the hazard ratio (HR) of overweight for females with MSD was 1.60 (95% CI: 1.02-2.52). Stratified by age and gender, the HR in the group of MSD was 2.13 (1.20-3.77) in female aged 6-10 years and 0.24 (0.06-0.93) in female aged 15-17 years.

CONCLUSION

The association between short sleep duration and overweight is age- and gender dependent. In group of small age and elder age, girls' adiposity states are independently associated with sleep duration. Sleep recommendation is a potential preventive action for overweight/obesity among girls.

Improvement Characteristics of Bio-active Materials Coated Fabric on Rat Muscular Mitochondria

This study surveys the improvement characteristics in old-aged muscular mitochondria by bio-active materials coated fabric (BMCF). To observe the effects, the fabric (10 and 30%) was worn to old-aged rat then the oxygen consumption efficiency and copy numbers of mitochondria, and mRNA expression of apoptosis- and mitophagy-related genes were verified. By wearing the BMCF, the oxidative respiration significantly increased when using the 30% materials coated fabric. The mitochondrial DNA copy number significantly decreased and subsequently recovered in a dose-dependent manner. The respiratory control ratio to mitochondrial DNA copy number showed a dose-dependent increment. As times passed, Bax, caspase 9, PGC-1α and β-actin increased, and Bcl-2 decreased in a dose-dependent manner. However, the BMCF can be seen to have had no effect on Fas receptor. PINK1 expression did not change considerably and was inclined to decrease in control group, but the expression was down-regulated then subsequently increased with the use of the BMCF in a dose-dependent manner. Caspase 3 increased and subsequently decreased in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that the BMCF invigorates mitophagy and improves mitochondrial oxidative respiration in skeletal muscle, and in early stage of apoptosis induced by the BMCF is not related to extrinsic death-receptor mediated but mitochondria-mediated signaling pathway.

EFFECTS OF MULTIFUNCTIONAL FABRICS ON CARDIAC AUTONOMIC TONE AND PSYCHOLOGICAL STATE

Heart rate variability was compared in 20 subjects wearing multifunctionalfabric (experimental sessions) and cotton (control sessions) clothing. Anxiety, depression, fatigue, and stress levels were lower and emotional levels were higher during the experimental sessions than in the control sessions. Multifunctional fabrics reduced the low-frequency/high-frequency power ratio of heart rate variability. These results support the hypothesis that multifunctional fabrics increase cardiac parasympathetic tone. In addition, subjects had lower heart rates during the experimental sessions compared with controls, suggesting a stabilizing effect on the autonomic nervous system. In conclusion, multifunctional fabrics may act to stabilize both the autonomic nervous system and psychological state.
