Anab initiomolecular orbital study comparing the bonding of the NH3and the H2O in the monoammines and the monohydrates of main group and transition metal ions

Polytellurides of Mn, Fe, and Zn from mild solvothermal reactions in liquid ammonia

The reaction of elemental Mn, Fe, and Zn with Te in liquid ammonia at 50 °C leads to the polytellurides [Mn(NH3)6]Te4 (1), [Fe(NH3)6]Te4·NH3 (2), and [Zn(NH3)4]2Te15 (3) in quantitative yield for 1 and 3, and in 30-50% yield for 2. The compounds form black crystals, which are air sensitive and easily lose ammonia without a protective atmosphere of NH3. Compound 3 is semiconducting with a thermal activation energy of 1.2 eV. In the crystal structures of 1 and 2, tetratelluride anions Te4(2-) in gauche conformation with dihedral angles around 90° are present, which are linked to form infinite spiral chains. Compound 3 contains an unusual Te15(4-) polyanion in the form of a bent chain Te7-Te-Te7. The connection between the Te4 groups in 1 and 2 and the two Te7 groups in 3 is achieved via linear Te3 entities, which are strongly asymmetric in 1, almost symmetric in 2, and symmetric in 3 (for 1, Te-Te···Te 174.0°, d1 = 2.87, d2 = 3.25 Å; for 2, Te-Te-Te 178.8°, d1 = 3.01, d2 = 3.09 Å; for 3, Te-Te-Te 180°, d1 = d2 = 3.06 Å). Periodic DFT calculations show that interaction between the Te4(2-) units is negligible in 1 and weak but undoubtedly present in 2. The overlap population amounts to 0.09 in the linear Te3 group of 3. The band structure calculation of 3 gives semiconducting behavior with a band gap of 1.5 eV in fair agreement with experimental data.

Infrared spectroscopy of Cr+(H2O) and Cr2+(H2O): the role of charge in cation hydration

Singly and doubly charged chromium-water ion-molecule complexes are produced by laser vaporization in a pulsed-nozzle cluster source. These species are detected and mass-selected in a specially designed time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Vibrational spectroscopy is measured for these complexes in the O-H stretching region using infrared photodissociation spectroscopy and the method of rare gas atom predissociation. Infrared excitation is not able to break the ion-water bonds in these systems, but it leads to elimination of argon, providing an efficient mechanism for detecting the spectrum. The O-H stretches for both singly and doubly charged complexes are shifted to frequencies lower than those for the free water molecule, and the intensity of the symmetric stretch band is strongly enhanced relative to the asymmetric stretch. Partially resolved rotational structure for both complexes shows that the H-O-H bond angle is greater than it is in the free water molecule. These polarization-induced effects are enhanced in the doubly charged ion relative to its singly charged analog.

Ab initio study of surface acid-base reactions. The case of molecular and dissociative adsorption of ammonia on the (011) surface of rutile TiO2

The interaction of ammonia molecules with Lewis acid centers (Ti4+ metal ions) of the (011) surface of rutile TiO2 is investigated by density functional theory in order to understand, from first principle, the nature of acid-base reactions on solid surfaces. Unlike the rutile (110) surface that contains alternating rows of 5-fold and 6-fold Ti atoms, all Ti atoms of the (011) surface are 5-fold coordinated. This surface has shown considerable activity for numerous chemical reactions and is thus an ideal prototype. At 1/2 monolayer coverage, with respect to surface Ti atoms, the adsorption energy is found to be equal to 100 kJ mol-1, and drops to 58 kJ mol-1 at one monolayer coverage. Analysis of the electronic density of states (DOS) revealed information regarding the mode of adsorption. In particular, the nitrogen 3a1 and 2a1 orbitals appear to undergo significant changes upon adsorption, in agreement with photoelectron spectroscopy studies. Dissociative adsorption was also investigated on the same surface. Both NH2(Tis) + H(Os) and NH(Tis) + 2H(Os) modes of dissociative adsorption, where s stands for surface, are found to be less stable than the molecular (non dissociated) adsorption.

Calculated spectroscopic and electric properties of the alkali metal-ammonia complexes from Kn–NH3 to Frn–NH3 (n=0,+1)

The newly developed Stuttgart small-core scalar relativistic pseudopotentials for the alkali metals are used to study spectroscopic and electric properties of the heavier alkali metal-ammonia complexes from K(n)-NH(3) to Fr(n)-NH(3) (n=0,+1) at the second-order Moller-Plesset (MP2) and coupled cluster [CCSD(T)] levels of theory. Equilibrium geometries and dissociation energies computed at the MP2 level are in reasonable agreement with their CCSD(T) counterparts, whereas for the dipole polarizabilities MP2 is not performing well overestimating significantly electron correlation effects. The bond distances increase monotonically with increasing mass of the metal atom as relativistic effects are small in these systems. However, the dipole polarizabilities are more sensitive to such effects and we find a decrease in this property from Cs-NH(3) to Fr-NH(3). Combination of CCSD(T) harmonic frequencies and MP2 anharmonic corrections obtained from a perturbative vibrational treatment leads to fundamental frequencies in good agreement with experimental results obtained by Suzer and Andrews [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 109, 300 (1986)]. We also present the results of variational calculations with a three-dimensional vibrational Hamiltonian, making use of CCSD(T) potential energy and electric dipole moment surfaces. Complexation of NH(3) to the metal causes a strong infrared intensification of the symmetric NH(3) stretching mode in the neutral complexes, which is absent in the charged species.

Fragmentation Pathways of [Mg(NH3)n]2+ Complexes: Electron Capture versus Charge Separation

New experimental results are presented from a detailed study of gas-phase [Mg(NH(3))(n)](2+) complexes and their fragmentation pathways. The reactions examined range from those observed as metastable (unimolecular) decompositions through to collision-induced processes, which have been accessed using a variety of collision gases. Measurements of ion intensity distributions coupled with unimolecular decay studies show that [Mg(NH(3))(4)](2+) not only is the most intense species detected but also sits at a critical boundary between complexes that are unstable with respect to charge separation and those that are sufficiently solvated to be deemed stable on the time scale of the experiment. Metastable fragmentation patterns have been used to provide information on the evolution of solvent structure around the central dication. In addition to highlighting the particular significance of [Mg(NH(3))(4)](2+), these measurements show some evidence to suggest the buildup of structures via a hydrogen-bonded network to give conformers of the form (4+1) and (4+2), respectively. Collision-induced dissociation studies show the ions to exhibit several fragmentation pathways, including the loss of NH(3) and NH(3) + H, which are promoted primarily through electron capture dissociation (ECD). This picture contrasts with the conclusion from a number of earlier studies that collisional activation mainly promotes charge separation. From the results presented it is suggested that electron capture may play a more dominant role in the charge reduction of multiply charged metal-ligand species than had previously been appreciated.

Novel modulation of drug delivery using binary zinc-alginate-pectinate polyspheres for zero-order kinetics over several days: experimental design strategy to elucidate the crosslinking mechanism

A Box-Behnken design was applied to mathematically establish whether different degrees of crosslinking were induced by Zn2+ and Ca2+ ions in polyspheres composed of alginate and/or pectin, and the model drug ibuprofen. Based on their different crystal structures and coordination numbers, a theoretical model was proposed demonstrating that Zn2+ ions preferentially crosslink alginate and pectin. In addition, the lower coordination number of Zn2+ (4-6) would significantly retard hydration of both polymers, as opposed to Ca2+ (7-9). The responses studied for 28 statistically derived polyspheres included drug encapsulation efficiency, physicomechanical behavior, and in vitro drug release potential. Single-tailed Student's t-tests on data generated for the encapsulation efficiencies, primary facture values, and rupture energies indicated that Zn2+ was statistically superior (p<0.05) in crosslinking alginate and pectin. Further textural analysis revealed a good correlation between the Brinell hardness number and fracture load, while an inverse relationship was found for matrix tensile strength. Viscosity studies demonstrated different in situ crosslinking thresholds for Zn2+. The Durbin-Watson statistic and correlation coefficient revealed that the quadratic regression function was highly accurate in predicting the responses. Using a generalized reduced gradient algorithm on dissolution values obtained after 2 hours (t2h) provided optimized solutions for achieving zero-order release extending from 2 hours to 7 days. Mathematical simulations projected drug release from 25 to 50 days.
