Assessment of the second-order perturbative corrections to PNOF5

Coupled cluster-inspired geminal wavefunctions

Electron pairs have an illustrious history in chemistry, from powerful concepts to understanding structural stability and reactive changes to the promise of serving as building blocks of quantitative descriptions of the electronic structure of complex molecules and materials. However, traditionally, two-electron wavefunctions (geminals) have not enjoyed the popularity and widespread use of the more standard single-particle methods. This has changed recently, with a renewed interest in the development of geminal wavefunctions as an alternative to describing strongly correlated phenomena. Hence, there is a need to find geminal methods that are accurate, computationally tractable, and do not demand significant input from the user (particularly via cumbersome and often ill-behaved orbital optimization steps). Here, we propose new families of geminal wavefunctions inspired by the pair coupled cluster doubles ansatz. We present a new hierarchy of two-electron wavefunctions that extends the one-reference orbital idea to other geminals. Moreover, we show how to incorporate single-like excitations in this framework without leaving the quasiparticle picture. We explore the role of imposing seniority restrictions on these wavefunctions and benchmark these new methods on model strongly correlated systems.

Electron Correlation in the Iron(II) Porphyrin by Natural Orbital Functional Approximations

The relative stability of the singlet, triplet, and quintet spin states of iron(II) porphyrin (FeP) represents a challenging problem for electronic structure methods. While it is currently accepted that the ground state is a triplet, multiconfigurational wave function-based methods predict a quintet, and density functional approximations vary between triplet and quintet states, leading to a prediction that highly depends on the features of the method employed. The recently proposed Global Natural Orbital Functional (GNOF) aims to provide a balanced treatment between static and dynamic correlation, and together with the previous Piris Natural Orbital Functionals (PNOFs), allowed us to explore the importance of each type of correlation in the stability order of the states of FeP with a method that conserves the spin of the system. It is noteworthy that GNOF correlates all electrons in all available orbitals for a given basis set; in the case of the FeP with a double-ζ basis set as used in this work, this means that GNOF can properly correlate 186 electrons in 465 orbitals, significantly increasing the sizes of systems amenable to multiconfigurational treatment. Results show that PNOF5, PNOF7s, and PNOF7 predict the quintet to have a lower energy than the triplet state; however, the addition of dynamic correlation via second-order Møller-Plesset corrections (NOF-MP2) turns the triplet state to be lower than the quintet state, a prediction also reproduced by GNOF that incorporates much more dynamic correlation than its predecessors.

The Bond Order of C2 from a Strictly N-Representable Natural Orbital Energy Functional Perspective

The bond order of the ground electronic state of the carbon dimer has been analyzed in the light of natural orbital functional theory calculations carried out with an approximate, albeit strictly N-representable, energy functional. Three distinct solutions have been found from the Euler equations of the minimization of the energy functional with respect to the natural orbitals and their occupation numbers, which expand upon increasing values of the internuclear coordinate. In the close vicinity of the minimum energy region, two of the solutions compete around a discontinuity point. The former, corresponding to the absolute minimum energy, features two valence natural orbitals of each of the following symmetries, σ, σ*, π and π*, and has three bonding interactions and one antibonding interaction, which is very suggestive of a bond order large than two but smaller than three. The latter, features one σ-σ* linked pair of natural orbitals and three degenerate pseudo-bonding like orbitals, paired each with one triply degenerate pseudo-antibonding orbital, which points to a bond order larger than three. When correlation effects, other than Hartree-Fock for example, between the paired natural orbitals are accounted for, this second solution vanishes yielding a smooth continuous dissociation curve. Comparison of the vibrational energies and electron ionization energies, calculated on this curve, with their corresponding experimental marks, lend further support to a bond order for C2 intermediate between acetylene and ethylene.
