Crossed-beam universal-detection reactive scattering of radical beams characterized by laser-induced-fluorescence: the case of C2and CN

A combined crossed molecular beam and theorerical study of the O(3P,1D) + acrylonitrile (CH2CHCN) reactions and implications for combustion and extraterrestrial environments

Acrylonitrile (CH₂CHCN) is ubiquitous in space (molecular clouds, solar-type star forming regions, and circumstellar envelopes) and is also abundant in the upper atmosphere of Titan. The reaction O(³P) + CH₂CHCN can be of relevance in the chemistry of the interstellar medium because of the abundance of atomic oxygen. The oxidation of acrylonitrile is also important in combustion as the thermal decomposition of pyrrolic and pyridinic structures present in fuel-bound nitrogen generates many nitrogen-bearing compounds, including acrylonitrile. Despite its relevance, limited information exists on this reaction. We report a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the reactions of acrylonitrile with both ground ³P and excited ¹D atomic oxygen. From product angular and time-of-flight distributions in crossed molecular beam experiments with mass spectrometric detection at a collision energy, E_c, of 31.4 kJ mol^-1, we have identified the primary reaction products and determined their branching fractions (BFs). Theoretical calculations of the relevant triplet and singlet potential energy surfaces (PESs) were performed to interpret the experimental results and elucidate the reaction mechanism. Adiabatic statistical calculations of product BFs for the decomposition of the main triplet and singlet intermediates have been carried out. Combining the experimental and theoretical results, we conclude that the O(³P) reaction leads to two main product channels: (i) CH₂CNH (ketenimine) + CO (dominant with a BF of 0.87 ± 0.05), formed via efficient intersystem crossing from the entrance triplet PES to the underlying singlet PES, and (ii) HCOCHCN + H (minor, with a BF of 0.13 ± 0.05), occurring adiabatically on the triplet PES. Our study suggests the inclusion of this reaction as a possible destruction pathway of CH₂CHCN and a possible formation route of CH₂CNH in the interstellar medium. The O(¹D) + CH₂CHCN reaction mainly leads to the formation of CH₂CNH + CO adiabatically on the singlet PES. This result can improve models related to the chemistry of interstellar ice and cometary comas, where O(¹D) reactions can play a role. Overall, our results are expected to be useful for improving the models of combustion and extraterrestrial environments.

Reactions O(3P, 1D) + HCCCN(X1Σ+) (Cyanoacetylene): Crossed-Beam and Theoretical Studies and Implications for the Chemistry of Extraterrestrial Environments

Cyanoacetylene (HCCCN), the first member of the cyanopolyyne family (HC_nN, where n = 3, 5, 7, ...), is of particular interest in astrochemistry being ubiquitous in space (molecular clouds, solar-type protostars, protoplanetary disks, circumstellar envelopes, and external galaxies) and also relatively abundant. It is also abundant in the upper atmosphere of Titan and comets. Since oxygen is the third most abundant element in space, after hydrogen and helium, the reaction O + HCCCN can be of relevance in the chemistry of extraterrestrial environments. Despite that, scarce information exists not only on the reactions of oxygen atoms with cyanoacetylene but with nitriles in general. Here, we report on a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the reactions of cyanoacetylene with both ground ³P and excited ¹D atomic oxygen and provide detailed information on the primary reaction products, their branching fractions (BFs), and the overall reaction mechanisms. More specifically, the reactions of O(³P, ¹D) with HCCCN(X¹Σ⁺) have been investigated under single-collision conditions by the crossed molecular beams scattering method with mass spectrometric detection and time-of-flight analysis at the collision energy, E_c, of 31.1 kJ/mol. From product angular and time-of-flight distributions, we have identified the primary reaction products and determined their branching fractions (BFs). Theoretical calculations of the relevant triplet and singlet potential energy surfaces (PESs) were performed to assist the interpretation of the experimental results and clarify the reaction mechanism. Adiabatic statistical calculations of product BFs for the decomposition of the main triplet and singlet intermediates have also been carried out. Merging together the experimental and theoretical results, we conclude that the O(³P) reaction is characterized by a minor adiabatic channel leading to OCCCN (cyanoketyl) + H (experimental BF = 0.10 ± 0.05), while the dominant channel (BF = 0.90 ± 0.05) occurs via intersystem crossing to the underlying singlet PES and leads to formation of ¹HCCN (cyanomethylene) + CO. The O(¹D) reaction is characterized by the same two channels, with the relative CO/H yield being slightly larger. Considering the recorded reactive signal and the calculated entrance barrier, we estimate that the rate coefficient for reaction O(³P) + HC₃N at 300 K is in the 10^-12 cm³ molec^-1 s^-1 range. Our results are expected to be useful to improve astrochemical and photochemical models. In addition, they are also relevant in combustion chemistry, because the thermal decomposition of pyrrolic and pyridinic structures present in fuel-bound nitrogen generates many nitrogen-bearing compounds, including cyanoacetylene.

Multichannel Radical-Radical Reaction Dynamics of NO + Propargyl Probed by Broadband Rotational Spectroscopy

Chirped-pulse rotational spectroscopy in a quasi-uniform flow has been used to investigate the reaction dynamics of a multichannel radical-radical reaction of relevance to planetary atmospheres and combustion. In this work, the NO + propargyl (C₃H₃) reaction was found to yield six product channels containing eight detected species. These products and their branching fractions (%), are as follows: HCN (50), HCNO (18), CH₂CN (12), CH₃CN (7.4), HC₃N (6.2), HNC (2.3), CH₂CO (1.3), HCO (1.8). The results are discussed in light of previous unimolecular photodissociation studies of isoxazole and prior potential energy surface calculations of the NO + C₃H₃ system. The results also show that the product branching is strongly influenced by the excess energy of the reactant radicals. The implications of the title reaction to the planetary atmospheres, particularly to Titan, are discussed.

Unsaturated Dinitriles Formation Routes in Extraterrestrial Environments: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Investigation of the Reaction between Cyano Radicals and Cyanoethene (C2H3CN)

The reaction between cyano radicals (CN, X²Σ⁺) and cyanoethene (C₂H₃CN) has been investigated by a combined approach coupling crossed molecular beam (CMB) experiments with mass spectrometric detection and time-of-flight analysis at a collision energy of 44.6 kJ mol^–1 and electronic structure calculations to determine the relevant potential energy surface. The experimental results can be interpreted by assuming the occurrence of a dominant reaction pathway leading to the two but-2-enedinitrile (1,2-dicyanothene) isomers (E- and Z-NC–CH=CH–CN) in a H-displacement channel and, to a much minor extent, to 1,1-dicyanoethene, CH₂C(CN)₂. In order to derive the product branching ratios under the conditions of the CMB experiments and at colder temperatures, including those relevant to Titan and to cold interstellar clouds, we have carried out RRKM statistical calculations using the relevant potential energy surface of the investigated reaction. We have also estimated the rate coefficient at very low temperatures by employing a semiempirical method for the treatment of long-range interactions. The reaction has been found to be barrierless and fast also under the low temperature conditions of cold interstellar clouds and the atmosphere of Titan. Astrophysical implications and comparison with literature data are also presented. On the basis of the present work, 1,2-dicyanothene and 1,1-dicyanothene are excellent candidates for the search of dinitriles in the interstellar medium.

A combined crossed molecular beams and computational study on the formation of distinct resonantly stabilized C5H3 radicals via chemically activated C5H4 and C6H6 intermediates

The crossed molecular beams technique was utilized to explore the formation of three isomers of resonantly stabilized (C5H3) radicals along with their d2-substituted counterparts via the bimolecular reactions of singlet/triplet dicarbon [C2(X1Σ+g/a3Πu)] with methylacetylene [CH3CCH(X1A1)], d3-methylacetylene [CD3CCH(X1A1)], and 1-butyne [C2H5CCH(X1A')] at collision energies up to 26 kJ mol-1via chemically activated singlet/triplet C5H4/C5D3H and C6H6 intermediates. These studies exploit a newly developed supersonic dicarbon [C2(X1Σ+g/a3Πu)] beam generated via photolysis of tetrachloroethylene [C2Cl4(X1Ag)] by excluding interference from carbon atoms, which represent the dominating (interfering) species in ablation-based dicarbon sources. We evaluated the performance of the dicarbon [C2(X1Σ+g/a3Πu)] beam in reactions with methylacetylene [CH3CCH(X1A1)] and d3-methylacetylene [CD3CCH(X1A1)]; the investigations demonstrate that the reaction dynamics match previous studies in our laboratory utilizing ablation-based dicarbon sources involving the synthesis of 1,4-pentadiynyl-3 [HCCCHCCH(X2B1)] and 2,4-pentadiynyl-1 [H2CCCCCH(X2B1)] radicals via hydrogen (deuterium) atom elimination. Considering the C2(X1Σ+g/a3Πu)-1-butyne [C2H5CCH(X1A')] reaction, the hitherto elusive methyl-loss pathway was detected. This channel forms the previously unknown resonantly stabilized penta-1-yn-3,4-dienyl-1 [H2CCCHCC(X2A)] radical along with the methyl radical [CH3(X2A2'')] and is open exclusively on the triplet surface with an overall reaction energy of -86 ± 10 kJ mol-1. The preferred reaction pathways proceed first by barrierless addition of triplet dicarbon to the π-electronic system of 1-butyne, either to both acetylenic carbon atoms or to the sterically more accessible carbon atom, to form the methyl-bearing triplet C6H6 intermediates [i41b] and [i81b], respectively, with the latter decomposing via a tight exit transition state to penta-1-yn-3,4-dienyl-1 [(H2CCCHCC(X2A)] plus the methyl radical [CH3(X2A2'')]. The successful unraveling of this methyl-loss channel - through collaborative experimental and computational efforts - underscores the viability of the photolytically generated dicarbon beam as an unprecedented tool to access reaction dynamics underlying the formation of resonantly stabilized free radicals (RSFR) that are vital to molecular mass growth processes that ultimately lead to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

Crossed beam polyatomic reaction dynamics: recent advances and new insights

This review summarizes the developments in polyatomic reaction dynamics, focusing on reactions of unsaturated hydrocarbons with O-atoms and methane with atoms/radicals.

A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study on the Formation of the 2-Methyl-1-silacycloprop-2-enylidene Molecule via the Crossed Beam Reactions of the Silylidyne Radical (SiH; X(2)Π) with Methylacetylene (CH3CCH; X(1)A1) and D4-Methylacetylene (CD3CCD; X(1)A1)

The bimolecular gas-phase reactions of the ground-state silylidyne radical (SiH; X(2)Π) with methylacetylene (CH3CCH; X(1)A1) and D4-methylacetylene (CD3CCD; X(1)A1) were explored at collision energies of 30 kJ mol(-1) under single-collision conditions exploiting the crossed molecular beam technique and complemented by electronic structure calculations. These studies reveal that the reactions follow indirect scattering dynamics, have no entrance barriers, and are initiated by the addition of the silylidyne radical to the carbon-carbon triple bond of the methylacetylene molecule either to one carbon atom (C1; [i1]/[i2]) or to both carbon atoms concurrently (C1-C2; [i3]). The collision complexes [i1]/[i2] eventually isomerize via ring-closure to the c-SiC3H5 doublet radical intermediate [i3], which is identified as the decomposing reaction intermediate. The hydrogen atom is emitted almost perpendicularly to the rotational plane of the fragmenting complex resulting in a sideways scattering dynamics with the reaction being overall exoergic by -12 ± 11 kJ mol(-1) (experimental) and -1 ± 3 kJ mol(-1) (computational) to form the cyclic 2-methyl-1-silacycloprop-2-enylidene molecule (c-SiC3H4; p1). In line with computational data, experiments of silylidyne with D4-methylacetylene (CD3CCD; X(1)A1) depict that the hydrogen is emitted solely from the silylidyne moiety but not from methylacetylene. The dynamics are compared to those of the related D1-silylidyne (SiD; X(2)Π)-acetylene (HCCH; X(1)Σg(+)) reaction studied previously in our group, and from there, we discovered that the methyl group acts primarily as a spectator in the title reaction. The formation of 2-methyl-1-silacycloprop-2-enylidene under single-collision conditions via a bimolecular gas-phase reaction augments our knowledge of the hitherto poorly understood silylidyne (SiH; X(2)Π) radical reactions with small hydrocarbon molecules leading to the synthesis of organosilicon molecules in cold molecular clouds and in carbon-rich circumstellar envelopes.

The role of isovalency in the reactions of the cyano (CN), boron monoxide (BO), silicon nitride (SiN), and ethynyl (C2H) radicals with unsaturated hydrocarbons acetylene (C2H2) and ethylene (C2H4)

The classification of chemical reactions based on shared characteristics is at the heart of the chemical sciences, and is well exemplified by Langmuir's concept of isovalency, in which ‘two molecular entities with the same number of valence electrons have similar chemistries’.

Combined crossed beam and theoretical studies of the N(2D) + C2H4 reaction and implications for atmospheric models of Titan

The dynamics of the H displacement channels in the reaction N((2)D) + C(2)H(4) have been investigated by the crossed molecular beam technique with mass spectrometric detection and time-of-flight analysis at two different collision energies (17.2 and 28.2 kJ/mol). The interpretation of the scattering results is assisted by new electronic structure calculations of stationary points and product energetics for the C(2)H(4)N ground state doublet potential energy surface. RRKM statistical calculations have been performed to derive the product branching ratio under the conditions of the present experiments and of the atmosphere of Titan. Similarities and differences with respect to a recent study performed in crossed beam experiments coupled to ionization via tunable VUV synchrotron radiation are discussed (Lee, S.-H.; et al. Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys.2011, 13, 8515-8525). Implications for the atmospheric chemistry of Titan are presented.

An LIF characterization of supersonic BO (X2Σ+) and CN (X2Σ+) radical sources for crossed beam studies

Various ablation sources generating supersonic boron monoxide (BO; X(2)Σ(+)) radical beams utilizing oxygen (O(2)), carbon dioxide (CO(2)), methanol (CH(3)OH), and water (H(2)O) as seeding gases were characterized in a crossed molecular beams setup by mass resolved time-of-flight spectroscopy and spectroscopically via laser induced fluorescence. Intensities of the sources as well as rovibrational energy distributions were analyzed. The molecular oxygen source was found to produce excessive amount of an unwanted BO(2) byproduct. Internal vibrational energy of boron monoxide generated in the water and methanol sources was too high to be considered for the study of dynamics of ground state radicals. The best combination of intensity, purity, and low internal energy was found in the carbon dioxide source to generate boron monoxide. We successfully tested the boron monoxide (BO; X(2)Σ(+)) radical beam source in crossed beams reactions with acetylene (C(2)H(2)) and ethylene (C(2)H(4)). The source was also compared with supersonic beams of the isoelectronic cyano (CN; X(2)Σ(+)) radical.

Formation of nitriles and imines in the atmosphere of Titan: combined crossed-beam and theoretical studies on the reaction dynamics of excited nitrogen atoms N(2D) with ethane

The dynamics of the H-displacement channels in the reaction N(2D) + C2H6 have been investigated by the crossed molecular beam technique with mass spectrometric detection and time-of-flight analysis at two different collision energies (18.0 and 31.4 kJ mol(-1)). From the derived center-of-mass product angular and translational energy distributions the reaction micromechanisms and the product energy partitioning have been obtained. The interpretation of the scattering results is assisted by new ab initio electronic structure calculations of stationary points and product energetics for the C2H6N ground state doublet potential energy surface. C-C bond breaking and NH production channels have been theoretically characterized and the statistical branching ratio derived at the temperatures relevant for the atmosphere of Titan. Methanimine plus CH3 and ethanimine plus H are the main reaction channels. Implications for the atmospheric chemistry of Titan are discussed.
