A theoretical and experimental study of non-linear absorption properties of substituted 2,5-di-(phenylethynyl)thiophenes and structurally related compounds

Computational methodology study of the optical and thermochemical properties of a molecular photoswitch

We assess how the utilization of different DFT functionals for obtaining the equilibrium geometries and vibrational frequencies affect the description of the thermochemistry and subsequent calculation of the optical properties of a dihydroazulene-vinylheptafulvene photoswitch. The assessment covers nine popular DFT functionals (BLYP, B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP, M06-L, M06, M06-2X, PBE, PBE0, and ωB97X-D) in conjugation with five different Pople style basis sets (6-31+G(d), 6-31++G(d,p), 6-311+G(d), 6-311++G(d,p), and 6-311++G(3df,3pd)). It is identified that only CAM-B3LYP, M06-2X, and PBE0 are able to quantitatively describe the correct trends in the thermochemical properties. The subsequent calculation of the optical properties using the CAM-B3LYP functional shows that there is little difference in whether the CAM-B3LYP, M06-2X, or PBE0 functionals have been used to calculate the equilibrium geometries. Utilizing the identified functionals, we investigate how the number of electron withdrawing cyano substituents influence the thermochemistry and optical properties of the molecular photoswitch.

Interaction of gas phase oxalic acid with ammonia and its atmospheric implications

The temperature effects could contribute to the variation of the relative populations of the isomers, thus the temperature dependence of the thermodynamic properties is an important parameter to understand the roles of the specific nucleation mechanisms at various atmospheric temperatures.

Computational study of the Rayleigh light scattering properties of atmospheric pre-nucleation clusters

The Rayleigh and hyper Rayleigh scattering properties of the binary (H2SO4)(H2O)n and ternary (H2SO4)(NH3)(H2O)n clusters are investigated using a quantum mechanical response theory approach. The molecular Rayleigh scattering intensities are expressed using the dipole polarizability α and hyperpolarizability β tensors. Using density functional theory, we elucidate the effect of cluster morphology on the scattering properties using a combinatorial sampling approach. We find that the Rayleigh scattering intensity depends quadratically on the number of water molecules in the cluster and that a single ammonia molecule is able to induce a high anisotropy, which further increases the scattering intensity. The hyper Rayleigh scattering activities are found to be extremely low. This study presents the first attempt to map the scattering of atmospheric molecular clusters using a bottom-up approach.

Synthesis and antidepressant-like activity of selenophenes obtained via iron(III)-PhSeSePh-mediated cyclization of Z-selenoenynes

We present here the synthesis and antidepressant-like action of a series of 2,5-disubstituted-3-(organoseleno)-selenophenes prepared by a novel synthetic route, the FeCl(3)-diorganyl dichalcogenide-mediated intramolecular cyclization of (Z)-chalcogenoenynes. The cyclized products were obtained in good yields. The results showed that 2c, 2d, 2e and 2o, evaluated in the mouse forced-swimming test, elicited an antidepressant-like activity. The studies clearly show that the phenyl group at the 2-position and an organoselenium group at the 3-position of the selenophene ring are essential for the antidepressant-like activity of selenophenes. A close inspection of the results also revealed that the fluorophenyl portion in the organoselenium group is fundamental for the antidepressant-like action of this class of organochalcogens.
