What matters in making demand-based decisions: Time alone or difficulty too?

Which task is easier, doing arithmetic problems of specified form for some specified duration, or carrying a bucket of specified weight over some specified distance? If it is possible to choose between the “more cognitive” task and the “more physical” task, how are the difficulty levels of the tasks compared? We conducted two experiments in which participants chose the easier of two tasks, one that involved solving addition or multiplication problems (Experiment 1) or addition problems with different numbers of addends (Experiment 2) for varying amounts of time (in both experiments), and one that involved carrying a bucket of different weights over a fixed distance (in both experiments). We found that the probability of choosing to do the bucket task was higher when the bucket was empty than when it was weighted, and increased when the cognitive task was harder and its duration grew. We could account for the choice probabilities by mapping the independent variables onto one abstract variable, Φ. The functional identity of Φ remains to be determined. It could be interpreted as an inferred effort variable, subjective duration, or an abstract, amodal common code for difficulty.

Task order choices in cognitive and perceptual-motor tasks: The cognitive-load-reduction (CLEAR) hypothesis

A core question in the study of the dynamics of cognition is how tasks are ordered. Given two tasks, neither of which is prerequisite for the other and neither of which brings a clearly greater reward, which task will be done first? Few studies have addressed this question, though recent work has suggested one possible answer, which we here call the cognitive-load-reduction (CLEAR) hypothesis. According to the CLEAR hypothesis, there is a strong drive to reduce cognitive load (to "clear one's mind"). Given two tasks, one of which is more cognitively demanding than the other, the more cognitively demanding task will tend to be done first. We tested this prediction using a novel method inviting participants to freely choose when to perform each of c = 5, 10, or 15 items per category in item-generation tasks relative to b = 10 box-moving tasks. The box-moving tasks were cognitively undemanding relative to the item generation tasks, whose cognitive difficulty presumably grew with c. A full half of our n = 122 participants chose to complete all of the c tasks before performing any of the b tasks, and most other participants chose to complete a majority of the c tasks before any of the b tasks. This result is consistent with the CLEAR hypothesis. Speed on the box-moving task decreased the later the category-generation task was completed, supporting another CLEAR prediction. The general method used here provides direction for future work on task order choices in cognitive and perceptual-motor tasks.

Covert Verb Reading Contributes to Signal Classification of Motor Imagery in BCI

Motor imagery is widely used in the brain-computer interface (BCI) systems that can help people actively control devices to directly communicate with the external world, but its training and performance effect is usually poor for normal people. To improve operators' BCI performances, here we proposed a novel paradigm, which combined the covert verb reading in the traditional motor imagery paradigm. In our proposed paradigm, participants were asked to covertly read the presented verbs during imagining right hand or foot movements referred by those verbs. EEG signals were recorded with both our proposed paradigm and the traditional paradigm. By the common spatial pattern method, we, respectively, decomposed these signals into spatial patterns and extracted their features used in the following classification of support vector machine. Compared with the traditional paradigm, our proposed paradigm could generate clearer spatial patterns following a somatotopic distribution, which led to more distinguishable features and higher classification accuracies than those in the traditional paradigm. These results suggested that semantic processing of verbs can influence the brain activity of motor imagery and enhance the mu event-related desynchronisation. The combination of semantic processing with motor imagery is therefore a promising method for the improvement of operators' BCI performances.

Neurophysiology of Grasping Actions: Evidence from ERPs

We use our hands very frequently to interact with our environment. Neuropsychology together with lesion models and intracranial recordings and imaging work yielded important insights into the functional neuroanatomical correlates of grasping, one important function of our hands, pointing toward a functional parietofrontal brain network. Event-related potentials (ERPs) register directly electrical brain activity and are endowed with high temporal resolution but have long been assumed to be susceptible to movement artifacts. Recent work has shown that reliable ERPs can be obtained during movement execution. Here, we review the available ERP work on (uni) manual grasping actions. We discuss various ERP components and how they may be related to functional components of grasping according to traditional distinctions of manual actions such as planning and control phases. The ERP results are largely in line with the assumption of a parietofrontal network. But other questions remain, in particular regarding the temporal succession of frontal and parietal ERP effects. With the low number of ERP studies on grasping, not all ERP effects appear to be coherent with one another. Understanding the control of our hands may help to develop further neurocognitive theories of grasping and to make progress in prosthetics, rehabilitation or development of technical systems for support of human actions.

Proxy study on minimizing risk of sacral pressure ulcers while complying with ventilator-associated pneumonia risk reduction guidelines

Bed positioning poses a subtle, yet important, tradeoff in the competing needs of hospitalized patients, particularly those susceptible to lower respiratory tract infections and/or pressure ulcers. Although it is widely held that a minimum 30° incline is necessary to mitigate risk of ventilator-acquired pneumonia, it is unclear what effect semirecumbent positioning has on the risk of pressure ulcerations. The authors test several hypotheses with the objective of elucidating the relationship between bed incline, posture, and incline, pursuant to a more evidence-based recommendation for practice in clinical care. To this end, interfacial pressures from 40 healthy subjects were analyzed following observation in both supine and sidelying positions, at shallow (30°) and moderate (45°) bed-angle incline. Summarily, the authors report that supine postures reduce pressure signatures associated with pressure ulceration versus sidelying position: 15% increase area of contact (P = 1.3×10), and 17% decrease in ratio of peak to average pressure (P = 3.1×10). Within supine posture, the authors found significant increases in 4 measures of local pressure, including average pressure (10.4% decrease, P = .005) and coefficient of pressure variation (22.1%, P = 2.2×10) at moderate incline. The authors conclude that supine bed positionings at moderate incline appear to reduce predictors of pressure ulceration.
