A molecular-based theory for the thermodynamic properties of water

Water and aqueous solutions: simple non-speculative model approach

Different ways of molecular modeling of water are analyzed and their similarities and differences identified. An up-to-date summary of achievements of a general approach to common rigid site-site interaction models of molecular fluids applied to water and aqueous solutions is then presented and discussed. The method is based on considering only a short-range part of a total realistic potential (such as SPC/E or TIPxP) which determines the structure of water (and fluids in general). A simplification of the interactions at short intermolecular separations leads then to simple models, called primitive models. Quite accurate results in an analytic form for the thermodynamic properties of the models are obtained using the thermodynamic perturbation theory. It is shown that the properly constructed primitive models reproduce, qualitatively, anomalies of pure water and basic characteristics of hydrophobic hydration. The concept of an extended excluded volume, based on pseudo-hard bodies, is introduced and exemplified by considering the partial molar volume of apolar solutes. Potential future development towards a theory of water based on the primitive models as a reference with the long-range contributions added as a perturbation is discussed.

Role of nonadditive forces on the structure and properties of liquid water

The role of nonadditive interactions on the structure and dielectric properties of water is investigated at different temperatures using molecular dynamics. A new intermolecular potential is developed which contains an ab initio description of two-body additive interactions plus nonadditive contributions from both three-body interactions and polarization. Polarization is the main nonadditive influence, resulting in improved agreement with experiment for the radial distribution function, dielectric constant, and dipole moment. A comparison is also made with other widely used intermolecular potentials. The new potential provides a superior prediction of the dielectric constant and dipole moment. It also predicts the relative contribution of hydrogen bonding better than the SPC/E potential [Berendsen et al., J. Phys. Chem. 91, 6269 (1987)].

Phase behavior of dipolar associating fluids from the SAFT-VR+D equation of state

The statistical associating fluid theory for potentials of variable range plus dipole (SAFT-VR+D) is extended to study associating dipolar fluids. In the SAFT-VR+D approach dipolar interactions are taken into account through the use of the generalized mean spherical approximation to describe a reference fluid of dipolar square-well segments. This enables the effect of the dipolar interactions on the thermodynamics and structure of fluids to be explicitly described. Predictions for the thermodynamic properties and phase behavior of dipolar associating square-well monomers with one, two, and four association sites are considered and compared with new isothermal-isobaric and Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo simulation data. The results show that the SAFT-VR+D equation provides a good description of the phase behavior of dipolar associating fluids. Additionally we have applied the new theoretical approach to study the vapor pressure and saturated liquid density of water.

Perturbed Chain-Statistical Associating Fluid Theory Extended to Dipolar and Quadrupolar Molecular Fluids

The perturbed chain statistical associating fluid theory (PC-SAFT) is extended to polar molecular fluids, namely dipolar and quadrupolar fluids. The extension is based on the perturbation theory for polar fluids by Stell and co-workers. Appropriate expressions are proposed for dipole-dipole, quadrupole-quadrupole, and dipole-quadrupole interactions. Furthermore, induced dipole interactions are calculated explicitly in the model. The new polar PC-SAFT model is relatively complex; for this purpose, a truncated polar PC-SAFT model is proposed using only the leading term in the polynomial expansion for polar interactions. The new model is used for the calculation of thermodynamic properties of various quadrupolar pure fluids. In all cases, the agreement between experimental data and model predictions is very good.
